View Full Version : highlighting hawk turquoise? Boomer July 23rd, 2008, 09:48 Hi,
I need some painting tips (there’s a first time for everything I guess)
I would like to know the best way to highlight hawk turquoise.
I was thinking of using the new blue or maybe even the black wash.
Any other ideas? Thedeadmonky July 23rd, 2008, 10:33 well u can get a highlight by adding a little bit of white or bleached bone to a little bit of turquoise... Boomer July 23rd, 2008, 10:56 Thanks, i will try that. :handshake: Dwayne July 23rd, 2008, 12:56 Maybe not BleachedBone because it is far to 'yellow-ish dirty-ness colour' but white sounds good. Have you got any Vallejo pale greyblue? it is a sought of off-white colour with a hint of blue (not as strong as skull white) maybe it's worth a go:act-up:.
-Dwayne xbanditsx July 23rd, 2008, 15:08 I actually really like adding Bleached Bone to colors to lighten them up. I also know that a lot of people like doing the same thing with Commando Khaki. I usually avoid straight white after I ended up turning my red into pink. King Ulrik Flamebeard July 23rd, 2008, 18:05 Washes are generally for shading, rather than highlighting. But as said, colours like white, bleached bone or kommando khaki (the latter being a personal favourite) will give you a highlight colour to use. The latter two will give you a more muted tone, white can be quite harsh so you will not need much.
Kuffy slorak July 23rd, 2008, 22:55 A very light gray would work as well. Something like a ghost or wolf gray...
Cheers,

I got one more, what would be the best colour base coat?
I have tied it on black and it's not bad. But would it be bright
on a white base coat?
- Boomer. slorak July 24th, 2008, 00:05 White will give you a brighter look. Black tends to dull colors down....
Cheers,
-Mike eiglepulper July 24th, 2008, 00:21 It depends on what model you're planning on using the Hawk Turquoise on. If it's a model like an Eldar Swooping Hawk, then a white undercoat would be good, as these guys tend to be very "in your face" with bright colours. If it's on a Space Marine, then black is better as they are not really renowned for gaudy colours (unless they're Slaaneshi Noise Marines!)
As for highlighting the colour itself, those colours already mentioned will give you different results, so it would be worth your while to check out each one to find which you are happiest with for what you want for your model.
E. DavidVC04 July 24th, 2008, 02:09 If I'm painting a bunch of something, I do black. If it's a single model and especially if I want it to stand out, I use white. I've used grey a little, and it's a nice compromise. Dawnrunner July 24th, 2008, 02:41 White's good and so is black, but what about green? Some sort of (very) light green would be an excellent highlight to make it look more turquoise-ish. DavidVC04 July 24th, 2008, 03:47 White's good and so is black, but what about green? Yeah, I'd do something similar. Mix white into the turquoise and highlight with that. And if you want, really water down the white and then do final highlights. Boomer July 25th, 2008, 01:51 Thanks for all the help guys.
I just have one more question, My main colours for my
troops are going to turquoise, bolt gun metal, but i
need a third colour to break it up. So what would go well with that?
I was thinking scorpian green but it seems to clash a little too much,
any other ideas? DavidVC04 July 25th, 2008, 02:03 Red-orange is the complementary color to blue-green. I'd do that.
Your split comp colors are, go figure, red and orange. You could also use yellow-oranges and red-violets.
Go to a local hobby store, not just gaming, but hobby/craft store. You should be able to find a cheap color wheel. You can find some online too, but I like having one that I can pull out of the drawer when I'm working and look at real quick. | |
