According to the info regarding it back then it was an expantion based on planetary invasions and offering more options in how to bring your reserves.
I would have come with releases for multiple races and plastic scenery was mentioned in the form of airports, bunkers and AA defences, all similair in style to the CoD kits.
It was supposed to have come this summer but its likely it got replaced by 5th and likely to appear next year.

March, the guard codex is already in development will it really take that long that's over half a year! I'm not sure i can wait that long.

It's not the codex that takes so long but the models.
Besides you shouldn't complain other races have been waiting for much longer.

still though 2003-2009 that's a long time to go without a new codex, look at tau, marines for example both had 2 codexes done in less time. (not marines yet but come october) also what other armies haven't had a new codex for longer all i know of is the Dark Eldar.

Lets not get on to that topic AGAIN.

Still back to point planetstrike was rumered a while ago as the next expansion for 40k after CoD and Apoc. Tho it seems that apoc has proved quite popular (i had a few games and it was great fun) and has a few additions in the form of apoc reloaded and new data sheets. I agree with the above and think it will be next summers 'it' thing along with the slew of new buildings and such.
I think it would be such a cool idea if they merge BFG with 40k! Not permintly but just for these games. Say 3000pt game and 1/3 of your army is alowed to be in orbit (BFG) and the defenders get planetery guns (AA guns). They already do campains with some battles fought with BFG and with data sheets im sure they could merge the two. Or heaven forbid they also merge in .... EPIC 40K!!!!!!!! DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN! (might actualy get a game for once ....)

Guard got 2 codexes in 3rd ed. IIRC they were the first army to get a second codex, and chaos got their second one just after them. Tau came out before Guard. It looks like guard will have 3 books before DE, SW, 'crons, DH, and WH get two (though crons, DH, and WH came out after the second guard book IIRC).

Lots of people complain about marines getting 3 books, but CSM got 3 books first, and guard will have gotten 3 books slightly after them.

Back on topic: Planetstrike sounds interesting, but I wonder if it will really matter. I mean, what can it really add to the game? Apoc brought in flyers. There's already droppods and stuff, and I very much doubt GW would make drop style lists for those armies that don't have them as they seem to hate having more than one list per race. At best I can think that there might be new flyer data sheets or something but thats about it. I can't think of anything that it would add that isn't already pretty much there from Apoc and the standard game.

Planetstike could add a comprehensive set of rules to kind of compress entire mini-campaigns into single games. Let me explain:

If you're invading a planet there's going to be a LOT of individual targets to take out, requiring numerous small raids. So Planetstrike games could be arranged to be pit a small defending force against a large attacking force over several small tables (or one sectioned off table). All of the attacker's forces could arrive in one of several new ways, as s/he decides which detachment will strike which defensive zone, subject to alteration by bad dice rolls. The attacker would face daunting defensive bonuses, which would be removed as different defensive zones were taken.

If that were done, we would have:
-New building models, as discussed earlier
-New specific objective models/markers
-Possibly new vehicles/etc. for each race
-An entirely different type of game!
-A giant springboard for long campaigns
-And a HUGE need for new offensive and defensive tactics and army lists!

Just an idea though...

Effectively, the Witch Hunters have had two. The Witch Hunters are just Codex: Sisters of Battle (2nd Edition) and Codex: Assassins (3rd Edition) slapped together with some new Ecclesiastic units and an Inquisitor. The Dark Eldar, Daemonhunters and Necron are the most hard done by armies of all though.

Codex: Assassins is as much DH as WH. I do admit that I tend to think of WH and the old SoB as separate armies, though. Probably because of the different names.

I still don't forsee Planetstrike as bringing anything particularily new. Ok, some special bonuses for defenders and special rules for offence? Reminds me of the old Cityfight book with turrets and stuff. But even still, it doesn't sound new and exiting to me. Maybe that'll change once more rumors come out, but I still don't see what would be so awesome about it and I still can't really see how you can't do those missions you were talking about with normal rules.

The thing that 40k lacks is defender/attacker scenarios with very significant development. Planetstrike appears to be the method for doing that, and you'll get some new models and such, and that's nice.

Tis true. Now you might just have 1000pts vs 1500pts but the 1000pt (defender) list gets 3 bunkers say or an orbital bombardment or just has to last 4 turns or whatever. New rules to actual make little vs large viable is a smart move on GWs part coz new players who only have 500pts can still play large games with cool scenery and neat rules. personaly i hat playing 500pts vs 500pts so *shrugs* who knows.
