Well, I am looking to start out a new army after im done with my Dark Elves. As I am currently low on the green stuff, what army in your opinions are the cheapest to run, while still being competative. Im talking like a balanced force for this army, not anything special.

I found that the Dwarf army box set is a good deal. With 3 characters extra, you have 2000 army done.

And easily converted from gun line to all warriors & longbeards.

Dwarfs and Orcs & Goblins will give you a really good deal with the Battle for Skull Pass set. The O&G Army deals should be available also, and at 100 Sterling, they're a steal. Since you are playing a tactical army I suggest something that will take you in a completely new direction, and the Orcs and Goblins might just do that.

With converting, Ogre's are probably one of the cheaper armies. A Tyrant and the Battalion Box can get you 1,250-1,500 pts. The Bulls are quite easy to convert into Butchers, Ironguts, or Leadbelchers.

Most people don't think Ogre's are very competitive though, so that may be a problem if you agree with them.

I hate to say it.. but probably High Elves :( The fact the army can be so small, yet pretty competitive.
However, for non comp (i.e fun) play, gotta go with Ogres :) You need few models to make a 2K army. And if you really want to make them Comp, just grab Skrag and a butcher or three :)

I think OKs are just as competitive as any army.

What I've found with them is that you will tend to win big or lose big with them.

Wow! They win big too? I'll wait 'til it happens to me.

You could try Chaos Dwarfs. The skull pass set gives you plenty of CDs and Hobgoblins, but you do need a fair amount of greenstuff. You could just paint the Dwarfs to look evil of course.

I don't know how competative the army would be, I'm not into that.

Not extremely, but it would be fun :)

I have to disagree with that. Unless you want to build a force from core units, you're going to buy metal, and you are not going to get a lot of it for your bucks. Even less so with the incoming price increase. It's odd that you find HE the cheapest, I'd say it's quite the contrary (and I'm talking international price range, taken from Maelstrom Games, not local hobby resellers that usually crank up the prices to unbelievable heights).

Cheapest to build? Ogres.

Wood Elves are cheap if you're into converting. You can use Glade Guard, Glade Riders, and Dryads to do some awesome stuff. I've seen fantastic conversions, some simple and others not, from just those kits.
