I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to properly paint gold.

I tend to undercoat Chainmail, and then paint on a couple of thinned down layers of Shining Gold, until I get a solid colour. Then I water down Scorched Brown so it's like a wash, and do a couple of layers of this, so there are some fairly dark shadows on any rivets, or other raised areas. Then paint on some SG again, leaving the Scorched Brown in the recesses, add some Chainmail to the SG, and paint this on, leaving some SG showing. Add more Chainmail, do the same, but leave the first highlight showing. I then just paint plain chainmail on any raised areas, as well as edges. Then apply the Scorched Brown wash one last time, when everything has dried.

That's a rather interesting technique, Citizen.
I may have to try that out some time...

I normally work from Brazen Brass (rather unfortunately, an OOP citadel paint. Vallejo make an alternative, called Brassy Brass), or Dwarf Bronze.
This is then mixed with Shining Gold, and worked up to pure Shining Gold (2-3 layers).
Wash this all with thinned down Scorched Brown, to add some nice depth to the colour, then when this is dry, wash with Devlan Mud, to add some shading.
Finally, repeat the mixes of Shining Gold/Brazen Brass (or Dwarf Bronze), before adding a final top highlight with some mixed in Mithril Silver.

Gold is definately a tricky colour to paint, but with a bit of practice it isn't too hard.

i use alcohol based metallics, on black primer you only need one coat, and i have to use too light of colors for my worldeaters as the dip i dip them in darkens them significantly.

i like the alcohol based metals cause they seem to sit flatter on the model, more like gold foil than paint.

I basecoat scorched brown then I work up mixing in shining gold. Then I highlight with shinig gold mixed with mithril siver, then wash with chestnut ink or delven mud depending on what I want and then highlight once more with shining gold and mithril. I make it a lot less complicated with non characters.

I put a layer of mithril silver, and then the shining gold. Gives a nice bright shiny golden colour (though I err on the yellower side then actual gold as it suits my army theme)

I use a drybrush of bronze on my Worldeaters. I then apply a drybrush of shining gold and finally burnished gold. The effect is very bright but it leaves no doubt that my models have gold on them and not bronze or brass. I also sometimes apply an ink wash of brown right after the shining gold but before the burnished gold. I usually do this only on characters as it adds more depth to them.

i'm quite the beginner, and my technique is much simpler than most everyone's so far...

i base with citadels dwarf bronze kind of thick but mainly just to get a semi solid base leaving a few darker areas showing through, i then highlight using shining gold for the middle tones, then for the extreme highlights i use burnished gold...

i've been using this for my space marines shoulder edgings, it makes them stand out a little which i personally like.
