View Full Version : Best paints to use? Maximus 40k September 30th, 2008, 03:59 Hey all,
I have been playing warhammer 40k/warhammer/LOTR for about 4 years now. I have always used Gamesworkshop paints to paint my models. And they are good paints, but I was wondering if there are better paints out there? Maybe paints that are a little *ahem* cheaper. Or even better quality. Any advice would be appreciated.
I did a forum search to see if this topic had already been addressed, but could not find one. So sorry if this is a duplicate. haha.
Thanks a ton! maguano September 30th, 2008, 04:21 You'll probably find a myriad of answers. Vallejo makes comparable colors to the GW ones, (their "game color") i've heard good things about the P3 line as well, although i haven't used them. As for cheaper, remember you always get what you pay for, but you can find some good deals on line...where do you live?
hope that somewhat helps a bit Hondor September 30th, 2008, 04:50 i personaly like the foundation paints the best of all i've tried, they blend well, are in colors i know and can recognize and all work well together (layer well) thegrayson September 30th, 2008, 10:30 You're going to get a variety of answers to that question. It depends on what you're looking for. I wanted a good range of colours and dropper bottles. I got tired of my GW paints drying in the pot. I use Vallejo Model Colour with some GW, metallics, foundation and a couple of washes. I also have some Coat d'Arms paints and Windsor Newton inks. You will end up paying much the same for all of the paints unless you find a good online supplier. I get my Vallejo from SnM Stuff on ebay and the Coat d'Arms from Blackhat.co.uk. P3, Vallejo Game Colour, Foundry and Reaper Master Series all have their good and bad points. You really need to try a few and make up your own mind. coz September 30th, 2008, 13:12 Hi
I use both Games Workshop and Vallejo paint,I dont think their is much difference between them appart from the metallics. They are better from GW
Personaly if i was going to get a whole new set of paints i would get the following.
GW Foundation paint set
GW washes set
GW metallics
Vallejo game colour set
The Vallejo model colour range are also very good.
Oh and one more thing if you use ink on your bases to darken the sand as i do, don't use the new washes it will cost a fortune.Get a jar of brown PARKER Pen ink and some empty jars and water it down. pass on the word Boomer September 30th, 2008, 14:59 The G.W foundation paints and washes are really great.
But you can make your own wash just google 'magic wash'
and you find out how to do it.
or just click on this simple link

- Boomer. DavidVC04 September 30th, 2008, 15:25 Vallejo's Game Colors and Model Colors are much better.
I use Reaper Master Series, though. They're designed and formulated by a master painter at Reaper. They include some flow improver, binders, and a good base. They're arranged in triads which makes for nice short cuts. Canew September 30th, 2008, 16:16 Personaly if i was going to get a whole new set of paints i would get the following.

This pretty much sums up all the advice I've heard in the painting forum, and at the moment I can vouch strongly for the foundation paints, washes, and Vallejo game color. I also use GW metallics, but that's just because I've never tried Vallejo.
Other than that, I'm slowly transforming my painting stock into the list above. Declor September 30th, 2008, 16:34 What are people using the foundation paints for so much? Why does everyone love them? I thought they'd be too dark to be used for anything other than a base colour? Boomer September 30th, 2008, 17:26 Try painting red without it then you would have answered your own question.
They do make excellent base coats but can be used just like normal paints as well. coldblooded3k September 30th, 2008, 17:52 Try painting red without it then you would have answered your own question.

I'm actually trying to paint orange, but it looks so sloppy on black and too bright over orange, i've also tryed layering to get it solid but thats a Naughta, since Red is alos orange would you recommend a foundation for orange also? and which one is so. Maximus 40k September 30th, 2008, 19:20 Thanks a lot guys. I will need to check out Vallejo. I have plenty of GW paints, but since its been over a year since i have used them, most of them are dried up. :freaked-out: what a waste of money. O well its my own fault. DavidVC04 September 30th, 2008, 20:00 Vallejos and RMS will last longer in their dropper bottles. Declor September 30th, 2008, 20:06 I' painting Red Corsairs at the moment so i know how it takesa dozen coats of red paint to go over black. :p Are you saying that adding a bit of mechrite red will make it stick easier? Can a little be added without changing the colour too much? maguano October 1st, 2008, 05:01 I'm actually trying to paint orange, but it looks so sloppy on black and too bright over orange, i've also tryed layering to get it solid but thats a Naughta, since Red is alos orange would you recommend a foundation for orange also? and which one is so.

Yes the foundation orange would help you lots in this case, at most you need one coat of the foundation orange over your basecoat and then a second caot of blazing orange over that.

Fore sure, i painted my nids in a bright blood red colour. It took one coat of the foundation red over my black basecoat and then two thinned down layers of red gore of that.
The foundation paints on there own are quite dark, the red is almost crimson but it's very easy to highlight them.
Here is the link to the info page on the G.W about foundation paints which might help.

- Boomer. Declor October 2nd, 2008, 21:29 Sweet, i might be able to save a lot of time in tedious coatings of red in that case. Ill experiment with either mixing in the base colour or just painting over it, see which works out best. king88mob October 3rd, 2008, 06:27 Hi

This is pretty much what I use. I have a few GW paints from before I bought my Game Colour set, but other than that, this is me. If you are in the states, Thewarstore usually has a great deal on the entire game colour range as one purchase. It's what I did, and it worked out to a bit under 2$ a bottle.
incidentally, you get a little more paint with the Vallejos, but they are a little thinner, so it ends up being the same.
Oh, and every time I need to do a new colour scheme, i go out and buy the right foundation for the base. I didn't buy the sets, and don't think i will now, but if you are serious about getting a lot of colour options, it's definitely a lot cheaper. | |
