ok ladies and gentlemen

here is a link to my first attempt at painting (http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/painting/138612-my-first-attempt-painting-suggestions-please.html) so you can see for yourself i went and bought some more paint(went ahead and picked up GW Stuff), some new brushes (master's touch 20/0 spotter, 10/0 loew-cornell spotter(favorite for detail))

that being said, i am actually painting this batch of models in stages so that i can get to every area of the model with less hassel. this is strictly the legs and the torso no head, arms or weapons. I am hoping to improve with each member of this assault squad. it is also my first attempt ever dry brushing so i went a little crazy seeing how it comes out on the model.

please as before i would appreciate suggestions and comments.


i don't want to make multiple threads instead i am just going to continue editing this one for this batch of figures. so here is the update, i added the head and arms... only thing left to put on is the jump pack, i tried something different with the shading. thanks for all the help and comments so far. :-)

oh and btw i had no idea what to do with the shield... so umm yeah i know it looks stupid :-P but ideas for dealing with shield would be appreciated.

What immediately jumps out at me is the edging on the armour plates, it's neatly done but the colour looks way off- not like a highlight at all. I'ld recommend using whatever you use as a base and adding white.

Your second port of call should probably be inking, a blue wash should help to dray the colours togeather for you.

Really quite good for a second attempt.
Being neat is always key when painting so take your time and correct your mistakes
as you go along. Also try the washes they are great.

If you live or can get to a G.W take your stuff with you and ask one of the staff for help and advice. They can offer some really good advice and can help you as you work something the internet can't.

the edging was done as my first attempt at dry brushing... i used some bone white just to see how it would lay out on the model that one will probably stay they way it is but the other four will be used in the correct shade thank you for the tip on the color.

i also did use the washes, it may not have show up very well since i used my cell phone camera... or i might just need to use more next time, i wasn't really sure how best to use them.


experiment, ask for suggestions and learn. that's what i am hoping to do.

Not bad. I agree with the two first replies. The edging should be a lighter color, to bring out the edge of the armor (give it some shine). Any GW staff can probably tell you a good Lame-marine... I mean Ultramarine edging color. But aside from that, the second attempt is coming along pretty well.

yeah, i'm new to this :-) so i went easy street for my first army... not many people like ultramarines, or at least consider them boring. but, for the beginning painter/wargamer you can't beat them... now down the road once i get into it more... i will probably strip and repaint them or swap armies entirely... but for now they work well enough


i should also say... there are no GW shope withing a hundred miles of me :-P i'm on my own

None? Within a hundred miles? Boy do I feel bad for you then, I have two of them within a half hour drive! No, wait, three and a half. I'm not sure just how long it'd take to get to the fourth one, but my buddy down the street worked at that one for a time before they transferred him over to my primary GW, so it couldn't be that far away. I'm also within a half hour of the Battle Bunker (essentially the GW HQ in Maryland). I'm spoiled for choice, and even have a place I can thumb through Forgeworld stuff, and buy it without paying obnoxious shipping fees.

Your paintjob is simply excellent for a new painter. I paint only mildly better at the moment (in my own opinion) and I've been playing for a couple years now. I want to see what you make five or ten years from now, I'm certain it'll be Golden Demon winning. Well, if you stick with it anyway.

i will be updating this thread soon since i have added the head and arms, and been painting them right now i am working more on technique than color scheme but i have realized that color scheme is part of the technique, so i am working on that as well. i am trying to focus on highlighting correctly, i'll settle for decently... i've read probably 20 different guides for beginning painters, but when it comes down to it others opinions are what make it a good or bad technique, since you aren't just painting for yourself but for those you play with as well.


i plan on sticking with this for a while, i am 25 with a career and a need for a hobby... only thing i could see being a problem would be an eventual wife... and well my GF likes it too... so um... yeah i'm not stopping... :-)
