This is probably quite a bit outdated, but with the publication of the most recent Chaos Marine Codex, the lost and the damned army list is basically null and void.

Anyone have any suggestions about what mutants and particularly mutant variants could now 'represent' on a table?

I have been toying with using my fast mutants (snake men mounted on cavalry bases) as chaos raptors or perhaps flesh hounds, but nothing seems to fit.

Any help would be appreciated as these are my favorite minatures and I do not wish to retire them since they no longer have a valid army list.

Just continue using the rules? I don't see what's wrong with them.

Alternatively: Daemonhunters. They have some very unique rules - Daemonhosts + Assassins for example, plus the ability to have inducted IG. I'm sure you can think of many inventive excuses to use orbital strike too :P

Since the new CSM codex no longer has a wargear list, your mutants and traitors can no longer buy wargear for their unit champions or their HQ slots.

There are a few other similar problems due to the new Chaos Codex.

Use the old one? :P

Sorry, the LATD list is simply not legal anymore. There are a number of petitions up to make it legal again, but nothing to my knowledge has been done.

And since I only have time to play in tournaments, friendly games of 'using the old list' won't work for me.

Ah, tournaments. Fraid I can't help you there.

Try Imperial Guard with Warrior Weapons?

Or, depending how official (ie, GW-run) the tournies you go to are, and how kind the organisers are, you could approach them with this... (http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/chaos-space-marines/123667-lost-damned.html)

But otherwise, IG seems your best bet, they have an emminantly flexible list that can represent almost anything roughly human size and power. And you can use Allied DH and WH to add even MORE units.

Why do you need the war gear?

I'm building a 1000pt LATD list and i faced the same problem till i realized
that having war gear means less mutants. And thats the bread and butter of the latd
list. Almost all of my units are 'naked' (i.e no upgrades at all) but you can still pick a mark for your champoins and you can still give your mutants blessings as these options are in the list itself so no reason to use the old or new chaos codex.
The LatD army is not a killer list that will win you loads of games but i can't wait to see
all the space marine players cry when i swamp each tacitcal squad with 30 mutants!!!

An effective LatD army ran two powerfists per unit of mutants, one on the boss mutant thing (been a while) and one on the aspiring champion. Two hidden powerfists >>> mutants. LatD was a very effective army (massed hidden powerfists, allied oblits, allied dp, traitor russ).

Could you do that? I'm sure powerfists were 25pts each.. and Mutant Bosses can only take 15pts of wargear...

Or were they one of the Codices that appeared for a while with seperate costs for single-wound and multi-wound models?

Correct, you wouldn't be able to take the power fists any longer.

That's why I was looking for other units I could 'represent' with my fast mutants.

Ie: Flesh hounds, rough riders and even dare I say it raptors...
