View Full Version : How would you react?

Hi there!

Just curious about one thing. How would you react if a friend of yours comes and asks for a game and he says he will want to try out a special character he has made up himself? Would it be okay if he showed the rules and you admitted it was a decent build and okay points value?

In the poll, let's assume you think it's not a uber character but with well written fluff and stuff.

Personally, I would have let him use it.

Comments?

I'd let them use it, and see how it worked.

As an amateur Games Developer (I in no way work for GW;)), I understand how much things like that have to be playtested. So I'd discuss said character with my opponent after the game.

As you said, it is not uber powerful and has decent fluff.
Why not let him give it a go?

Of course you should let him test if it's not some monstrous character that's been made for the sole purpose of being unbeatable.

I would let him have a go. Only through playing with a character will he be able to know if it works, or if it is to powerful for example, and be able to change his stats/fluff. I'm all for a bit of variety!

Yes as long as the character wasnt some super insane unkillable deathmachine. Ifs its balanced no real problem. Though only if I knew the opponent.

If it was obviously broken and/or über, I'd recommend he tweak it first. Otherwise, why not?

sometimes I don't mind a challenge if I'm in the right mood.
but unless its unbeatable yeah, no point.

only if I knew the guy and if it was a large battle

If it was someone I knew, not just a pick-up game, and it was fairly balanced, sure.

guy gets bonus points if his conversion is awesomely painted and original--- I am less likely to allow if he whips out some miniature and says I made up rules for this guy.

If I knew the fella, then yes.

I would say yes if he'd let me see the rules made for the said character, if its not unbeatable then I'd say yes (as long as it's within FOC and other rules).

I for one, would love a decent game that I'd enjoy with a likewise opponent that ins't a rules-lawyer or a bad-loser, those types of people really bring up my guard and makes the game frustrating, other than just plain fun.

I always love fluffy games and if I had a guy that I knew come up to me asking if he could include a homemade character, I'd probably do it for the fluff

I say yes, let him try it. If you see it before and think it's worth the points asked for it, why not let it go? Besides it's a friendly game meant for fun, why not let someone else enjoy the little extra they made up and such?

This hobby is for creativity and as long as it was fair and in keeping with the spirit of fair play and building a story or similar I am all for it.

If I felt that it wasn't outragious point wise or fluff wise, I say bring it on.

Oh and nothing can stand up to my earthshaker battery so it'd die anyways :-D... just kidding... need to get a few basilisks before I can actually make that claim huh?

Well, you say that its your friend and the character is well thought out and fair... why not.

I vote "yes of course." But if we're playing for money, or tournament with a prize, I'd say no way. My friends have a mind for this fantasy stuff, we've been playing DND for almost 20 years. We make some BROKEN characters. Vampires immune to daylight, Orcs that are better mages then elves... things of that nature. All of these stats are logarithms, and once you realize that, you really need to hold yourself back sometimes for the sake of enjoying the game.

seems like most people agree.... im with the majority so long as its not a serious game (tournament or whatever), the character seems worth its points cost (i have no problem with broken so long as you pay for the brokenness :sinister:) and you know that the guy is a fair player then i dont see a problem

I only would if the character is realistic enough and not overpowering. Like an Imperial Guards officer that has stats of a Space Marine Chaplin

In the poll, let's assume you think it's not a uber character but with well written fluff and stuff.

If the 'special character' is not uber then why can't that character just have a normal HQ profile or just use the rules of a offical special character from the army list?

This hobby is for creativity and as long as it was fair and in keeping with the spirit of fair play and building a story or similar I am all for it.

Don't me wrong, I'm all up for weird and wonderful stuff and i really do try to be creative.
I would gladly read my opponents fluff or allow him to use a any intresting conversions or even allow them to use colourful but long forgotten army listd like the old genestealer cult list but when it comes to home grown rules i'm not so keen. It just might be me after playing people who only seem to want to win every single game and care for nothing else.
So i guess i would put my self down as a no, but only in the intrest of fairness.

I'd allow it on two condidiotns. 1) we get another game afterwards without the special character ) It was a good friend, not some random from GW or something.

And obviously he should reasonable, but I also can't see why a character can't just be made with the normal rules, then give some fancy background story - pretty sre you'd get the same warm fuzzy feeling from it :)

I thought I'd throw this in too. There was this one time I watch some silly kid challenge his friend to his made up character - his entire army vs this one guy. What was so special about him? Just a 2+ re-rollable invun save, could turbo boost, and some insane attack in CC...the list goes on.

I guess that's an extreme example of what not to do, but ti happened...

And he was a Space Marine...:P

if it's well done and provides for an interesting game, sure.

If it proves good, i'd allow it in multiple games.

I would not have any problem with it as long it is not overpowering and unrealistic to the main rules. Custom games can be fun.

I think the concentration on "tourney" style play is actually getting a little too prevalent even in "friendly" games - I still remember the days when I asked a friend if my High Elf cavalry unit could be made up of level 5 heroes instead of +3 shock elites.....(additional pips in attacks and initiative, iirc)
If the character looks fun, with interesting mechanics, I wouldn;t even assign a points value (what's the fun in playing equal points anyway!!).

And anywya, here is an example from 3rd edition...If on one side is a goblin horde, and the other side is a 5th edition Emperor dragon, which the gobbos cannot wound, how many points is that dragon worth? If this was a character in a game, where he isn't unreasonable in most situations, but in the gobbo vs. Emperor dragon situation, he is the dragon, even that wouldn't be a total dead-loss....

I'd let him use it if i know and trust him. It's only a game but the things i've people seen come up with (space marine lors with all stat set to 8 ), i wanna be sure he doesn't cheat.

If it looks pretty fair and balanced, I'd say go for it! It'd add some good spice to things. Of course, then I'd expect him to let me test out my Exterminator B or Drop Tanks....
