I've just starting working on this one but any advice would be welcome. I'm having some trouble getting the cloak areas right, was hoping to get it layered with a lighter color under the top color, but all my browns appear to be blending together and I'm not sure I'll get the depth I'm looking for.

Hmm, have you tried using lighter tones such as bleached bone or kommando khaki mixed in with your browns? They should help lighten it when highlighting and bring out the darker browns as a shade.

I'll give that a shot with my bleached bone, any ideas on paint ratios, and should I mix in any water when blending?

Thanks!

I would suggest mixing it to your eye, so to speak, so you can see personaly what works for you. I always water my paints down whenever I'm doing painting of any sort. Blending especially benefits from thinned paint and the general advice these days is to water it down until it's about the same consistency as milk... But obviously try it out yourself so you can see what works for you, again :P

Good luck! and post pics:)

Not bad, not bad at all :)

To me the white background is washing out the colours of the mini itself, is it at all possible to photograph him against grey or similar?

The metallics look very good, dirty and rusted slightly. I like that.

All in all a good job! Wish I got that mini as well though...you've made him look uber :P hehe
