View Full Version : Chicago Meet
Alzer
December 4th, 2008, 03:05
Alright, Jaffar, S_Merc and I are planning out a meet-up at the GW in Chicago. (Battle Bunker is the term I believe.)
This meeting does not yet have a set date, however the consensus is sometime in July or August.
Further plans will be fleshed out as time goes on. Feel free to give suggestions etc.
(Laying this down now, first week of August is not open)

A date in July is recommended, and establishing a set-in-stone date ASAP is very important, to give people time to prepare financially and to give people enough time to mark the date on their calendars. I'd also recommend having various 'events' going on, and some plans as far as hotels, activities, food, etc. goes; how responsible you are as organisers is up to you, but once you decide, you should stick to it.
Check out Toastee's UK Meetup threads, past and present, for examples.
Good luck, guys.

Lost, thanks much for the advice, you make several good points.
OK, here's the rundown so far. I'm checking on the 24th-26th of July. Will be calling tomorrow for availability.
Personally I plan to stay at the nearest Country Inns + Suits which is roughly 20 minutes from the bunker. If anyone wants me to check out other hotel locations just ask. The Address of the battle bunker is
1524 Butterfield Road, Suite A
Downers Grove, IL, 60515
USA
Hotel Address available upon request.
Both 40K, and Fantasy Tournaments are to be set up. PP games can be set up to play at the hotel if you so desire.

Another idea that we (being theyak and myself, last time we attempted to organise a Chicago Meet) was to keep it the same weekend as the Games Day. That way, people will be more likely to make the trek, to attend both events. I was told that the GD goes on in a separate area from the actual Battle Bunker, so the Bunker should be free. Otherwise, people might say "Well, I'd rather go to a GD than a forum Meet, so the GD wins out."

True, the Bunker is about 30 minutes away from the convention center where GD is held.
Since the Chicago GD is always in late July, that seems like it would fit your time frame.
I might head down and meet up if work doesn't ship me off to some other city by that time.

I would probably Attempt to make it down there assuming I can afford to go and that I can get off what ever job I end up working.

I'm happy to help. Here are the sticking points that caused it to fall through the times LN and I (+others) tried to get things together.
1) Underaged participants. If it works out, I'd be willing to come as one of the guests... as an organizer, be aware that underaged participants are YOUR liability. The way around it is to declare parental supervision(like most cons) but I got quite a bit of flack for it. Know that you are legally responsible for any underaged individual that attends if you make it an organized event.
The one thing I don't know if it would be a work around is if you just set a date for people to get together rather than organize stuffs..... it might work around it.(I was unwilling to pay to consult a lawyer on minor liability)
2) dates.... there are several cons and GTs to consider for scheduling. Putting it close to one of those and trying to piggy back might be fun. OR, schedule it DURING a GT or something and have an informal "LO" get together around a GT(more like friends just meeting up at a con) this would allow you to follow the con's attendence rules and throw any minors under whatever liability dodging setup they have for it.

If it's in July, it would be great for me. I should be back home in Chicago for that month before I go out to another trip in the desert. A quick tourney before that would be awesome.
Alzer
December 18th, 2008, 22:32
Alright please note, any members under 18 must have a responsible adult to cover for you in case of accidents, sickness or other troubles for liability purposes.
I'm organizing this, so take responsiblity for the event as a whole but I can't cover up for minors as well.
Also I've contacted the GW, they are open in July and SHOULD have a second room we can pretty much reserve for ourselves by that time.
Also if anyone would like to sub-organize tournament etc. That's really not my cup of tea and I would love the help.

Hope this works out for you guys. :D if you need any pointers, feel free to ask, but I should think you wouldn't need to. Lost/Tulugaq and Theyak know what they are talking about in regard to this sort of thing too. :)
Good luck lads.

Bring all the armies you can!
So far events-wise I'm thinking to have an 1750/1850 tourney, on that Saturday. (the 25th)
There has been talk about a giant appoc game "Tyranids vs. Imperials" since most of our event goers seem to have one or the other. This would likely be a gathering of several players for each side.
Friday would be good, IMO for 1k random games and generally hanging out time.
Still working on getting an opening but as far as I know they have no events this weekend and we should be golden, perhaps even get our own room.

NOt to sidetrack you all, but I'm curious, I lived in Chicago for almost 2 years, near wrigley field, and for the third largest city, I couln'dt get over the fact that they have not a single store with tables withing the city limits.
I had to go to Downer's Grove for the closest store and it is almost 45 minutes. What's up with chi town?
Alzer
January 11th, 2009, 09:31
Well, yes technically we won't be in Chicago itself. Other than that I have no answer for you, since I don't have a clue why there isn't at least a local game shop within city limits.

This store allow non-GW games within the place? Don't want a angry mob of nerds unsuccessfully try to kill me.
Also, anyone interested in games of WHFB and WM/Hordes? Playing 40k for hours on end isn't my cup of tea usually. Also I might bring my UFS cards and a special surprise I have in store, if I don't get lazy.

Well we're going to be at a major Games Workshop center Stunted_Merc, so non-GW games are gonna be a no until further notice. However play whatever you want at the hotel.
Except russian roulette, please none of that.
We'll see about WFB, hopefully there are enough players.

Alright folks! I got ahold of the Manager of the Chicago Battlebunker finally!
LO Meet Chiago IS scheduled on Games Day. If anyone wants to be going to that, please make separate arrangements. If we have enough people who want to spend a day loligagging around GD with the LO flag etc, we can discuss it.
Also, the battlebunker reported to having 50 gaming tables. The availability of these tables is unknown and Paul (the manager) informed me that phone spam is our best bet for reservations, ( I'm on top of this don't worry ;) ) Odds are though, we'll have PLENTY of space to kick the everliving crap out of one another.
BTW who's sewing our flag?
Around April I'd like people to have a better idea of whether or not you are coming, this way I know how many hotel rooms and table we will need for the event.
PLEASE try to contact LO members in your region to carpool if you need a ride, I know I for one am taking a boatload of folks down from the Twin Cities area. Carpooling means roadtrip, roadtrip means the 5-30 hour drive is FUN instead of LAME.
Thank you,
Alzer

I'm still waiting on my orders from DA. Once I have those in hand, I'll know where I'll be stationed, and be able to plan accordingly. Odds are looking like I'm going to be stuck back at Ft. Bragg, NC, so, I may fly in, or I may drive, depending. If midwest stationed, I may be able to pick up a hitchhiker or two, but no guarantees as yet. We'll be seeing, soon enough.

I've got most things under hand, thanks though, the best you can do is promise to show up, we need a couple actual Marine players to beat up. :sinister:

If worse comes to worse, I'll probably have both a chaos and necron army there, so you could use one of those :-P

I thought you were working on a ravenguard army?
I am indeed, but progress is slow and the Tau came along before them. I've collected several armies (owning models), including: Tau twice, Eldar twice, Necrons twice, Imperial Guard, Chaos Space Marines, Space Marines (twice now with my current RG), Dark Eldar twice, and I've brainstormed ideas for just about every single army with plans to collect them.
I have a little bit of difficulty hanging on to one idea at a time... though, I think I'm going to be sticking with Raven Guard.

So, plan on me being there with around 2k points of (hopefully) painted Iron Warriors and perhaps if my arm is twisted I could bring some Dark Elves for WHFB though to be honest I have never played a full game of WHFB in my life.

Recent reports from a friend in the area have brought me some important intel.
Apparently the Battle Bunker is next door to a rather fine laser-tag establishment. As another optional activity for comers to the Meet. I've also been given news that we shall have somewhat of a tourguide for the area, so will be able to find prime eating/drinking establishments.
It's getting to be crunch time as far as getting rooms and travel reservations for low rates, please do what you can to make your arrangements. I'm going to take a look at hotel reservations this week to find out what's going to be our best option in the area.
Also Please start tossing out some solid RSVPs if you are at all capable of doing so. I like solid responses, they tell me how many hotel rooms to reserve ;) and how many tables to reserve at the Battlebunker as well.

i'm fairly sure you can remove storm maiden from that list of people going; judging her 'quitting' LOchat and not having posts on the forum since then in late February... i'd be very surprised if she did show up to meet all the people she had /ignore'd in the chatroom.
i'm still on the fence, i'd like to say maybe but in all circumstance and possibilities its more than likely i'll have other obligations (ie work, classes, reactivation, or general disinterest in meeting merc).

Duly noted Certs.
I'm going to get in contact with the Bunker manager again to reinforce our time and presence there.
Also I need hotel stayers to get their names my way! We have the rooms and it will not end well if they remain unfilled!
EDIT: So far as I know we have 4 king suites reserved at a discount price at the Country Inns and Suites in Napperville, the rate for a room for the entire weekend is around $250 (that's the normal rate still waiting for the quote on discount rooms), details here: http://www.countryinns.com/hotels/ilnapcty
Thus far, I'll be in one room with my g/f, and Nhyx didn't you reserve one as well? I strongly suggest we get several people per room, that way everyone will save more money. I am as of yet unaware if the rooms will be conjoined or not, more details on this soon. PLEASE get back to me about rooms though if you want them.

---------- Post added at 22:45 ---------- Previous post was at 22:42 ----------
Oh and as far as attendance, looks like it's probably going to be 3 of us coming. Any idea what the tournaments gonna be like? Painted models required etc?

Even with beer its going to be a sausage fest with toy soldiers.

I'm no GT official, so rules will be a bit lax. Have the models basecoated, tabletop paintjob would be HIGHLY preferred.
Tournament is 1750, to be held on Saturday, I'm thinking to start around 5 or 6 so folks have time to go to Gamesday. I'll be rolling the missions for each ROUND of the tourney seperately but all games will be the same mission + deployment and I might even have something special set up for missions.
bharak do you need lodging? I believe there's a spot or two open in the hotel still.

While true, beer makes everything better
And in regards to lodging, I'm only bout 30 minutes away from the bunker. We were thinking of hitting up Gamesday in the morning and then heading to the bunker for the tourney. The painting question only came up because I know my army with be done but theres a good chance the 2 guys coming with me won't have 100% completed armies however they will probably be mostly painted

As long as they have some semblance of a paintjob, I'll let it pass.
Some of our older members are only promising a handful of space marines.
By the way! Please get your armies posted here:What armies will you have for the Chicago Meet? (http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/usa-meet-ups/156312-lo-us-meet-09-what-armies-will-you-have-thread.html)

I'm sure the majority of it will be painted for sure, they would rather not bring unpainted minis at all it just comes down to rather they will have time to finish them before the tourney. Although I haven't really played in any tourneys I don't think I could ever bring unpainted models myself. Ill have to start working on a 1750 list I'm accustomed to 2000 point games heh

Hookay, so news update for the Hotel. Seems we managed to get all the rooms filled up, pending on a couple of you folks cramming together.
#1 Alzer + Alzer's g/f
#2 Jaffar_Hassad, Stunted_Merc, Savant, Certs?
#3 Captain Sarathi + Co.
#4 ZeeWulf, Nhyx (if it's OK with you Nhxy)
So that's the list, lemme know if you have questions at all.

On that note, I shall grow a beard.
And wear spikes to bed.
So, are we taking the last room?
Alzer
May 31st, 2009, 08:07
Aye looks that way. If we get any last minute takers you guys can have them on the floor or something.
Nhyx
May 31st, 2009, 16:37
Damnit, beards are tickley!
But yeah, I dont care if I need to share a room
As long as they don't snore, otherwise they're getting teabagged!

I'll participate in the Ceremony, but, I refuse to tote it around as well; I've managed to avoid being the bearer for the past six years, I sure ain't carryin' one now!

Hey folks, quick thought. Since gamesday is on Saturday do we want to plan something else that day? maybe pickup games and deal with the Tournament on Friday? I don't want to rush people getting there, but at the same time I want the folks who are headed to GamesDay to be able to participate in the tournie without us running out of time. I've been informed by the (new) BB manager that it's going to be a major crunch time weekend so we need to get this organized ASAP!

That probably be best. Although I wont be coming into town until late Friday by what my father tells me so it would be great if you guys get that out of the way before Gameday. Speaking of Gameday how will I be able to tell who you guys are if I havent seen you guys before? Will the people going to Gameday be carrying the flag or something or will you have a big sign saying 'Hey idiot were the guys from LO!' :rotfl:
O' and is the new managers name Paul or something cause I might have met the guy before? :rotfl:

Confirmed 100% I will be there
Although, only bringing around 2500 points of chaos.
Since I'll be between here in Europe, and moving to Korea, didn't have anywhere near enough room to pack in the necrons (monolith was way to big, damn thing), and my vampire counts. So I guess you'll all have to get frustraited with my Nurgle/Slaanesh zomg why won't they just die list.
Though, I'll get to show off my pretty new nurgled out PlagueSlaughterer (acting as a defiler, you'll see).
Looking forward to the meetup
Alzer, you still picking up that Keg or Halfkeg of Leinies on the way down?
Need some cash to cover it beforehand?
Alzer
July 9th, 2009, 16:58
Yeah I could, and I'll be good for cash on the way down but some help for the bill after would be greatly appreciated.
15 days folks!
Also can we do a re-count of the rooming situation? We've had some changes, and I wanna get things re-organized

Hey all... Well, looks like I'll be down there in time for the meet on Saturday. I live in Milwaukee so the drive isn't too bad. I'll probably head out early Saturday night or if nobody minds me crashing on a hotel room floor I can hang around Sunday too.
Now I just have to push myself to finish painting my Iron Warriors before the 25th.
Alzer
July 19th, 2009, 19:02
Hey guys.
The Meet is in 5 days, and for those of you planning to room in the hotel I've got lined up I NEED clarification of that information. Due to the changes in occupants we have had I'm not sure how many rooms we need. Keep in mind you will need to have a credit card to pay for rooms even though I'm reserving them.
If you do not tell me by 11PM Wednesday July 22nd that you would like a room (or space in a room) I will not keep the reservations and you will need to find your own accommodations.
It would really be appreciated if people would be more responsive with this, it makes it excessively difficult for me to organize everything when nobody ever responds.
Also Nhyx, I'm not going to be able to pick up that keg, sorry. So it's gonna be a general Byob.
Nhyx
July 19th, 2009, 21:15
No biggy, Alzer, I'm a drunky, so I'm an expert at shenagaling bottles of booze into places with me.
Hell, I walked into a concert in tinley park on friday night with a bottle of vodka, wide out in the open, when they made the people I was with throw away their plastic bottles of pepsi. :-P
----------
And I'm still good for the hotel room, forgot to add that
$60 a night?
I'll even take some crashers on the floor/couches whatnot, if they bring beer as payment! :-P
----------
Will also be bringing around 1500 or so points of Chaos Demons, in varying stages of paint, if someone needs to borrow an army/wants to try a new one
Alzer
July 19th, 2009, 21:20

Tournament tomorrow is starting at 3pm, to clarify, I'd prefer if anyone wishing to take part would arrive at 2pm (or earlier), with your models and a 1750pt list ready that would really help to get things going. 2:50 is the cut-off point for tournament entry.

Alright, I'm not going to be around on Sunday, and I'm not sure if anyone else is either. So if anyone wants to plan something today go ahead. Otherwise I think I'm going to be calling the first Chicago Meet a wrap. I'll have pictures, and our tournament report, up sometime this evening once I'm home (or maybe tomorrow morning.)
Bharak, Marrius, thanks for showing up, I had a really good time. And two of the most ridiculous game endings I've ever seen.
Everyone who couldn't make it, you were missed, however! I will be planning another Meet again next year, so you better show up to that one. :D

Hey I wanted to say thanks for having patience with my little bro. He got really excited that you guys let him in on the game and I think it was his first win.
