View Full Version : Question about the Fay Enchantress and lance

I've been looking into starting a MSU army with a Fay Enchantress (for fluff reasons), and I was wondering how do you guys field her given her awkward base when lined up with grail guardians? Assuming I'd like the idea of having a 2nd unit of 'grail knights', how many would you take in her unit? I take it lance formation is out of the question? if you wanted to do lance with her, how would line her up?
I suppose I have another question about MSU units and lance formation. I assume you typically do 3 wide 2 deep to break the opponent, then reform on the next round to maximize damage. But then I heard someone mention just flat out going 5-6 wide from the start. Given the 25mmx50mm bases wouldn't this be too wide considering you'll have tons of little units running around? What are everyone's thoughts on 3x2 versus 6x1?
While I'm at it, I might as well verify... I didn't see this explicitly mentioned in the army book, but am I right to assume that the mounts in the 2nd and 3rd ranks do not get to attack with their knights?

I've used the Fay Enchantress quite a bit. I've tried her with her Grail Guardians, in a lance and alone. The most success I've had with her is when she is by herself. I've found it a lot easier to manoeuvre, especially with Silvarons M10

I don't think it matters too much does it? Either you'll be wide, maybe cause congestion or long and be susceptible to flank charges...I think it just depends on your playing style. I prefer to run my knights in lance formation to keep the 'Bretonnian' feel...

Well the army book says 'knight models'...model refers to both mount and rider so both should be able to attack. That's how I've always played it anyhow.

I do not have the book in front of me as I loaded it to a friend until Saturday. I believe Fay has to be run with Grail Knights and can never leave them. But here is how the lance formation works. Say Fay and her five grail Knight escort.

With all the G they can attack on the charge but she has no line of sight.
Or with Fay and 8 knights it looks like this.

with all the G they can attack on the charge but again she has no line of sight.
Of course she can still dispell.
This formation is why they say the lance formation is the most powerful in the game. Wheeling is easier than 5 wide.
Now there is only one or two reasons why the Bretonnias would get out of this formation.
We have a guy that plays a all cav and shooting WE army. You just can not get a hold of him. I have won a draw, just points short of a victory by breaking the lance and using my knights nine wide. He had no place to hide.

yeah, but doesn't the Fay use a 40mmx40mm base? One can't really line her up in lance formation neatly. I was wondering how you dealt with that.
I didn't know, but I went and checked anyway. The book says that she may be accompanied by grail guardians. She doesn't have to be.

I stand corrected she may be accomplied. If she is she can never choose to leave this unit.
I do not have her therefore I did not notice the size difference. Maybe someone else has personnel experience with this and can help us. I guess I will have to go out and buy her. I will take this question to the committee around the local gameshop and see what the experts have to say. You know what they say about calling them at GW.
