View Full Version : BSB on Pegasus

Anyone tried running a BSB on a Royal Pegasus?
I've never really heard it used very often, but the option is there...and it would be nice to have a BSB fly to give support to whichever combat needs it most. (Either by a charge, or a fly by to give re-roll break test).
If you would mount him on a Pegasus would you make him flying combat res and jump into battles, or try and make him as survivable as possible (Gromril Great Helm etc) due to the decresed armour save?

I can't see it working too well to be honest, it seems that you are making a very important model quite vulnerable.
Mounting him on a royal pegasus means that he can never join units, robbing him of survivability and the protection gained from being inside a unit.

That's the main problem isn't it...survivability.
There was a thread earlier about running a solo BSB on a horse...that might be better in many cases.

Yea, survivability is the key. Quite a few Bret Players I have read about run a 'roving' BSB.
(I.e. Virtue of Duty, Warbanner, BSB, Barded Steed - +3 CR by himself, handy to help out different units).
You don't really lose that much speed either (18" as opposed to 20"), and you have a better save (don't think that the Royal Peg gives a bonus to your save) and you can join units to help protect him.

Thing is, that's 18" assuming he can march (the main advantage flying has, really). But you're right, he doesn't get the increased save on a pegasus (as it's a monster).
As I don't collect Bretts (not yet anyway) and hardly ever run BSBs in my lists, I can't really answer the question that accurately, sorry.

A BSB on a single character sounds interesting but you are putting a lot of points on a small unit. Giving your opponent easy points. A noble on a steed capable of joining other units could be an option.

Uh... I think it's 16" instead of 18" for a Barded Steed.
Well, the only real use I could see for a Pegasus mounted BSB is in a peasant heavy army with the Virtue of Empathy and the Warbanner. He'd give your peasant hordes pretty solid leadership and be able to rush into battle to tip the tides in your favor if need be.
But there are much better ways to do this, I think. A unit of Pegasus Knights in the vicinity can boost the leadership, and if they hit a flank or rear, can offer much larger CR bonuses than a single BSB.

I would ONLY suggest doing this if you are running a Pegasus heavy army. Which would mean a Lord General on a Royal Pegasus, as well as at least 1 unit and 1 character, or 2+ units of Pegasi. Otherwise he will become too much of a fire magnet, especially if he's on his own.
Personally I prefer the CR kitted BSB in either a unit of KotR or KE, but not alone.
Also, you could kit yourself out on a Pegasus to have a 4+ rerollable save (heavy armor + helm), but you wouldn't be able to have a magical banner, meaning to take one you would have *gulp* a 5+ save.

You still get a bonus to your armor for being mounted, you just don't get an additional bonus for barding because Pegasi aren't barded. Thus, a standard paladin on royal pegasus is a 3+ save, a BSB is a 4+ due to lack of shield, and Gromril Great Helm on either will improve it by one. As such, a paladin with it on a pegasus is still pretty tough to get rid of, but I don't fancy my odds with a 3+ rerollable on somebody as expensive and vulnerable as a flying BSB.

No you don't get an armour save because it's a monstrous mount.

The brits have to run a BSB, sorry it is in the book.
You are putting a highly attractive unit, worth victory points, all by itself.
I like the BSB with knights of the realm and my lord with my grail knights.
