So I've been thinking about getting a dwarf army for LOTR since I like dwarves but not their play style in Fantasy and I have been hearing positive things about LOTR and the new War of the Ring. So do they play differently than fantasy dwarves? which I generalize as a gunline most of the time. Can a decent army be made of mostly warriors and rangers with one or two heroes?

Also I was thinking about including Great Eagles, can I do this? and would it be effective? seems like the best way to add some speed to the dwarves. Are great eagles good, I can't find any info on people using them.

Thanks for any help!

Cheers

LOTR dwarves rarely use the gunline since ther shooting is short ranged. Most dwarf players fields a mix of warriors rangers and khazad guard, backed up by strong heroes such as Balin or Dain. Speed isnīt a big problem in LOTR dwarves only move one inch shorter than others and are not very vulnerable to cavalry or shooting, so you will probaly not suffer from lack of fast units.

Depends on the army you face, with a one inch shorter movement, and the fact that throwing weapons are move and fire with a range of 6" mean certain armies, like wood elves, corsairs, and a few other can keep backing away six and pelt you with throwing weapons. The only real way to counter this is with some good shooting, I think normal dwarf bowmen are better than dwarf rangers, since there bow is stronger, and they have a much better defence, so they can handle combat very well.

For the most part there movement isn't that bad, but when faced with a lot of thrown weapons your shooting game has to be effective, because it will be hard to catch them, you will have to use heroic moves to get into combat, and try to surround them so they can't get away, and shoot the ones that do.

Dwarves are great in WotR for the previously mentioned reasons. I think eagles as an ally would be a great addition to a dwarf army.

I'm in the planning phases of a dwarf army right now. I'm looking at having 2 4 company formations of shielded warriors, 3 company formation of bow armed warriors, a 3 company formation of khazad guard and a 3 company formation of rangers as the base for my WotR army.
