View Full Version : 1000 Imperial list against Eldar

Got challenge by a friend of mine to play a 1000 pt game against his Eldar. I have no idea what he is fielding and I'm rolling Imperials. After looking through the rulebook and tacticas, I'm assuming that weapon batteries will be a win here, especially ones that have a decent range to them.
Here's my idea so far:
Segmentum Obscurus List
Fleet Admiral w/ 2 rerolls - 75
x2 Tyrant-class cruiser - Long-range upgrade - 390
x1Vengeance-class grand cruiser - 230
x3 Sword-class Frigates - 105
x3 Sword-class Frigates - 105
x3 Sword-class Frigates - 105
Total Points: 1010
Vengeance is there for the 60 cm guns and tyrants are upgraded so they can reach out a bit farther. Swords are around to try and at least semi-compete with the Eldar zipping all over the place as well as being able to let fly with a decent strength salvo.
Comments and criticism?

Firstly - I like the list! Although, personally, I would drop a squadron of Firestorms and one re-roll - the second re-roll isn't worth the points and you will NEVER come even close to matching the Eldar for speed and manuverability, so even trying is a waste of your time and will result in failure. If however you drop the squardon and the re-roll, you'll have 185 points to play with - which will get you another Tyrant! This will be more effective as you will invariably have to take multiple hits before you get the chance to return some fire. You've got the right idea, in that Weapons Batteries are the way to go and having a bit of range is a very good idea. You should use the Firestorms to guard your cruisers against ordnance or occasionally nipping out to finnish a crippled ship.

Ah, running Swords, though, not Firestorms. Dropping the Squadron and the re-roll only frees up 130 points. Only thing I could buy for that price in an Endeavour light cruiser and I'd rather have the 3 Swords and reroll over the Endeavour.
I suppose I could run two squadrons of two on the swords and take another Tyrant with the Long-range upgrade, but I rather like keeping the escorts around.

Sorry, wrong name - I meant Sword, though. And your list didn't add up to 1000pts in the first place - have a check! With the points saved, you could afford a cruiser, as I said.

Am I adding these points up right?
I get this to come out to 1010 points so I'm technically over, though we both agreed on a 10 point buffer.
But I could be wrong.

Right, sorry - I've had a proper look now. I'm going to completely backtrack and say that you're actually on 1060 points - you only include the 75pts for the 2 extra re-rolls and not the 50pt cost for the Ld. 8 Fleet Admiral. So you're going to have to do some chopping. I don't have time to disect it for you, so I'll reiterate what I said earlier - forget speed, go for shots and durability.
Apologies for the confusion.

List 1
Fleet Admiral - 1 extra reroll - (what I meant before was two rerolls total, not 2 rerolls extra) - 75
x2 Tyrant-class - Long-range upgrade (195 each) - 390
x1 Vengeance-class - 230
x3 Sword-class - 105
x3 Sword-class - 105
x3 Sword-class - 105
Total: 1010
List 2
Fleet Admiral - 50
x3 Tyrant-class - Long-range upgrade - 585
x1 Vengeance-class - 230
x2 Sword-class - 70
x2 Sword-class - 70
Total: 1005

First of all you should talk to your friend that if you play a 1000 pts game you do not go over, not even 1 points.
Second of all I hate tailoring fleets. It is much more interesting building a fleet which is balanced versus various opponents.
Among our group we never tell which fleet we will bring.
Third of all, in an anti Eldar fleet the Tyrant is good, otherwise I would always suggest the Dominator.
Fourth of all, if the Eldar player has a decent torpedo amount with carrier in support you are going to face a rough ordnance phase.
edit:
I give you this:
your opponent could bring an all Nightshade fleet. Prince + re-rolls + 20 Nightshades for example. Or an Eclipse plus Nightshades.
Now keep that in mind and try to balance your fleet also that you can withstand a 1000pts Tau armada fleet:
2 Explorers, 2 Hero's 5 Orca's, Kor'el or sumtin like that.

Normally I'm not for tailoring either, but right now we're both semi-new to the game and we're just playing around. This isn't a standard list I plan on using at all.
Ordnance is going to be rough, but I didn't find using the dictator worth its 220 points. Though swapping out the Vengeance for a Mars might work. But right now, I'm sticking with the Tyrants and experimenting more. Same goes for my friend playing Eldar. Game is going to be on Thursday, will let people know how it went.
Thanks both of you for the help and putting up with my noobish-ness. :act-up: Reps for ya.

Rather lack-luster game for some reason. I can post some pics my friend took to give referrence for a few turns.
He's fairly new to Eldar it seems as he did not nearly use the asteroids as much as he should have and he went very cruiser heavy so critical hits plagued him the whole game.
List I went with was something different than earlier. Swapped out the Vengeance for an Exorcist.
Eldar
x2 Eclipse
x2 Aurora
x3 Hemlock
Strange list, I was expecting a lot more in the range of escorts.
Result ended up in a win for the Imperials. Niether Tyrant was really harmed and the Exorcist took 4 points of damage. Lost most of the escorts, but DAMN were they effective at chewing appart the Eldar.
Eldar losses: All 3 Hemlocks, 1 Aurora, 1 Crippled Aurrora.
We were pressed for time and I disengaged after wiping out the hemlocks and he finally got smart and pulled back to the asteroids. But by that point I had won in victory points by a hair.
I don't know, they game didn't seem all that fun or challenging really. Then again he was a newbie Eldar and I had a tailored list.
Eh, not going to do that ever again. Tailoring lists is just.....boring.

Even without tailoring that Eldar player should be beaten. Tssk. Corsair Eldar thrive on escorts.
