Hello Bretonnian players,
I have been in search of starting a warhammer fantasy army and the Brettonnian army is one of the armies which has caught my attention. Before buying any models I have a few questions. First, I am aware that the Brettonnian army is largely based off of its cavalry, but can a Brettonnian army still be competitive/flexible with a good chunk of points dedicated to Men at Arms/Infantry? Second, does the Bretonnian army have multiple different builds/styles of play, or is there one primary style of play. I have heard that a Brettonnian is a "point and click" army, but does this make them tacticless/and boring? My last question is, How tough are Bretonnian Lords and Heroes, I know they are humans, but do they perform better than the Empire's heroes/Lord level characters? Thanks everyone for their replies, it is much appreciated on this end!!

The primairy style of play for Bretonnians is definitely the cavalry heavy army, which charges forward. Variation can be made by adding more peasant units. I'm unsure about how competitive these armies are as I never played with or against them. This is mainly due to the fact that I also have an Empire army which is based around the infantry/warmachine theme. So if I want infantry, I usually take that army.
I does put me in a nice position to compare the heroes and lords of the 2 human races. And at first sight they are not much different. The empire has the master engineer (hardly used) and the warrior priest (wizard/combat dude intermediate with MR1). And their wizards have a far better selection of lores. Their captains and combat lords however are weaker than the Bretonnian counterparts.
This usually results in the following difference:
* Empire characters are generally build to support the unit they are in. Magic is usually defensive, but an offensive orientation is possible.
* Bretonnian characters are generally build to be a combat force on their own. Magic is always defensive. For which prupose the MR1 on our damsels is great.
I find the tactical aspect very hard to judge. Yes, there is an element of point-and-click. But click wrong, and your knights will be biting of more then they can chew. So tactics are definately needed. I never found playing Bretonnians boring, but I do welkom the variation of playing Empire, High Elves or other races, if I am in crazy mood.
Hope my ramblings have been of any help.

I can forgive people for saying bretonia was a point and click army as the most commonly used lists revolve around a second turn charge...
However a nice varient list is to take a pair of trebuchets and around 40 archers (2 units of 10 one skirmishing 20 ) not to mention your smattering of knights and damsels. you sit in your deployment shooting and when your opponent desides to move into your half of the board charge them! also make good use of pegesus knights and yeomen for march blocks.
(this is the kind of list i generaly use yet it has introduced me to the world of "Math hammer" eg.you deployed 12inches on and i was on 6inches there is around a 45degree angle...)
anouther list is the peasant heavy list eg. many units of 25 Men at arms... this army is only realy there to show of the generals skill you cannot hope to win games on the principle of "my unit has so many atacks at str5..." its all about ranges and flanks and static combat res.
so a verry hard army to play with yet there is a staff member who i have heard is undefeated useing this army...
there are many other lists possible combined arms lists i have seen work well but i only have seen these varients in action so i cant say about other lists... but if you want more info on my own list and style of play you only have to ask...
