not an empire player (yet... have to finishing painting my ogres first)
I was wondering if anyone out there ever takes an Empire Dragon? I don't own the army book but believe that it is an option. Is it worth the cost, the character choice(s)?
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Only Karl Franz gets it, but when he is on the thing, I hear it has the power of 10 lightning bolts.

in 5th edition you had the option of mounting any character on a dragon.
I know they have sought to seek out a balance of sorts in 7th edition and while a Dragon could be used, it probably should not. And even karl Franz, he should be on a griffin, not a dragon.

I have played it once against a Chaos Dragon. It is trult an amazing battle. Gharal Maraz (his fancy Hammer) is the only choice when he mounts a dragon. Don't let that guy try to tell you its overpowered. Chaos has dragons. High elves has a dragon. Wood elves have a dragon. Orcs have a dragon. So have at it. Great times

as an empire player I once used a dragon in a battle.
The scenario was I was playing with the ONE PERSON that I have ever known that used Chaos Dwarfs, and we were essentially doing that one battle between CD vs HE that is in the CD sourcebook. 3000 points, no restrictions on weapons, armor, magic items, etc, etc.
So I used a Grand Master of the White Wolves Knight's on a dragon, to essentialy the get the effect I wanted. I think I used the Armor of Protection, Spell Shield, and the Hammer of Sigmar as my equipment.
From what I recall it was a damn good battle.

Orcs have a dragon.
Orcs have wyverns, which just aren't in the same league.
Empire have bigger and better toys to play with than dragons (Tanks, cannons)...so I'd say that in your 'average' battle it's not that necessary.

how does the empire dragon compare with the chaos, zombie, forrest, and high elf dragons?
The whole fact that I'm looking into an empire army, is the fact that I can build almost any kind of army: cavalry, shooty, close combat... and that I have access to monsters, war machines, fast cav, all the magic lores, etc, etc. I never thought that a dragon was also in the army book until I was browsing through it for a second....this makes me even more interested (even though I would probably never field the thing).
Having a ton of options with empire will feel like christmas morning compared to the narrow selection ogres offer me.

All dragons are equal in terms of stats. 6 all across except attack which is 5. Chaose dragons are a bit better as they have 6 attacks and 2 flame templates instead of 1.

Well, while empire has dragons, getting one, as is always the fact with dragons, requires a lot of points, a hell of a lot. But then, having a terror causing dragon rampaging around with the Warhammer will cause grown man to cry for their mother.
As to the actual model, if i where ever to field 1, i'd get the HE dragon, that model is 7 shades of nice.

I'd say the HE Dragon is the superior one - the Star Dragon eats all the other variants alive and then asks for seconds (but I would say that!) A HE Dragon Prince with Star Dragon is a tough prospect due to the ferocity of the attacks from the Dragon, and the potential to be equipped woth Star lance.
I would sya that Karl Franz on Drago is a immensely powerful unit, more than capable of taking down even greater demons using the Ghal Maraz, and hence is a reasonable prospect if you are facing down opponents with uber units like Dragons, GDs, Treemen etc. Apart from cannonry, an Empire army isn't going to be able to deal with a dragon otherwise...

It's amazing that people can't tell the difference between a Wyvern and a Dragon. It's like the difference between a Mustang GT and a Ford GT...

Lol, most europeans would find that distinction a hard one. Here's one for you, the difference between a Renault Clio and Renault Twingo?
Back on topic, how often do you see imperial dragons fielded?

I haven't seen one fielded under the current army book.
For my brothers from across the Atlantic:
Ford GT: limited release mid-engine supercar. 0-96 km/h in 3.7 seconds, 1/4 mile (~400m) in 11.2 seconds, reaching 211 km/h in that time and space.
Ford Mustang GT: mundane sports car. 0-96 in 4.9 seconds...

yeah - I know the Ford GT40/90 cars are true supercars. Mustangs are just, well, meh...

Doesn't the mustang have leaf springs suspension or something archaic like that?

Sorry to drag the thread off topic...the point was to illustrate that two items might seem or look similar and be FAR different.
