as you know you can take 2 heralds with 1 HQ but could you take 2 greater daemons and then 1 herald?

No, Its 2 heralds as 1 hq or 1 greater demon. So you can mix and match them.

4 heralds
2 heralds 1 greater demon
2 greater demons
Also the named guys are unique meaning only allowed 1 of each named guy as per normal restrictions to HQ.

Skulltaker + herald = 1 slot
bloodthirster = 1 slot

so yes, you can :D

Skulltaker is a herald, as is epidemius, The Masque and The Blue Scribes. You may take 2 heralds per HQ choice but you are not allowed to take more then one of each Special Character.

GD and GD Special Characters take up a full HQ choice

Therefore you can have a bloodthirster (takes up one HQ slot), Skulltaker and even have one more herald (between them take up another HQ slot) should you like as long as it isnt Skulltaker again.

Well while on the subject of Heralds and HQs, I was wondering about another situation. Can a single Herald count as the 1+ HQ requirement? I ask because in the codex it clearly says in big bold letters "UP TO TWO" Heralds can be taken for each HQ slot, but it does not necessarily say that it requires 2 heralds for the slot.

(I also ask this because I am new to 40k and only have 1 model that could "count as" a herald. :\ )

You are correct in your assumption you only need to take one herald for a HQ slot if you like, there is no requirement to take two. Your minimum HQ choice to fill you FOC slots is either 1 Herald or 1 GD
