View Full Version : The Death Bringers - CSM fluff in progress

Ok, so Im trying to figure out a good, home-made fluff theme for my army but i just want to know what people think of my idea first before i get too serious with it. This is just a basic outline of my Death Bringers traitor chapter so please feel free to tell me what you think, im not too deep into any kind of story yet. (Also, if anyone could suggest a good rival for my army, it would be greatly appretiated.)

Name:The Death Bringers Chaos Chapter (Traitors of the Dark Angels)

Homeworld: Kothgren

Colors: main-Dark Angels Green, trim-Shining Gold

Culture: Devout followers of Khorne and Nurgle, they beleive that these two gods together are the gods of war, carnage, and harsh vengeance. A dangerous traitor chapter to face, usually after the first battle against any race, planet or faction, the Death Bringers will hold true to their name and strive to bring death to any that would oppose them. The Death Bringers hate their enemies more than many other chaos marine possibly could. The greatest of their enemies is the Dark Angels and their subsidary chapters, the Ultramarines, the Tau, and the Orks.

Strategy: Send up most of the infantry in transports to lock the enemy in close combat, deep strike almost everything you can inside the gaps in the enemy line (off of the banners if possible), and keep heavy firepower at long to mid range, firing at the vehicles or heavy infantry.

Important Characters: Sinpox the Vile – Daemon Prince of Nurgle, The Charnel Lord – Chaos Lord of Khorne.

History: The chapter was formed long ago, just after the Horus Heresy. The Dark Angels chapter was still recovering from its great number of marines gone traitor. The imperium had never yet really tried to explore the eye yet and usually avoided entering it (still a common thing). Not many of the Dark Angels saw much wisdom in charging after the heretics of their chapter for it would have led them straight to the eye of terror. However, when the Dark Angels suffered a crippling blow while aiding the defense of Cadia, they held true to their hate and sought a great vengeance for their fallen brothers. A large force of the marines in reserve were sent to seek out and destroy the daemons and traitors that had beaten them so badly. Brother-Captain Krassius Hayden and Brother-Captain Feylorn Tarle were sent to lead the force against the tide of chaos. When they encountered their enemy however, they found that their hated foes had suffered quite a few losses as well. When they witnessed the enemy retreating toward the eye, the marines were filled with such an inhuman hate, that they all charged their ships, as if run by one mind, furiously towards the warp-spawn and heretics. The vengeful marines hunted their foe through the eye of terror and amazingly were not taken at the time by chaos. The hate in every one of them was enough to let them survive. They tracked down their enemy to an infested planet called Kothgren where they cornered their long-hunted prey. Little did the Dark Angels realise through their rage, that Kothgren was a planet that the imperium had never heard of before, yet some how, the marines knew its dark and tainted name at the sheer sight of it. The chaos on the planet, being nothing but scattered warbands, assortments of daemons and random masses of chaos, were completely obliterated by the infuriated marines and they did not stop their massacre until every last living thing on the planet was destroyed. Once the marines had finished, they realised just what they had done and were now stranded in the middle of the largest concentration of chaos in the galaxy. After many years the gods squabbled over such a prize of warriors. Constantly, the whispers of the gods rang in their ears. Eventually, two gods were successful in tempting these marines. Khorne admired the amount of hate that these stranded marines harboured and fed their hate by sending his own followers against them, making the weaker minded marines slaves to bloody warfare and slaughter. Nurgle constantly explained to the marines about how what they were willing to die for was absolutely foolish and convinced them that he could teach them everything to know about death, he even convinced some that the emperor himself was but another slave of the god of decay. The bonds were set, the chaos gods Khorne and Nurgle had completely corrupted the marines, even Hayden and Tarle were tainted to the core. Ironically, these dark angels became the very thing their chapter vowed to hunt. These however were not like The Fallen. These traitor angels were something far different.

About 500 years of corruption and warfare passed and the renegade marines had given themselves a new identity. Their hatred for the imperium had grown so great, that they vowed to destroy any living thing that even spoke of it with a shred of pride. Thus the former Dark Angels took on a different name, they had become the Death Bringers, the squelchers of life. Much had changed in the new chapter. Kothgren had somehow managed to become more tainted then it had ever been and the chapter was thriving on it. Old members of the Death Bringers died in time, but gradually, they were gaining more and more traitor marines to fall under their banner. The chapter had also resorted to their old foe as allies; Daemons were commonly used in their battles. What started as the corruption of a small battleforce was amassing to a sizable army. Hushed words and whispers have told that the new traitor chapter was nearing half the size of an imperial legion.

As for Hayden and Tarle, they had undergone great changes. Tarles name was no longer remembered for he had ascended to the greatest honour with an even greater speed. Nurgle had taken a great liking to Tarle and gave him the gift of daemonhood, thus making Tarle one of the quickest ascending chaos lords in history. No one knew his daemonic name, but most refered to the newborn daemon prince as Sinpox the Vile. News of this had reached the Dark Angels right away, making them even more paranoid of inquisitorial discovery for a daemon prince would attract even more attention. Hayden had not undergone an ascention, but really, no one feared him any less. The changes to Haydens physical form were hidden by his corrupt terminator armour, but not by his voice. Hayden hardly spoke anymore, but when he did, it sent shudders down even the most emotionless traitor marine. Haydens voice was like a harsh whisper that crackled like fire, but most of his words were expressed through the bloody slaughter that he conducted. Hayden had gained the respect and admiration of Khorne. Khorne rewarded Hayden not with the ascention of daemonhood, but instead a great relic of Khorne. The great axe was known as the Bone Cleaver, a weapon infused not only with the bloodlust of Khorne, but also his desire for skulls. After a time of weilding this weapon, he became known simply as the Charnel Lord.

After this amount of further corruption, word of the Death Bringers reached the ears of the Dark Angels and all three subsidary chapters beneath them. It was a great stain on their pride knowing that so many more of their brothers had fallen so far, yet, they had not been able to deal with the problem already being busy with the origional traitors of their legion. Along with the Fallen Angels, the combined heresy of the two chapters is what makes the Dark Angels and the chapters beneath them mysteriously refer to themselves as the “Unforgiven”. Though origionally smaller than the Fallen, the Death Bringers were growing ever so larger and word of them reached out to the imperium soon enough. The Dark Angels were even more determined to get rid of the traitors for now two sizable enemies threatened the discovery of their chapter. Thus the Dark Angels vowed to destroy both chapters with the same behaviour that corrupted them so in the past. They treated their hunt with the utmost amount of vengeance and hate.

As a last note, I want to point out a few things:
-This isnt meant to be a real story, I completely made this up.

-I do realise that there is no such thing as the “Bone Cleaver” but dont worry, I'm not giving it any special stats or anything, it will simply be counted as a daemon weapon of khorne.

-On the note of the Bone Cleaver, if anyone could suggest a better name for the weapon with something to do with bones, it would be appretiated.

-Neither of my characters are modified in any way, they are simply a Daemon Prince of nurgle and a Chaos Lord of khorne. (asides from upgrades)

-I know that the Dark Angels codex would have said more about my army as well if this was true, but this is just for the sake of giving my army an awesome background.

-Lastly, I've already collected about half of my army, including my Hqs and i have painted all of them with this paint scheme. I think it looks good so i dont want to change it, but i would also like to stick with the Dark Angels traitor idea, so if there are any flaws in my history or in the overall concept of my army, tell me, and ill try to work around them instead. (no i will not paint my terminators with the deathwing paint scheme)

Thanks for reading, any commentary or advise is appreciated.

very interesting, you did take a few liberties with GW canon;

-Khorne doesn't favor anyone with less followers and destructive capacity than Abbadon
-The "Bone Cleaver" wouldn't have Khorne's essence in it. Maybe a daemon lord.
-The Dark Angels (and all of their successors) refer to themselves as the Unforgiven because half of their legion turned to Chaos, and since then the Unforgiven have been hunting the Fallen to try and eradicate them before the Inquisition finds out.
-The Eye of Terror's creation marked the start of the Emperor's Great Crusade, centuries before the Horus Heresy. The Eldar (who are all psychically significant enough to leave a small imprint on the Warp when they die and are reincarnated) society had devolved into a hedonistic and murderous one, and eventually the imprints they were leaving in the warp coalesced into Slaanesh, who's birth created the Eye of Terror, killed every Eldar within it (the Eye used to be the Eldar empire...so not all of the crazy buildings/planets in there are due to Chaos) and paining every Eldar in existence, such as the Exodites and Craftworlds that had fled long-ago. Many more craftworlds were drawn in later. This is also the cause of the Eldar wearing spirit stones, since they don't want to feed Slaanesh any more Eldar souls.

Just like to add a point to Rafis' ones. Medrengard is infact the Demon World ruled by the Iron Warriors and their Primarch Perturabo. I would strongly suggest changing the homeworld of your guys to another unknown planet not rulled by one of the major chaos legions.

Medrengard is a daemon planet belonging to the Iron Warriors CSM legion. It's ruled over by the Daemon Primarch Perturabo. Its describe as being a vast fortress factory were the slaves of the Iron Warriors toil for their astartes masters. The Iron Warriors themselves are said to live above the planet in their ships.

Its not impossible for your CSM to live on Medrengard however they would need to pay homage to the Daemon Primarch that rules there. I wouldn't recommend it as it seems like you would have to vastly change you fluff.

is their a particular reason you choose Dark Angels Green with Gold trim for your Chapter colors? I ask because Angels of Vengeance have retained the black armor from the original Dark Angels Legion.

Do you have any pictures of your army?

Okay, ive made some changes to my fluff:

my army is now just a branch off of the traitors of the dark angels (they turned after the Fallen Angels did). The Angels of Vengeance dont have much to do with it any more.

the bone cleaver does not have the essence of khorne in it.

I fixed the problem with the eye of terror/horus heresy. I pretty much just chopped off the part where the eye of terror was new and set the history a little after the horus heresy.

Just a few things to point out:

My army is DAgreen and gold because i liked the black legion trim, but i already had a marine army that was black. I was thinking about turning my marine army into dark angels but decided to sell them to fuel my chaos. I decided to mix the trim from the BL and the base color from the DA and i think it looks pretty good. (not to mention that green and gold is the color of the edmonton eskimos, Woot!)

Im not gunna change my home planet just yet. I would however, like to know if there are any online maps i can check rather than in the rulebook. It seems like the rulebook maps have all of the important planets. If anyone could suggest any either that would be a great help.

Lastly, I would put up some pictures but the camera Im stuck with right now sucks at taking close up pictures for such small things.

I found a dead planet called Belis Corona. Its around Cadia and the Eye of Terror.

Can anyone tell me if this is used in something else?

A really good map can be found here (http://www.scholaprogenium.com/40kmap.jpg). I know Belis Corona was mentioned during the 13th Black Crusade campaign but not sure what (if any) part it played or if it was just an off-hand mention. As far as I can remember it had no real significance so it should be cool to use.

Wow was the Eldar empire small relative to the Imperium. Maybe they had gotten lazy about their Maiden Worlds.

Also, what are the Exodite worlds doing a) in a cluster, not spread out across the Imperium and b) across the galaxy from the old Eldar Empire. What are they, Puritans? (Oh wait, yes they are.)

Ulthwe should be practically on top of the Cadian Gate. It's why they're so psychic, so morbid, and so often involved.

Il-Kaithe shouldn't be anywhere NEAR Cadia. At all. In fact, the Imperium only knows vaguely (like, integer percentages of the galaxy) where Ulthwe is as far as I know. The others Craftworlds' locations were GW secrets. Here, they are all lined up nice and pretty.

If we are putting in maps, I have one that is admittedly slightly less detailed, but more consistent with the basic canon/codicies;

I retract my last post, the map is actually very average. I've found at least two planets that are shown twice and also (strangly) Prospero, even though it was destroyed during the heresy. Plus Tallarn seems to be placxed directly over a warpstorm of considerable size. Hmmm...

Well so far Belis Corona seems to be my best bet, literally having no life on it whatsoever. The only problem i can see with it is that it is east of the eye of terror. If anyone can find a planet inside or a little bit west/north of the eye of terror that has no story to it that would be appreciated (as well as any info on Belis Corona).

Your best bet in this situation is to make your own world up and just place it in the Eye. Thats the beauty about having an entire galaxy as the setting for this game, there are literally billions of planets that could be in there and only a very small amount of them have been named so far. This is even discounting the massive spacial distortion within the Eye itself, allowing for who-knows how many more worlds.

No one is gonna dispute you making up a world and placing it wherever you want, especially within the eye.

Sounds good, Belis Corona didnt really sound like a chaos planet anyways.

Marius the Possessed

Definately do NOT choose Belis Corona. Why? Because its the main naval base for the Cadia sector. So it has tons of munitions, tons of defences, a big honking Navy fleet, and with regards to the entire Navy battlefleet in the Segmentum Obscurus, is second only to the Cypra Mundi base.

So unless your Chapter has somehow used one of the Imperium's most secure and powerful naval bases as a homeport without being detected for nigh on ten millennia...you might want to make another choice.

One thing you might try is the Caliban system. If your traitor Marines are some of the original Dark Angels, why not have them hiding in the vast asteroid field that used to be their home planet? Since the Rock (the DA's flying Fortress Monastery) flies around the galaxy and doesn't stay at Caliban any more, why not? Sure there might be some DA ships visiting on pilgrimmages, but have your guys just avoid them. Plus Caliban is close to the Eye already.
