View Full Version : Must show which units in what vehicle?

Just wondering.
If I deploy a vehicle at the start of the game that contains a unit, must I
1. Show all units' in vehicles and/or in reserves to my opponent (or leave them in the box)
Obviously I could mark this down and show upon revealing so as to be fair.
2. Declare which unit is in which vehicle (after all, how would the enemy commander know?)

In a friendly game:
I let them see my army list, shows which units are in A vehicle
then I mark down away from his eyes which unit is in each.
He wont know till he either cracks them open or I disembark

In a tourney:
Follow what the rules say

I typically have it written down in my army list, so that when I take the unit out of my transports/reserve, I can show my opponent that I'm not pulling his leg; I think that is the most fair way to go about it.

*fairest?* Heh heh heh. Rabbit strikes again :P

If you want to play by the rules, #2 (see pg 92, A Note on Secrecy). But players are free to do whatever they'd like if they both agree.

I always show the roster to the opponent prior to the game, but only because I want to see his list, so it’s only fair to reciprocate.

So it becomes a memory game of show once – forget many, and I see players ruminating during a game “Now what was in that Rhino since it’s now turn 3?”

heh, good point. I certainly wouldn't mind knowing if he has a calidus assassin!
I do like the idea of deception, forcing him/her to adjust in fear of my 'empty' falcon or wave serpent. (could it have fire dragons, or wraithguard, or banshees, or fuzzy bunnies of death!)

Mine is probably way too obvious to an opponent. All my black legion troops go in black rhinos and the bezerkers go in red rhinos with Khorne symbols on them. Probably a bit of a give away.

Tru enough but you could have the black legion hitching a ride in khorne rhinos = )

General rule for me for this is full disclosure ( I think the brb also states this is the norm ). When I set up I make sure my opponent knows what is in each transport and what I have in reserve. During the game if they ask I will let them know what is in a transport and if there is continued confusion I will mark them with a dice or a model. I expect the same basic things in return. If someone wants to play secretly that is fine but make sure to tell me that before I start handing out my list, and telling you what is in what.

I like to win the game based on better tactics or better dice. Winning because I fooled you into thinking a transport held my council instead of some storm guardians just doesn't seem like that great of a win.

In a tournament I will often print out extra lists for the people that I am going to play. Mainly so they can have something to take home with them and study why they lost... nah seriously I enjoy ending up wiht a few lists at the end of a day. Makes it easy to remember what happened if anyone asks and the easiest way to get that ball rolling is to do it yourself.
The other thing about the list is I run a Dark Eldar force an most people don't know what things look like (even dark eldar players have no idea what a horrorfex looks like) so having it on the list helps other people, and stops them giving me the "Your shifty" eye.

However in the case of transports I play by the BRB. I don't tell people, i wait for them to ask and then happily disclose what I have in each one.

I'll gladly show my opponent my list at any time before during or after the game, but I'll only volunteer what's in my transports if you ask specifically. Most people don't bother, because it's generally pretty obvious what transport goes with which squad. Unfortunately this doesn't apply to my Alpha Legion army, where squad 3 often rides in rhino 1. Or where I just do it randomly to screw with everyone's plans.

Actually it looks much like a squeedlyspooch.

And yet on page 92 BRB it tells you to show and tell ‘after’ the game and only makes a mention ‘before’ the game as to what is embarked in a transport.

The rest is done in agreement.

I understand that your commanders shouldnt know what is in your opponents vehicles prior to them comming out, but for the sake of argument what about open topped vehicles you should be able to see right in there.

I feel that open topped should be obvious. But I realised that this 'disclosure' would have to include deep strike too. Though one could argue that the 'just off board' units could be seen or known by the enemy commanders, and even that inbound drop pods would be on radar (after all, they would have to have been launched well before turn 1 to arrive during the span of a single battle).
All in all here's what I prefer:
Tournament: disclosure of what units are in transports (though not which specific transports) and which are deep striking, so that I can see the entire force first.

Friendly game: no discloser. This makes things a lot of fun and uses real life deception tactics to the fullest. Better for Marines in drop pods, as I'll always be wondering, is that Land Raider full or do I need to plan on deep striking termies in my rear flank?!

Either way, I do require that each unit be assigned to a specific vehicle and that it be written down. No decidinf that that rhino is empty when my fire prisms move around for a shot!
