Hello,
I've played fantasy for years and have finally turned to 40k. I wanted an evil army that had great models as well as a low model count and CSM fit the bill.
I have a couple of quick questions before I start going through the codex(which i just picked up today!) to try making a rough army list.
1) What are the best options for HQ? I love the look of Lords in Terminator armour but is it a good Idea to put your lord with a Termie squad?
2) Are ther any must haves in the Chaos list?
Also if there are any tips anyone would want to pass along to abrand new 40k/Chaos player?
Thanks and sorry for the noob questions!

The general consensus on the best HQ is the Daemon Prince, add a mark of Slaanesh, wings, and Lash of Submission. If you are more into fluff than competition then go with the lord.

I don't know who would argue with me but I think a defiler is a must have if your list starts growing over 1000 points. also invest in as many rhinos your troops can take I think, it saves them unneseccary armour saves and gets them around much quicker to spray their plamsa guns and what-have-you.
And then a deamon prince, if for nothing else then simply for his immunity to instant death and flying-lash-casting-close-combat-winning glory.

i agree whit both the state ments above. the lash Daemon prince is something that most lists uses, i my self never uses the lash dp as, i dont like either mark of slaanesh or the lash. i would say that some oblitirators is a must, they do perfect for their low point cost and is one of our best AT weapons.

Hi There,
first of all welcom to 40k and chaos.
In answer to your question
For HQ the in genral the best option is a Deamon Prince.
You can take DP with Wings and
- MoS with Lash of submission
- Warptime (with or without a mark)
- MoK
Other Must haves
- Obliterarors
- A pair of defilers (replace both weapons with CC-Arms)(great with a Lash Prince)
- space marines, space marines (Normal, Plague or Khorne) with Rhino's, melta, p.fist
or maybe Noise Marines (Rhino not neccesary)
Thousand sons or less optional with the new cover saves.
Terminators can be included either
a smal unit 3/5 with combi weapons, 1 chainfist (maybe one heavy flamer) and no champions for deepstrike use
or
large unit with terminator lord in Landraider for landraider rush.
There are also a lot of choices wich are never played in tourney lists. They are only played in personal or fluf lists.

Thanks for the advice everyone!
I would preferably use a Lord in my army with either terminators or raptors. I could even put him with bezerkers. What would you feel is the best option? Or if that won't work I guess I can always take a DP.
Also, seeing as 1500pts seems to be standard in 40k how many hq choices should I take?

The lord isn't worth it's points value. A DP is for chaos the best HQ choice.
If you want to use a lord you have a couple of options.
In terminator armour you can use him with a terminator squad in a landraider.
Putting him in a raptor squad is also possible but raptors are a bit to expensive.
Berzerkers don't need him, they are fine by therselfs.
Al in al a DP is the best choice and a lord is a flavor choice

my favorite lord build is terminator armour with the mark of khorne and the bloodfeeder daemon weapon. its a huge gamble to use, but when it doesn't let you down, he can wipe out an entire squad in one round of combat.

I lov the Bloodfeeder. but let me warn you, if you dont have lucky rolls then it is nothing, i would actualy advise against using Bloodfeeder and instead use a lord in terminator armour, mark of khorn and pair of lightning claws, this is a killer lord, if you want you could go the 4 lightning claw terminatos whit mark of khorn in a land raider. it is exspensive fot the terminators, but if you put the lord in then you will kill most enemies.

Aside from the prince, we actually do have some very respectable HQs. It's just that the prince outclasses anything else in its FO slot. That said, Kharn is just as deadly to infantry and only slightly worse off against vehicles. He's even solid against walkers, although it can be a bit of a gamble, since he falls victim to S8+ weapons. AND, against MEQ infantry, Kharn produces as many statistical kills as Abby. He's that good.
When it comes to Lords, point-for-point, twin claws yields the more MEQ kills than any Lord kitted with a daemon weapon. However, when it comes to close combat, believe it or not, a Sorcerer with warp time trumps all possible Lord configurations, regardless of cost. Just something to think about.

Well I had a mortal hq in mind when I decide to start the army and I think that I will stick with that. So I will go with the Sorcerer(thanks rabbit!) and winds of change. Now what kind of unit should I put him in? Would he be most effective with 4 terminators and a land raider or should he be with five terminators and deep strike? Any other suggestions?
I really appreciate all of the advice so far!

land raider definitly its big hard to kill(which makes it easier for you rhinos and other units to close without taking too much fire) and has a great amount of firepower to boot!
HOWEVER
its big and hard to kill and will quite often atract a bucket of attention and good potentionally go up in smoke early leaving the termis stranded. my advice is to use something that splits you oponents fire(defilers or another land raider work well) or something to take out whats trying to kill your raider(obliterators and havocs with mls do well at this).
also with the sorceror the best power point for point is warptime so jsut keep that one in mind.
hope that helps a little
