The title says it all. For example the old whirlwind could be a whirlwind or a vindicator do to its heavier rockets.

I just think old models add variety to your armies.
For Example, my Necron army is Half of the Old metal Cyborgs, and half of the new plastics. It helps with squad differentiation and adds a lot of variety to the bland 'We are Legion' kind of deal the Necrons have.
Plus, I could always claim that my old Wheelchair Destroyers are Counting as Heavy Destroyers - and my Plastic Destroyers are simply regular ones.

Just re-use the models as anything WYSIWYG. I use old WHFB Lizardman models for my 40k lesser daemons. They work fine that way, especially since there aren't any official lesser daemon models.

I agree with the others, that older models should be kept in their army, with as much attention paid to WYSIWYG as possible.
The only trouble is older 40k vehicles. Due to size changes, my late-model Rhino Chassis always raise eyebrows, because they're about half the surface area of a modern Rhino. It bothers people that my Rhino's can go down side-streets in CityFight games that their newer tanks can't get through.
If models no longer fit in your army because they've been pulled (not aware of any of these, except squats) then you might have to convert them, start a new army around them, or use them as a display.

I still have all my models in armies. No one gets left behind!
Old Rhino and Vindicator see battle most times.
I have decade old marines (from 3rd Edition) Terminators from Space hulk (2nd Edition)
Sometimes use 2nd Edition Rune Priest as a Librarian.
I use 2nd Edition Hive Tyrant (as a broodlord), have 2nd Edition gaunts, Zoanthrope and Biovore that sometimes see use.

Hi all.
If you can no longer use youre minatures with 40k , for whateve rerason.
Use them in other games , (freewargamesrules has some great free games to down load.)
Or you can use them to make scenery/objetive markers etc.
Do NOT throw them away!

I can't see any reason there should be models you can't use in 40k, except maybe Squats.
And nobody ever owned any of those, so it shouldn't be a problem :D

I have a squat! He has a plasma gun and goes in my IG's CCS.

I have about a dozen of the old type Rhinos and tank variations and would never throw them out, but they look lame compared to the new models. Fortunately, old space marines mix quite well with the new multipart kits.
I never had the old metal Land speeder, but its not a patch on the current plastic one, same with the land Raider and its variants.
I suppose my old models are waiting to be shipped to the 40k equivalent of the Imperial war museum.

Like others have said just use them. Imperials are easy, they have slotted their re release schedule into their fluff, with all the old models like rapier laser destroyers and imperial jetbikes representing heresy era units and and tanks based on old rhinos being early marks, imperial armour books are very good at explaining that. Even when their are no rules you can easily do a counts as, I've seen quite a few rapiers used as IG heavy weapon teams.
I even went as far as buying the armour through the ages box set to be my sternguard, veterans after all get all the old armour.
Same goes for other races, GW are quite good at including options for old models in their codexs even when they no longer make them, like the lascannon/plasma guns razorback. Some models don't look as good, my old mk2 pred looks a bit small and wimpy so doesn't see the field too often, but every now and again, especially in apoc games when everything comes it he does.
Old is good, variety is good. I look forward to seeing people armies with lots of classic miniatures in far more than identikit plastic space marie armies that are 10 a penny.

I agree with the others about not getting rid of your older modals. The hobby is expentive enough. I just aquired 4 old rhinos, 1 vindicare, 1 whirlwind and 1 predator for a cheap price so are getting looted by my orks. I also have a box full of 3rd edtion? goff orks and grots. I wouldnt use them unless i am running low on orks or grots.

I agree with all the above comments, old is good in my book. Even the Sqauts if your clever and can think of a good 'counts as' army.
The only problem i might have is the very old cardboard dreadnoughts the orks usedto get in the 3rd editon boxset. But that was not a real model so i guess that does not count.

Heck, some of the old models look great to this day. Just have a look at those old metal Aspect Warriors or Chaos space marines from 2nd ed. This 2nd ed. Dire Avenger Exarch (http://coolminiornot.com/pics/pics11/img45a6ae5ca8773.jpg) (painted by our very own Zentradi :)) is one of my favourite GW models of all time and still kicks the butt of the latest versions.

I agree with Da Mighty Camel. Pretty much all of the old Aspect Warriors still look great.
