What do you all think of the Army Transport casee? It seems really pricey at 57 bucks, is it worth it? Anywhere cheap i can get it? Also its odd that it comes with the 2.5in foam inserts since I heard that you need 3in inserts to fit tanks. Are their any other cases out there that are good, since the GW one is worse?

I hate ALL of the foam cases. They never fit just right and they waste a lot of space. Not only that but true to GW form, they charge an arm and a leg for FOAM. It's FOAM for heavens sake. You can buy it at the store for pennies and they want 60 bucks for it. Screw that.

If you don't mind doing a little bit of extra work, then you should look at making your army magnetic.

I buy strips of magnetic tape at Wal Mart that cames in 1" wide by like 20' rolls. 1" is the same width of the normal bases. Just cut them up, stick them to your model and trim off the excess.

Next, all you have to do is go buy a 20 dollar ALL STEEL (<--- metal is important here) and put your models in it. I store my 5000 point Imperial Guard army, among others, in metal tool boxes just like this and I've never had a problem at all.

I absofreakinglutely guarantee you that I can fit three times as many models in one toolbox than anyone else could fit in a 60 dollar foam piece of crap.

haha Hourglass has a good idea there. I can imagine seeing troops sticking to the sides of a metal box.

I snatched a sturdy aluminum case with foam inserts at Canadian Tire for less than half of the GW case's price. The one I bought is larger than the GW box, but still has a tough time holding all of my Tau, as Devilfishes and Hammerheads take up a lot of space. Hourglass has a brilliant idea there. I'm probably going to give it a try myself.

I got "4 words for ya man, "toolbox and toilet paper" and the most it will cost ya for a toolbox is $50 if you want a really good/huge one (average one would cost ya from $10 to $35). The toilet paper keeps your army safe and sound, and you can use peices from a cardboard box to divide it into sections of you want to.

I keep my 2000 point Nid army in it and I've droped the toolbox a couple times and nothing happened.

Take my advice if you want to spend more of your cash on models than a friggin box.

Well, I'm a rich ***** so I splashed out on a Skirmish pack, and it rocks. But i guess toilet paper and a tool box will work just as well...

The army transport cases are great. You can order whatever combination of foam trays you want up to 4" thick. The War Store is a good place to order them.

But you can make very nice cases for very cheap. Best of all they can be made to almost any size, carry any miniature, and are very inexpensive. The box below cost about US$10 to make. It would be even less if you used a cheaper, or free, box. The boxes can be anything you like. They come in a nearly infinite variety of colors and sizes. My Undead army is in a black one.

Using some foam-core board* I made a bottom tray with compartments for the various sized miniatures I planned to carry. The foam-core glued easily with a hot glue gun. You could probably use just about any type of glue. The edges were high enough to protect the miniatures from another tray I rested on top. I did not make all the walls full height, as it is much easier to pick out the miniatures when you can actually fit your hand into the compartments. On this box you can see only the two center walls are full height.

For individuals, I glued a layer of egg crate foam to a sheet of foam-core that rests on top of the compartment. Using the same concept, but putting soft foam on both sides of the trays, you can make a multiple tray box for carrying large infantry armies. I have one box that holds almost 500 troops. It cost about US$15 to make. Very inexpensive I think. Don’t forget to cut small indents on the side of the tray to make it easier to lift out.

* Foam-core is foam sandwiched between paper. It is usually carried as art board or picture mat, and is available in most picture, frame, and craft stores. You could probably go very cheap and use cardboard, but foam-core is more rigid and looks better.

I always take my army in my Asics shoe box. Because my shoe box brings all the gamers to GW, and they're like, "that's better than mine" damn right it's better than yours, I can sell you, but I have to charge. :D

I have seen some of the guys here use fishing reel cases. Yes they must cut the foam that come with the case but the one I saw is $15.00 dollars (US) and had 6 layers of foam.

This one would be great for storing troops. I am looking for a larger one for my vehicles, but have not found what I want yet.

I saw another player get a gun case and use it for his troops. Although I did not like the waffle foam that comes with the case. It was also $15.00 (US).

I have seen both of these cases at a sportings good store that sells fishing and hunting supplies.

So depending on where you are you might check a Sportings good store. I have a Bass Pro shop near where I live and they sell both items as well as a bunch of other stuff.

Might give this a try.

The Army Transport case from Sabol is very very nice. it has foam trays that you can customize easily, and very handy. it even has a little pouch for books/dice/whatever. They are expensive, but not much more so than the GW cases, but much much nicer

I use a GW case for troops, and then put all my vehicles and large models in a toolbox with those foam bits, works great.

Hourglass = my hero, mainly because he used 'abesofreakinlutly'(or something along those lines)

That sounds like a great idea too, lota good ones in this forum.

Its a shame that GW feels the need to charge 50 dollars for a plastic box and like 7 dollars for a foam sheet, and forces thier loyal gamers to find alternative ways of storing and transporting their armies. And hence make all the players run the risk of damaging their models that GW already raped up in the arse for moneywise in the first place <_< TYRANTS! :P

either way, i havent figured out how im going to store mine yet, i wanna get a tight looking steel case for them or something, maybe use foam, maybe ill try the magnets, although i duno how id store tanks. (Y)

yeah, GW is way too expensive, so i turned to trago mills!!! i got a tool box (£5) and a sheet of foam (£1.88), and that works fine for my 1500pts of 'nids including OOE and a hive tyrant, zoanthrope, biovores, raveners, 32 gaunts, 12 genesteallers and 6 spore mines!!! and this was the small model of the case, i can't even imagine how much i'll fit in the biggun!!!

I went to Cabela's and spent 14$ for a Doskosport four gun hand gun Case (http://doskosport.com/Catalog.plx?ID=48), It comes with 3 foam inserts, 2 X 2.5in eggshell and 1x2 in flat foam. I replaced one of my 3 in egg shells with 2 of the 2in flats that I cut to fit my models. What I did was cut the hole in the foam( all the way through) with a utility knife then glued (elmer's spray glue) the plasticboard (pastic cardboard) to the bottom. It's great it holds all 60 of my space marines with about 15 holes leftover, that includes 6 bikes and 10 termies and the lid (2.5 in piece) hold 3 rhinos and a Landraider. I imagine you could use any cut to fit foam and any backing you found. I am buying another one here shortly to put my DE in since I am now concentrating on them as my main army.

Dosko has like 30 dif types and you can spend as little as $15 like I did or $100's if you need something really fancy. Dosko also sells the insert for the cases at between 2.50 and 15.00 a piece again dpending on the case.

The website for doskosport is

I am making a correction my case, I boaught a second one today hold around 150 models total each. I only counted one of the foam inserts. Each insert holds approx 45 to 50 models. And you can get the cases for 14.99 at sports authority, I found that out today, which is why I bought one.

hehehe, i got big plans, biiig plans.

i just bought 200 super-thin neodymium wafer magnets.

i plan to attach them to all bases then use my old aussie 7.62x51 ammo crate with iron plates lining the inside, the magnets have about 1.5-2 lbs of pull, so thhele be pretty secure, even on the sides and roof of the case.

One BIG word of caution for those of you who want to put magnets on the bases of their soldiers:

Do NOT store them near any source of electromagnetic radiation. This means don't put them next to your computer tower with it's 400watt power supply or put them next to your amp in your trunk.

If you do this, then the magnets will depolarize and become useless. i.e. soldiers bouncing all around inside of a steel box. Not a good idea.

This is not from personal experience, but a friend of mine did strore his magnetic soldiers next to his thumping speakers in his trunk and his figures were a bit chipped up when he got to the store. :(

Wolf that reminds me of my case. Its a black case with red bins the you can move around and take out as needed. I used two to carry infantry, one to carry a sentinel and I took out the large box to carry me leman russ. Then I shoved foam in the top of the boxes to prevent breakage. Cost me 20$ at home depot.
