View Full Version : Why Is The Uk Gw Website So Outdated?

I recently visited the UK GW site for fun, and I noticed that they are still using the same layouts and formats that the US GW page abandonned a couple years ago. Why is this? Is it just 40k? I know this game originated in the UK, so I would think that it would be updated...

Actually they are getting updated in the near future and it all sounds very promising.

I have seen some pics of the layout and look of the new webpages and they seem alot more modern and space agey.

Just wait a while for all armies to be done and the GW site will be brand spanking new.

IMO the layout of the US site annoying and too reliant on flash. Flash doesnt leave me as many options as html pages, where at the very least I can save an image I like.

They wrote in a couple of weeks in the WD, so it will probably be launched in the next three months, but I would guess that they will post something about it on their site/WD when they have a more exact date.

The UK site is going to be redone in the near future.

(sorry web designer mode on here!!)

Draegath makes a good point about flash. Flash (and javascript) should only be used for navigation if you are going to provide a fallback so that users that dont have flash (or javascript) can still use naviagte the website.

The screen layouts I've seen look very nice but I have a feeling they will still be using table based layouts rather than css ones. Whilst this makes no difference at all to someone browsing the website, other than providing a faster loading page, it does make a difference to the amount of work required to keep a site running.

It will certainly be interesting for me to see what it looks like and and how it navigates and functions once it is launched.

I get the Inquisitorial newsletter from GW and they say at the end of January (around 2 weeks) the new layout will be up. There are a few screenshots on the website of it too.

I have no problem with the site itself, what I do have a problem with is the antiquated forum GW still uses! Posts, reposts, doubleposts, all posts in the same area.... Luckily I have LO to come to, but it would help immensely if GW bothered to udpate its forum software to something a bit more easier to use.

I completely agree with you, the GW boards are absolutely shocking to use. There isn't even any allowance for fonts, colours or smilies. During SoC they tried to say the boards were fine once you got used to them when people complained, but the fact that people complain should indicate to them how bad they are.

I saw an article in WD about the new UK gw site. My impression was that they were going to copy and paste the US site.. :(

For all who's wondering, this is where you can find the details.

GW Website (http://uk.games-workshop.com/news/uk/articles/web-screenshots/web-screenshots.htm)

It details their plan of action and shows screenshots of the new look. IMO this is a thing that's been needed for a long while, the current one is old, outdated and crappy. Compared to the other versions it's the worse, and that's from the HQ of the hobby!!

I welcome this new look with relish, I just hope they decide to do something with the forums. There was a thread a while ago stating they plan to do something about it, but need to look at how.
