View Full Version : Uk Price Increase King Ulrik Flamebeard January 15th, 2005, 14:17 Bugman Posted: Fri Jan 14, 2005 2:48 pm
Hello,
Confirmed are the 2005 price increases for the Uk. The price changes on the 4th of April, being a monday.
Basically all £15 regiment sets will rise to £18, whilst letters G, H and I will go up by £1, £2 and £3 respectively..
Now there is no explination for the letter rises, although i can guess why, but i will wait until i see the new plastics released.
GW's explination for the price rise is that they haven't risen/changed them since 2001. Now i can't remember if this is true or not, but i do know one thing, the box sets have indeed changed. I remember them coming out with a movement try and metal command figures, so they are no longer included. GW's words of "the models are better" is absolute tripe as well as i don't think they are.
Although shockingly, they do admit GW is an expensive hobby and that "if you wanted to get to A->B, which car would you use, a skoda or a porchse". The porche offers you comfort and speed but costs more".
If they had risen them by £1 each i could understand, but i believe GW is starting to price itself out of the market. There ARE better models and cheaper models (who wants a porchse anyway, its petrol rate is pathetic!)
But like the rest of you, i am guessing that we will continue to buy no matter what they push the prices too
Bugman
So they're increasing them, this info is from the Bugmans Brewery site. What's your thoughts?
IMO it sucks, we pay more for a less than credible reason. But then, will I stop buying them? No. I'm a sucker.
*Sticks owned by GW label on chest*
KU Ghazghkull thraka January 15th, 2005, 14:48 Whoa there expensive enough if you think about it, i think it sucks badly and there kinda taking advantage because its so widespread. strewart January 15th, 2005, 14:51 Does that mean prices in other countries will go up too? If the HQ ones are it would kinda make sense, but I hope they don't...
I agree with what Bugman said, they are pushing themselves out of the market. I think if the prices rise too much more I will stop buying more and just stick with what I have (which is plenty!). It is a pity to see them do this, the models can't be that expensive to make and surely they don't need to keep jacking the prices up. Toastee January 15th, 2005, 15:24 But the models are better. =o.o=
To say that they aren't is rubbish. But this doesn't mean that I feel that they should up the prices again. I am also thinking they are pushing them too far in areas.
I will still buy, but I think I'll probably be buying less this year. I want to try Confrontation anyway...sorry but anything with Werewolves in it, can't be that bad XD lol
Plus when you have other costly hobbies like Mountain biking and Paintball...lol
But to be fair, they were due an increase, so we all knew it was coming. Hard A** January 15th, 2005, 15:34 Personally, I have no problems with them increasing their prices occasionally. They are a business after all, and they want to survive. I have been into Games Workshop for nearly 15 years, I want to still have the option to be into it in another 15 years (quite apart from the shares I own in it) and I want them to have a working budget to be able to expand, employ talented designers and improve their ranges. For what they offer, I think they are still competitive.
ITS NOT A CHARITY, ITS A BUSINESS !!!! GET REAL!!! flippantremark January 15th, 2005, 15:55 I guess the bottom line is if you have the cash and are thinking of buying units then buy them now. Don't wait for GW to up the prices on you. Reabe January 15th, 2005, 16:58 Aww nuts! :realmad:
Personaly, this sucks. I want to collect and play this hobby, but the price change is going to make it difficult. But I guess in saying this people will say "Shut up and get a job" or "Stop moaning" or similar.
And the models haven't got better, really. I mean, Orcs and Goblins still have 5th edtion Boar Boyz. Dogs of War and Chaos Dwarves haven't got anything this edtion so far.
The only armies which has got better models as far as I can see are the Chaos ones, and if I'm going to have to pay upto £3 more for my models because of 12 year old power-gamers, then I'm selling my models and E-bay and *gulp* taking up War Machine, or what ever it's called. I bet hobbists there get some respect. Kaiser January 15th, 2005, 19:00 Great, they raise prices just after i start playing. Just my luck. :/ Phobos January 15th, 2005, 19:09 You own shares in the great satan? You sell out!

I guess we're in the same boat, then. Damn.
Well, I might not get harshly affected by this, because I only get models two or three times a year (The nearest warhammer store is a 40 minute drive to Metrotown, Burnaby... but it's got tons of stuff...)
Well, maybe the extra money will get GW some new models and stuff... that would be pretty cool. crontdiggery January 15th, 2005, 20:24 Originally posted by Sergeant Khalor@Jan 15 2005, 13:29

i'm also in that boat, i've only been playing for half a year, with a 1750 pts nid army, and my lost and damned army which i started today, and i'm not buying any more nids 'till the new ones are out in summer(after the price increase), but i suppose i can make the most of the current prices by buying as much for my lost and damned army as possible :D . Liono January 15th, 2005, 20:26 I am curious how much their costs have rose with the disaster is SE asia and rising oil prices. I believe most of their stores are franchises or independent retailers so they shouldn't have much overhead for realstate or wages. the_randomiser January 15th, 2005, 20:43 Let's try to get a grip people. Every time there is a price rise people get hysterical.
Did you get a pay rise this year? Well the GW designers want one too, and the people doing the shipping, and the store workers. So do the people supplying the raw materials. These have to be paid for. How can a company selling miniatures do this I wonder? Oh yes, they could increase the price of their products, the same as every retailer does.
I've been into GW for 12 years, and the prices don't go up every year. It stands to reason that now and again, the prices will go up.
I have already started a thread in general discussion about the value of GW products, which I happen to think is very good. It seems that people want the quality and support without being willing to pay for it. Welcome to the real world people. Eros January 15th, 2005, 21:14 prices have gone up over the years. in small ways, but thay have gone up. For Example - you could buy a pack of Eldar Aspect Warriors for £5 and get 3 models. Now for the same price you only get 2, im not sure exactly when that occured, but it did.
but saying that, i agree with the_randomiser prices do have to go up from time to time it is a componey like any other. Bloodlust January 15th, 2005, 22:36 Hmmmm..........Time to go on a spending spree and stock up before the prices go up. And personnaly I don't think the models are getting better anyway. Twilight Dancer January 16th, 2005, 01:00 woah 18 pounds? Man that's bad but i'm not going to cry, i'm not going to complain, i'm simply going to buy less if any models.
hit em where it hurts! :D yaaaay first post! idinos January 16th, 2005, 13:55 Yeah hit them where it hurts. Also, now that the buses got a price increase better walk to work. I also think that bread has gone up in price, so better starve to death! Oh and don't forget to refuse any pay increases that your job gives you either. Twilight Dancer January 16th, 2005, 14:52 how dare you insult my intellegence
and for your information! if the price of bread were to increase nationally by 20% that country would be in trouble
i'm not going to stop buying models out of spite, i'm going to stop buying models because i won't be able to afford to spend that much money on a luxuary item! King Ulrik Flamebeard January 16th, 2005, 15:41 Oi!! Keep this civil, this is about GW prices not the price of bread or bus rides. Keep on topic please.
KU WiCkEdRock January 16th, 2005, 16:36 £18?.. thought that was the common price :o Yes, here in sweden the boxes have been costing around £18 for a long while. And now it might get worse, oh joy.
I hope that wizard games will keep having the UK prices instead of the swedish prices, together with those loyalty bonuses. IC_Wiener January 16th, 2005, 19:31 Well, now you all know how we americans feel. It's like 35 bucks a box here so we dont need to do any complaining.

I just did a check using an online currency converter. Its ~£19.23 for a 250SEK box here in Sweden. Unless your store has lower prices than mine... where do you buy your stuff? Bobzilla January 16th, 2005, 20:24 Just been thinking about this. Back when I first started getting into warhammer and 40k (about 15 years ago I think) I could pick up a blister pack of 3 figures for £2.99. That soon went up to £3.99 and being a young kid I thought that was a huge increase and ended up only getting models in the sales. You could pick up a box of 10 metal IG for £7.99 and they werent that good really...in fact the current box of plastic cadians look far batter
15 years on I'm surprised the models dont actually cost far more than GW charge for them...even withthe increase WiCkEdRock January 16th, 2005, 23:46 I just did a check using an online currency converter. Ah yes, I just made a little guess, so it went a bit wrong.
Yeah, they cost 250SEK here at our retailers as well.
But I buy my minis for 214SEK/box. +5% off with the loyalty bonus. And another 5% off if I buy alot at once.
So 193,60SEK for each box if I use all the bonuses, 56,40SEK cheaper then usual! They have a long delivering time, but I can wait because of the money I "save".

Regiment boxes in Australia are $50, so you are still better off than us. That is 20 pounds or around $38 US. I sure hope we don't get another price rise any time soon, and I don't see why the same product should vary in prices in every country... Sure every place has different import taxes and stuff, but it is a fair difference and every country shouldn't be that different... Bobby_Wokkerfella January 17th, 2005, 14:08 Yeah, it suck having to pay $50 AU a box. Thats why I'm trading in all my MTG cards (Cept 1 deck) for ogres! Man, here in Norway we pay a bloody 275 NOK per box! And NOK are worth MORE than SEK. Damn youse! Or better yet, damn the retailer. idinos January 17th, 2005, 17:14 Originally posted by Shadows Coil@Jan 16 2005, 07:52

I wasn't trying to insult your ... intellegence (intelligence), I was being sarcastic. If GW products are a luxury item for you and you can't afford them, then by all means stop buying them. I doubt this will hurt GW at all though, as they do this thing called "market research" before they raise their prices, to make sure there won't be a backlash when they do so. Apparently, if the rumors are true about the price increase, GW is confident that there won't be one if and when they do so. Companies aren't run on whims.
EDIT: My condolences to my Scandinavian colleagues, you guys are trully getting the shaft and have every right to complain. Lurch January 17th, 2005, 19:41 If most other countries are paying around £18 per box already it just sounds like GW are harmonising the costs in the UK. It doesn't help though that they decide to hike the prices by 20% in one go, kind of over and above the rate of inflation.
Mercifully I have loads of models anyway and can get a decent discount by buying them from online traders. I don't imagine starting any new armies for a long time though. How about having some swedish relative/friend living near the norwegian border, ordering to their house and come pick it up? You'd earn like 100SEK per box compared to when you shop in Norway :P
It's not uncommon for norwegians to do that, they come to Sweden when they're gonna shop christmasfoods. Twilight Dancer January 19th, 2005, 03:20 Originally posted by idinos@Jan 17 2005, 17:14

i was simply pointing out that instead of all this petition nonsense we get every time they put their prices up people could simply not buy the models
the reason why Games Workshop can get away with a 20% increase is because for starters before the increase occurs people will buy more models
a few months maximum of gamer whining followed by the majority of gamers buying the more expensive boxed sets
it's quite brilliant really :) but alas i lack the money so that's the last i'll say on the genius that is Games Workshop's price increases | |
