View Full Version : That Army Builder Thingger noctus101 January 28th, 2005, 02:12 I didnt know where else to put it, but is the armies of the imperium a good cd to buy? I found an amazing army builder on teh net, but im uncomfortable buying of the net. I remembered that Gw sold something like that but I didnt know if t was any good.
Has is got a simple , clear layout?
does it display the stats of the character/unit?
does it include summaries to wargear?
does it print friendly?
Any help would be very much appreciated! RJSuperfreaky January 28th, 2005, 02:33 ArmyBuilder is farbetter than what GW puts together. I went to my gaming store to buy the GW product, and my friend who worked there told me not to waste my money. He recomended ArmyBuilder, by Lone Wolf software. Get it online here
Army Builder (http://www.armybuilder.com)
The best part about ArmyBuilder is that once you buy the software, the same program can be upgraded, FOR FREE, with virtually ANY game system (GW or not) from their website. Furthermore, they update the site daily, so when new codexes come out, the changes are made usually within a few weeks! For example, ArmyBuilder already has a file online for a ton of WH40K armies under the 4th ed rules, including the new SM codex. I have used 2.2 and now 3.0 for the past year, and have NEVER regretted my purchase.
I could spend hours talking about all of the great features, but I'd sound like some bad infomercial. Just visit the site, and let them convince you.
And no, I don't work for them. noctus101 January 28th, 2005, 03:00 ya i have the free trail of that and I thought it was amazing. Is it worth the money though, thats what I was asking. I might save up and get it. Is it safe to buy it over the net? well thanks for the help. Liono January 28th, 2005, 05:12 Most hobby stores carry or can get Army Builder for you so you dont need to buy it off the net. Gathrog January 28th, 2005, 08:10 army builder is a waste of time in general, plus people like to use it as a second rule book. I can't count how many people use "well on army builder........" as a reasonable defence for thier 5 heavy support options. Be a real man and use paper and pencil. That way you save ink, time, can change your list easilly AND use your brain alittle bit more (Y) Kaiser January 28th, 2005, 09:04 I myself prefer using pen and paper to make my armylists, but armybuilder is still a conveinent tool. Let me guess- you also eschew a calculator in favor of an abacus.
Actually, you can change your list more easily on army builder, and it's better for the environment, since you make no waste paper :P
You are right, however, in that Army Builder is just a tool. You still need to practice common sense when using it. As they say, " A fool with a tool is still a fool" Pip January 28th, 2005, 15:32 Originally posted by RJSuperfreaky@Jan 28 2005, 23:05

Yeah I agree with you that Army Builder is such a better environment to build your army list. You can easily add/remove wargear off your units and the points are calculated accurately and fast.
You don't know how much time I spent on pen and paper, referencing with the codex, flipping back and forth through the book till it got dog ears. Then usually the paper that I use usually ends up as if a chicken went and clawed through it. 0_o kinda sad really. (probably its due to me not memorizing the stuff in my codex) isitused January 28th, 2005, 17:30 Be a real man and use paper and pencil. Save ink maybe,
Save time? Are you mad? Army builder makes building a force soooooo much faster, and the list it prints is very nice. Having the stats printed along side the point’s makes checking stats during the game much faster then thumbing threw the codex.
You think you can’t change your list on army builder?! I don’t know how many times I've swapped guns on a character or unit mid list. If I was doing it free hand I'd either have a massive smudge mark where I erased the same weapon over and over, or have a list of "X"ed out items that I had to sacrifice for a few extra points. Army builder is just a few simple clicks and your force is changed, with no mess. :)
As far as using your brain, I find using army builder allows me to concentrate more on battlefield/deployment tactics.

i can give u the demo of it if u like Grimjack January 28th, 2005, 18:58 I like Army Builder but it has its limitations. I downloaded the 2.2 version a while ago and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Then I got the new SM codex and started checking my lists. Errors everywhere. After a few weeks of fighting with tweaking the DAT file I have most of the units fixed up. Army builder is great for the basic units but once you start adding traits and such it starts to be less effective and out comes the pencil. I love the AB print out's to look at for quick reference during a game but you must check your list against your codex for mistakes. Yacoby January 28th, 2005, 19:50 AB is very good for building lists fast but you need to check it off against the codex noctus101 January 28th, 2005, 20:32 it relly comes down to: Is it worth it? Is it worth paying 40 us. cuz im here in Canada so... Does anyone know if you can buy it in stores? Not anymore... ...AB v3 requires yearly payments to be kept up to date. :( RJSuperfreaky January 28th, 2005, 20:39 Originally posted by Grimjack@Jan 28 2005, 11:58

They now have 3.0 out. If you own 2.2 you can upgrade at a discount. The new version incorporates the new codex, and you can set whatever traits you want already. It also accounts for vet skills. It really is superb.
And yes, it is now a yearly fee. But considering that a box of tac marines is upwards of $30 ( and reportedly rising), the 20 bucks a year doesn't sound too bad. Pip January 28th, 2005, 21:21 Well actually its not that bad. Even all you lose is just being able to automatically update your data files, but you can still get them for free from the website itself. Just that you have to download and install them manually.
The Updates feature of Army Builder is only accessible with an active license, so the automatic location and retrieval of product updates and data files will become unavailable with an expired license. However, you can still obtain all data files FREE of charge via our website (there is a direct link to the appropriate webpage under the Help menu within the product). You can monitor the status of all updates on the website, download those you want, and import them directly into Army Builder. The only thing lost is the convenience of the integrated Updates mechanism.
check out their licensing faq:
Army Builder 3 License Support (http://www.wolflair.com/rightframe.php?context=army_builder&page=licensing_details)
Although you might have to pay them after every 2 year cause...its says that licenses that have expired for more then 2 years may be closed on their server...so... *shrug* If you really don't want to pay...well you could always *cough*crackit*cough* Grimjack January 28th, 2005, 22:13 Ya I tried the 3.0 version and the format was nicer but when I downloaded the dat file it was only gave you a few armies so far. Since I have already heavily modified the 2.2 version Space Marine dat file to match the new Codex I'm going to stay with 2.2. Also with the 3.0 I think its a pain if you want to put in on more than 1 computer. Ikarus January 28th, 2005, 22:53 I have both IALS, and was pissed that it was all outdated.
BUT GUESS WHAT.
its all updated patches now... sooo NEW SM codex is there too..
yay...
recommend getting it off ebay Gathrog January 28th, 2005, 22:56 well isitused when you play an army for a little bit you will start to memorize squads and learn the rules by heart. Plus the math i very simple and if you do need a calculator its ussally quick and easy. Then you have to print your army list for other to see and if you make a few corrections an erraser wont save you :( your going to have to print ANOTHER copy so it doesn't save paper it takes more. I have used army builder and after a couple of weeks just threw it away. Biggest waste of time ever and now they are chargeing a monthly fee?!!! I just burned it from a friend and it cost me nothing.....if i had payed for it i would have been really pissed. So to sum up here its not a bad program for people starting out or for people with more than 5 armies to keep track of but for most of us its just a waste. noctus101 January 28th, 2005, 23:24 unfortuently, i have no friend that has purchased it, so I cant burn it. :( So should I get it? Agate January 29th, 2005, 00:04 I also use army builder and i think it saves time.
as for getting a copy down load the free trial, and then add some "Personal touches" and you will wonder why everyone doens't just use the free trial Krig January 29th, 2005, 02:39 If it was $35 cheaper, then I may pay for it, but I wont pay such an inflated price for it. Grimjack January 31st, 2005, 18:12 Don't buy it. Just download the trial 2.2 version and use it. You can only make 500 pts at a time but you can still print it out. The new 3.0 trial version will not let you print. mustbleedthesm February 1st, 2005, 01:18 i downloaded the 40k update and can still only get stunties and crap like that BLADERUNNER February 1st, 2005, 05:33 If you enter in a tournament, GW will also judge your army list
included with your army, in one white dwarf a contestant had
made a codex out of a moldey tome (With real mold!)
I prefer using pen and doing the math in my head, I can keep
my math current and draw intriguing icons on white paper to
mark units and such. I'd rather do it on paper as i said.
You wont have to double check everything, just get the codex
white printing paper and a pen (calculator to check math) and
your set! Carnage February 1st, 2005, 13:09 if you were dishonest (not point fingers at myself) you could just download the hack. In all truthfulness though i didnt...but i know alot of people who have, and are glad they did...i 'wouldn't' recommend this obviously as its illegal | |
