View Full Version : Easiest To Learn? Wh Or Wh40k?

I'm sure people have thought about this before. I'm personally a wh40k player, dunno anything about WH though.

In your honest opinion, not wether either game is better, but what would you consider easier to learn? It took me a bit to learn WH40k, and I'm still learning tons. Now to me, it seems WH would be easier because its more melee based (I think?)

Now, this is open to all the people of Librarium Online to think/discuss about it!

Lets hear some opinions!

well warhammer 40k is easier to learn IF the warhammer 40k rulebook had something called order, or even an index!
warhammer makes much more sense, but has more rules. for one, it has an index, and is nicely layed out. warhammer 40k causes way to many arguements i think, but it is still fun.

40k is way more easier to learn in my opnion, fantasy has a lot more subtley to it with things like combat modifiers rank bonus magic etc.........
40k is simple to learn.

Warhammer has more complicated rules, but alot less weapons to keep track off.
Every race in forty kay has like 8 different weapons, gets hard to keep track :P

i agree fantasy is a much more fun game to play

Fantasy has more instances where you can only do something if you have done something else, such as declare charges then move charges, or move and shoot, but not get into combat, whereas 40K tends to allow more units to move shoot then assault, making for a more flowing and fast moving game. however, large armies in 40K are tedious when you have to move huge amounts of models one at a time, whereas fantasy, despite having more models, is easier to move because most people use movement trays and small numbers of skirmishers

With out a doubt 40k is much easier to play and understand than Fantasy. I've learned them both in the last year and while I haven't mastered either one I usually I am a long way off for fantasy compared to 40K.

I too would have to agree that fantasy is harder to learn each unit has its own movement length, rules about how your regiments can turn and move, save modifiers. After awhile it gets up there, wouldnt be as good if it were simple though.

Fantasy is harder to learn, but more gratifying to play for me.

40K is definitely easier to learn. The system is much better designed for fast learning, as Warhammer tends to get bogged down in magic phases and all sorts of craaazy modifiers. :P

this is an interesting thread, because in the old days 40K was more time consuming with rules for everything!

Yeah, it's strange how 40K became a much more streamlined system in 3 editions whereas WH is still, at least compared to 3rd/4th edition 40K, very complex after twice that many. :P

I think that the differences in ease of learning are the fact that 40K is designed as a game of skirmishes, whereas WH is designed for small-scale battles proper.

I think that the types of players who veer towards whfb are older gamers while the younger gamers tend towards 40k, and that this has an effect on how complex the rules are

I'd agree with that - but I'd modify it, the players don't veer towards the type of games, the games veer towards the type of players.

40k has been simplified over and over again to try to entice younger players that it is easy to get into.

40k is a much easier to learn, I think we all can agree on that.
(though don't bring up which one is more fun to play or not, because that is off topic)

um... have you even read the 40k rulebook?
Like on page 3 there is CONTENTS... omg look! >.<
Also in the back of the codex, before the credits you have an Index aswell!

Yeah, fantasy is the one without an index and when you want rules you sometimes don't know whether it is going to be in the shooting or combat section.

The 4th edition 40k book is now set out fairly well with index and everything, and 40k is far simpler and easier to learn. There are not as many modifiers, in 40k you just shoot no matter whats going on then save unless ap cuts you down. In fantasy you have lots of shooting modifiers and armour saves are modified, combat is more complex to work out and there is the dimension of magic, which is far more than the little psychic powers.

Defintly 40K, somtimes it is too simple, but it was very easy to get the hang of the rules

Strangely enough I'm finding Warhammer a helluva lot easier.I guess it's just the way it's explained in the rule book,I mean it basicly takes your hand and walks you through each step very clearly. Then again it may just because we haven't played any games using magic yet..iono.

warhammer is much more complicated. magic=psychic powers but with 10 pages of rules instead of a paragraph. 9 (i think ) different psychology rules. combat modifiers. save modifiers. to hit modifiers. this that lalalalla etcetcetc.

there is no comparison. warhammer is increadibly difficult to learn. 40K is ahrd, but a cinch comparativley.

now, LOTR on the other hand......

u can learn in 10 mins tops

Though if you play a game against a "good" player with magic, then you should know atleast the basics. ^_^

Naaaw, 40k is easy, I learned to play if after the 2nd game.

It took us like a week. :glare:

I think once you learn one it must make it easier to learn the other. I started 40k a long time ago and it took me a while to get the hang of it, now that we're finnaly breaking into Fantasy, I'm having a much easier time learning then I did learning 40k.
