The Mega Paint Set is far more than a normal paint set it contains all the paint colours from the current Citadel colours range. It also includes brushes, glue, flock and a painting guide. This is the ultimate paint set for the serious hobbyist.

I can get this for £110 (http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99179999004&orignav=300810)

I know the probably belongs in the "Painting Forum" but i need a quick answer,
would you consider me "The serious hobbyist" i have 1500-2000 pts space marines and 2200 pts unpainted tyranids, and about 400-500 pts unpainted orks+ bits of most other amires(single boxed sets only).
Do you guys at LO think this justifies getting the mega pain set.

I hope it does.

*blinks*
2200 pts of unpainted nids?

well, that paint set is quite good, though many colour you will not use...
then again if you in the future do use the colours you normaly don't use,
you'll propebly find them dried and you need to buy more.

*Sigh* 2200 pts of nids... now that is just lazy (no offending purpose)

//Cheers

Considering you have a *&^% load of stuff to paint, get it. I went through a load of normal paint sets and individual paints to get through my 5000 points of SM.

Well, do the math. The Paint set gives you all of the Citadel paints for (sorry, converting this to my native Canadian $ - the money difference is relative though) $270. That's 64 paints, if I'm not mistaken, plus the extras. I'm not going to consider the brushes, glue, flock, and painting guide though when comparing prices - they're nice to have, but the painting guide and flock are probably of very little use, while if you've been modeling for more than a month, you should already have some brushes and glue.

So, $270 divided by 64 means you're getting each paint pot for roughly $4.20 CA. That's a ripoff, as I can buy each individual paint pot for $4 even. So, if I bought all 64 paints individually, I'd actually be SAVING money, cause that would cost me $256 CA total - a savings of $14. I don't know about you, but when I buy things in bulk, I expect to be saving money, not spending more. Now, you could argue that with the extras, you're getting a deal, but even if you take those into consideration (which I'm not 'cause I'm buying the thing for the PAINT, not anything else), its not much of a deal (I think you would save a few bucks - $10 at most).

Now, take into account that for the average army, you'll likely only use 4-5 main colours at most. In addition, you might use some complimentary colours for your main ones, to use for shading or drybrushing, so that number goes up to 10 or so. In addition, you'll only use a little bit of some extra colours, such as shining gold, for small details. So at most, you're only going to use 12-15 colours on an army. Any more and your army will look too busy or disjointed. Let's assume you use 15. Well, then, you would have to paint at least 4 full armies, assuming you didn't use any colours twice - which you would - to use every colour in the main set. In addition, you would have to buy doubles of some of your most used colours, as you would run out. Also, some of the paint would probably dry out before you got to use it. If you have over 2000 points of unpainted Tyranids, I'd say that you're not the kind of bloke who paints very quickly. After one year, most of that paint will be solid, coloured crust.

So, in summary, if you really want to be a completist and have all the colours just for the sake of it, go for it. Pesonally though, I think the "facts" speak for themselves and it would be better to get each colour as you need it. You'll never use all of the colours anyway (pink, etc.) and it would be far cheaper to buy the paints normally.

All the paints you would need for one army, your Tyranid army for instance, would be about 15 at most. That equals $60 CA plus tax where I come from. That looks a lot better to me than $270 for a paint set, some of which I won't use, and some of which will dry out before I get around to using it. Hope this was the answer you were looking for.

i was exagerating a little bit. but it is quite a bit unpainted, i done 64 termagaunts and all my warriors. its just if not tyranids its still 2200 pts

in the uk its £110 and we pay £1.75 per pot r u sure ur maths is correct?

where is the delete key gone?

ok i wont bother, i guess its just i dont have a way to experiment.

The Mega Paint set doesn't seem worth it considering the armies you own, just buy the paints you need, it will end up being less expensive and won't leave you with lots of unused paints around.

I wouldn't ever go for the Mega Paint Set, personally, but I am not a great fan of painting. I think the "Serious Hobbyist" is just a bit of GW hard-sell which your friends at LO just saved you from. ;)

There are so many paints in the mega set that you would not use. Why have 5 shades of pink when your armies are blue? Your much better off getting the paints you need separatly.

I'd recomend collecting and building a paint set with each
paint being bought seperetly. You can customize easier.

I'd say get the set.You never know when you might decide to start a new army or change your paint scheme, and it will be nice to have all the stuff you need already sitting there waiting for you.I suck at painting and (I found this out today) suck even worse at converting models, but I'd kill for that ultimate set deal in the back of the catalog.

i bought the mega paint set and i have to say its the best buy ive done in a long time. ever have that last bit of highlighting to do and you just dont have the right colour, prob solved with mega paint set, want to add a dif colour to something like a verteran sergeant or a champion, mega paint set to the rescue, i love the mega paint set though i can understand why it would be a waste of time for some people

(ive just re read that and realised i sounded like a tv advert lmao)

also bloody hell you canadians are expensive. it works out cheaper to us in the UK to buy the mega paint set.

A pot of paint for us Canadians (from GW) is 4.60, tax included. So, considering that the book will probably be about 15$, and the brushes, glue and flock are hideously expensive, it would probably work out cheaper. But I still wouldn't buy it.

BTW, unless you are doing girly 'Nids or a heavily Slaaneshi Chaos army, I see no reason ot have 4 shades of pink.

I think the only reasons to buy the Mega Paint set are if you have the money to spare and for convenience's sake. You'll never use all those paints, but if the thought of having to drive to the store when you find out you need a new colour just rubs you the wrong way, the Mega Paint set will come in handy then. I guess...

And hell ya Canadian prices are insane! This comes from a time when the American economy was strong and one of our dollars could only buy 60 cents US or so. Now that our dollar is stronger and the US economy is weaker (like, one $ Canadian for 75 cents US now), we Canucks are getting hosed.

Don't buy from GW. Buy from online discount websites and eBay and stick it to those ignorant *****s who won't adjust their Canadian prices as they should have long ago.

Well.. I never heard of company dropping prices.. haha.. it's too bad, I will order online as well.

But possibly, just possibly.. when the price hike inevitably happens in US.. they will readjust then.

What if you like to darken the pink, as it creates a more realistic blood affect. Huh?

or what if you have a dark eldar army huh?
