Just getting into warhammer 40,000.
How important is it to have your models accurately depict evey little detail from your army list? Is it not appropriate to make up two seperate lists ( maybe one for vs tau, and another vs eldar) and use the same models as long as the opponent knows what is what? I know my brothers and friends won't mind, but as far as other people... It's hard to start out with an army and than want to change your mind on equipment after a couple of battles. Do you need a sperate model depicting each variety of abilities?
I don't mean using Khorne berzerkers as noise marines. For example, is it ok to have 12 chaos space marines with bolters on my army list, and than field 4 of them with bolt pistols and a chain sword as long as it is understood what they are carrying?

Not under WYSIWYG rules (What You See Is What You Get) which means if they have a BP and CCW in the list the models has to have a BP and CCW.
I don't really mind if you have a good reason (Money), but if your doing cause your too cheap to buy the models then I wouldn't allow it. (Money can't always be an excuse btw!)

I was just curious to see if people would field more than one army list out of there models, or simply get more models.
how far does it go? say for demonic speed or Armor? If it is what you see is what you get, is there a universial pattern to follow for conversion, or does it concern weapons more so than gifts, and wargear?

well it depends. With my Tau I can field different lists based on pts total and not change stuff. You should make a unit and leave it that way, they as you expand and get more models you can rebuild some and stuff, but you should always follow WYSIWYG rules as they are used in most, if not ALL tourneys. Also you should be careful about custom building your army depending on who your facing as you'll be labeled a Powergamer, and generally, Powergamers aren't too well liked IMO.
I'm making a Witch Hunters army and heres what I'm doing: I made a base list of what I wanted at first, then as I played I found better playstyles for me based on the units I was using, then I modded the original list, not changeing the things I had, but changing what I did'nt have yet to better fit the new playing style. And don't forget, this is a game and your meant to have fun!

For me i started out with a guy who switches around armies all the time, buying random things so the WYSIWYG for us was if the base was the right size.
I play as Space Marines and sometimes i don't have enough tac's or i get and extra squad of termies when we play 1500pt games. This is where i get ork boyz for the tac's and maybe bust out the rough riders for termies.
To put it simply if you want to be a hardcore tourny dude then follow the WYSIWYG rule perfectly. If you just want to play with your friends then use proxy 'til you expand your army, plus i love seeing random fantasy, and even some mordheim models for a good game of 40k.

One thing you could do is add the "extra weapons" that you might want to swap out onto the figure - such as a power weapon secured to his backpack - thus you will have the WYSIWYG aspect of the figure.
Cheers,
