Hello avid gamers. I've just been recently thinking, citadel paint line doesnt have
alot of colours to choose from, All in all about 3/4 shades for each colour. I'm interested
to see what you'd guys reccomend for paint lines and what the product quality is.

Pretty much if you wanna try and describe something about a certian brand, compare
it with Citadel. I'm really familiar with the paint line and I pretty much know how to
get around by mixing colours to get shades and washes.

Basically at this point I'm pretty much open, if it has the same price as GW or lower
and same quality I'll check it out and test it on a model and get back to you.

Thanks a bunch guys!
sincerly: Painter in distress/boredome with current paint line selection.

I highly recommend Vallejo paints. They have high pigmentation and come in convenient eye dropper bottles - a great bonus for mixing colors. The model color range have around 250 colors or so. The game color is a bit thinner and almost matches GW paints verbatim. The model colors definitely need to be thinned quite a bit as they are a tad thick.

I have also heard good things about the new reaper pro paints. I haven't used them so I don't have any specific imput.

Cheers,

-Mike

Do you use vallejo for when you paint your professional models at curdled milk?

How do the color selections work out? And do they have any special inks or retardent?

I use vallejo paints almost exclusively. As for inks - I don't think they have any. I still use some really old GW ink as well as different acrylic and water color inks that I picked up at an art supply store.

I really like the game color line - as for the model color they have more than enough color selection. I think GW has maybe 80 colors - compare that to the Vallejo model color range of over 250 colors...

They do have some different additives however I haven't used any of them. I use floquil for my drying retarder - easily picked up at an art supply store.

Cheers,

Any other brands I might be interested in?

The top 3 brands predominatly used in this hobby are: GW, Vallejo, and Reaper. They will definitely be easier to find than others and are pretty much all top quality.

Aidiken has some paints out - but I have heard mixed things about them (mostly negative). Most craft paints you buy at a craft store (like michaels) has large pigmintation and isn't really appropriate for miniature scale work. Tamiya paints are a bit thick but I have had some interesting effects with the Tamiya clear paints (definitely needs to be watered down before use.) There are a few others that are similar to GW formulation but not nearly as widely available.

I honestly think that vallejo will offer you the most selections and quality. What you can do if you don't want to jump right into a full new set is start filling out your existing paints with other brands trying them out and finding what you like.

Cheers,

I have always wondered is GW paints are the most expensive. Are they?

A brand I got when I started gaming was Tamiya. I found it because I was cheep and looking for something less expensive than GW paints so I had decided to expirament with some cheeper brands and Tamiya was about 50cents to a dollar cheeper than GW. The paint needs a bit of thinner and smells kinda bad but it is basically the same as GW paints. As for the colour range I'm not sure what its like you could probably find it at a modeling store (for like planes and stuff). I'd say definatell see if there is a place nearbye you that you can get it at because its pretty good.

The Tamiya paints I have used (mainly the clear colors) have been quite a bit different and a lot thicker than the GW or Vallejo paints. I have also heard that they are quite a bit more glossy. From what I understand they are more geared towards military models and you will probably find that they are lacking in the brighter colors (especially if you are painting fantasy). I really like their clear paints but don't know how viable they would be to use solely. I am sure you will find other manufactures more agreeable in the long run.

I'm quite curious about the neo reaper paints. I'm looking for pretty much the
same quality of GW Citadel paints but I want more colour options.
