I'm using Red Gore as the secondary colour in my Tau army repaint (With Regal Blue as the primary), but I was wondering if I should use a white, black, or another colour of red to undercoat it with?

While it's possible to paint red gore over black, it really looks much brighter if you paint it over white. Over black, you get a very deep red that's more of a maroon or even a very reddish purple in appearance. I've tested, and the difference is pretty noticable.

Painting a mix of red gore and skull white over a black undercoat before a layer of red gore works well. Adding a red ink wash after the straight layer of red gore turns the red a nice shade as well.

I would definately say to paint it on over a black undercoat, and then if it is too dark you could always paint on a mix of blood red and red gore, that would work.

ive recently converted to always using a black undercoat, you just need more coats of successivly lighter colours over the black or it is too dark

Quoted for truth, i always use a black undercoat, no matter what the model. It just requires a few more coats if you need a light colour. It also makes the models look much more gritty and real life.

Maybe some people want a cartoonish look. A cartoonish look is good for Tau as they are pretty much based on Japanese Manga, plus they are high tech and probably keep everything clean and shiny.

Anyway, over black, I guess it'd be best to paint a few layers of brown (Scorched, then Bestial) before adding on the red, as brown is the closest you can get to red for the purposes of layering.

But bright red gore isnt exactly the best way to make a cartoonish look ;).

Well, I'm going for the scheme in the Codex-Regal Blue armour and Red Gore/Bestial Brown clothing. However, should I try mixing the Red Gore and Bestial Brown, or basing with Bestial Brown and then painting Red Gore over it?

Why do you want to mix bestial with red gore? Why dont you just paint red gore straight over the black undercoat?Do about two layers of it and if it isnt bright enough add abit of blood red into the gore and it should come out good.

I tried that, and it's TOO bright. I wanted a deep red for the cloth, but the Red Gore came out really bright over the black.

yes, tycho, you shade up so you Shade the model. this way you have darker colours in the recesses, and brighter colours where the sun hits it. it makes it look more realistic. besides. you can still get a cartoony look out of a black under coat. its a shading technique for muscles. its where you individually highlight each muscle, like a comic
