I have started playing promisance so I thought I should join the group thing as you can see underneath my avatar and I was just wondering, what happens now?

Does every usergroup do nothing but put something pretty under your avatar or do some groups actually mean something?

They are mainly used, I think, as "mailing groups" for the admins. If the wanted to tell all the (eg) RPG DMs without hunting through the forum to find everyone running a game, they could just send an IM out to all the members in the group.
For Promisance, another use is to "advertise" the game to those who don't know about it.
