How nice the staff are. I've heard sometimes that they screw up or try to push things on you but, the place I go away from here, they're damned nice.

The replacement policy. Every time I have had a problem with a product or order, they have given me a brand new item (and let me keep the old item) with no questions asked.

I also think the communities that spring up around and within GW are great; it inspires like minded people to gather and trade ideas. That is probably my favourite aspect

Cheers,
Rich.

I'd say the greatest thing about GW is that it is accessible. It's a gateway system... like marijuana! :) GW is found all over the world and is translated into a bunch of different languages, and has a great deal of supporting product. All of this makes it the most likely choice for a new gamer. And as I'm sure we can all atest this hoby is like the Hotel California; "you can checkout any time you want, but you can never leave".

And another thing. I have moved several times in the last couple of years and wherever I go I am able to find (after some searching in many cases) atleast one person who plays a GW game. So I say the best thing about GW is that there are so many players using it. If Warmachine had as many players I'd probably be playing that.

Oh yeah, the models are pretty neat too. But then again have you seen the Rackham stuff?

I love Games Workshop because they keep me entertained for hours painting their models and gaming and all they want in return is money :) And they are cheaper than hookers (Disclaimer: I only said that cos I thought it would be funny :w00t: )

I also love the fact that they still make some of the older models so you can go trolling through the website looking for cool stuff. I just bought a l load of bloodbowl models, and they don't even support it any more.

Finally, and this is the clincher : I love Games Workshop because of Warhammer World. That place is great, there is a hotel 5 minutes away from it, it has a bar with projection tv's and shows football and also the gaming room is huge. The whole place has a great atmosphere and it is also only a short cab ride away from the only Hooters in England, it just has it all.

I love it because of the 40k universe, I started playing in 89-90 Rt days, and over the last 15-16 years what has kept me in the game is the fluff. I love the total hoplesness of it but yet they keep fighting in the god-emperors name... the one thing that does tick me off a bit tho is the prices, yes I know im not going to turn this into a price rant, but when I started you could get two termies in a blister for 12.99 canadian at GW in Vancouver here, now...alote more then that ....

but what I love the most is converting the models and getting them just the way you want them into that special army that YOU love the look of... gotta love milliput and greenstuff :shifty:  :shifty:

I love the fact that they've brought out games with detailed and powerful background.

I love the replacement policy that rp252 mentioned, as well as the communities thing. I've made many friend through this hobby, and though I've not stayed in touch with all of them. GW stores have always acted as a base for those friendships, as well as somewhere to play some games.

customer support in general is really nice. I bought a pot of paint there, only to get home and find out I already had a full pot of that color XD. So a few weeks later I go back with the pot, ask if I can exchange it, w/o a repceit of anything, and they let me. thats some good trust, cause I coulda have used some of it, but did they know? also very friendly staff is nice.

While I don't play the game itself anymore, I do like the background fluff very much. For all it's criticisms, I think they've made a fantastic universe.

I dont think anyoane is disputing that GW is great as a whole.
I agree that the replacement policy is great, I have an XV8 suit for free becasue they sent me it instead of the commander I asked for.
The staff in the shops are overall very good when you take into consideration they are a business and they are there to sell stuff, but friendly and usually reasonably well informed (at least one or two staff anyway)
The models are nice, but are really starting to get overpriced, especialy the plastic replacements for metal models (they should be cheaper).
Warhammer world is good if you can get there on a regular basis, not so good if you live in scotland for example.
The main problems players are having is with white dwarf and the fact that the fluff and background seems to be less of a priority with GW, this is GW's main strength and the one that gets players caught up in the warhammer/40K world (I know it did me) if they let this slip it is just another game.
Also the pricing is getting stupid, I think I am right in saying we have had 3 price rises in 18 months and it simply cannot be justified, a £3 raise for infantry box sets is steep (20% is a hell of a rise in one go).
I love the 40K game, but that does not mean I have to be happy with GW and the way its going, I will always like the models and the game but if they persist in price rises and the downward spiral of WD it will only be detrimental in the long run.

My theory is they paid a hell of a lot for the LOTR ring licencing and its back fired, no one in my club plays it, my local GW has 3 or 4 players, they have to claw back the losses on LOTR and the only way to do this is to up the prices on the other games systems. LOTR depended on the hype from the films, thats gone now and I think GW made a mistake sinking so much into it and its popularity is waining. I may be wrong but thats how I see it, GW has gone down since LOTR and they need to ditch it and concentrate on the two games people love (40K and warhammer).

I agree. The background to the various games is unique, interesting and utterly captivating. It allows for the production of some brillaint novels, as well as some completely stunning artwork. Black Library and GW artwork are other things I will add to my list of GW's best attributes..

Rich.

Yes they have, 40k ( which is what I have gotten back into after a few year absence Real life sucks sometimes eh??:shifty: ) is a wonderful universe to play in. I love the fluff, its what has kept me into it. Altho, I do see a downward spiral, when rikimaru posted about the LOTR licence killing GW I thinks he hit the nail on the head there. When I pop into my local GW, I NEVER see anyone in the battle bunker playing LOTR, I have never seen anyone buy anything LOTR, and it looks like the merchandise doesn't move...litterly, the same boxes with my fingerprints in the dust on them. When they did there last price hike here july 1st all boxed sets over 20 bucks going up 5 dollars, I was very very disapointed. But thinking about it and looking back now hes right. They got the licence when it was hot, and well its umm icy-cold now. They should of just stuck with there Warhammer stuff and been content with that. But they are a business and well businesses make mistakes. I just hope they dont renew there licence when the time comes. Altho im shure out there somewhere there is some one who plays LOTR and swears by it as the greatest game out there... im shure He or She is out there...some where, I've just never run into He/She....:shifty: . I must also say im rather disapointed in the way WD has become also... we get the 'Canadian' version and well its not that bad, but I like to read the book for the fluff and new rules, andall it is now is a advertisment on the new figs...like I mean before atleast there was some rules/fluff to go with the figs now its just like....buy our stuff...you know you wanna...just buy our pretty stuff that you will never ever be able to paint as well as the 'Eavy Metal team... oh and dont forget about Medusa V...its metioned on ever second page.... and the backcover also.... sighs..... I know im kinda hi-jacking the thread here... and honestly I do love both Warhammer worlds even tho I dont play WFB I still LOVE the fluff for it ....and I will ALWAYS be a diehard 40k'er, ive invested like 16 years of my life into it ....and for the most part I have enjoyed it immensly. I think it is the greatest fluff universe ever created. Once it's got you there is no going back. The figs are rather good altho I find that with alot of the new figgies that there is to much going on on the fig itself. Its almost to detailed....But as to the success of GW, just do a google and see how much comes up for either WFB or 40k. I hope that you make the most out of your games...and if you need anyhelp with your fluff, look no further then the fluffmasters...:shifty:  :shifty: ( cheep plug;) )

I don't think it backfired on them at all, if you look at their financial statements for the last couple of years the turnover was up and they opened a whole load of shops across the world using the proceeds from Lord of the Rings. I think they expected it to be relatively short lived but would be a money spinner while it was popular. I can see it eventually becoming one of the specialist games on their website where you can play it but it is not fully supported.

This years accounts show a drop in turnover and profit as the LOTR stuff has died down, however they are still trading at a similar level to what they were before it.

Emperor's Throne! Has it been that long... 15+ years?? Wow, I've been modeling/playing this game for half my life. What has kept me hooked?? The wonderful minis, the unlimited potential in modelling, all the background fluff...

If anything, GW has built a universe so complex, so riviting, so real that it blows past anything Star Trek or Star Wars ever hoped to accomplish. IMO, the 40K universe smacks of realism and one does not have to look or think to hard to draw parallels with today's world. It has the right amount of stain and dirt, light and dark to make it ever evolving (as opposed to those shiny star fleet people).

I hope GW is around for a long long time. Most of it is excellent quality stuff. Let us just hope they don't sell out to the mainstream media...:( :x or our wonderful little universe will be raped by the executives of Fox/abc/nbc/msnbc/paramount/steven speilburg/that other guy (you get the hint).

I started player warhammer, both fantasy and 40k back in 1989, stopped played and gave away all my armies (had 6 fantasy and 1 40k) to friends in 1996. I recently retired and now have a lot of time to paint, model and play warhammer again. I can tell you that the difference in Gamesworkshop employees attitudes towards customers are like night and day.

Back in the early to mid 90s I ordered most of my figs by mailorder direct from GW in MD. Their attitude was that they were the be all end all to tabletop wargamming. Employees were surly, never seemed to want to help if they screwed up my order (sometimes consisting of hundres of dollars worth of figs) and most of the time my problem was never resolved. My local GW store based in Santa Monica, CA was not a lot better, but at least I could insure I was getting what I was paying for. I eventually became fed up with their customer service and stopped buying from them.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago. After some discussion with my wife I decided I wanted to get back into the tabletop wargamming hobby (she also wants to start painting figs-yipee !) I discovered that GW had a store very close to me in Arcadia, CA. The store employees were friendly and actually very helpful ! The Manager, Tony assisted me in choosing my army and made some good suggestion and figs to start with.

The figs awesome and even better than when I played. I am impressed by the detail they have achieved even on the plastic figs.

I think the figs are way too expensive, but all in all GW has taken a turn for the better.

Great discussion. I love GW for all of the reasons already listed: replacement, new models, new army books, all really well done.

It's a great game. It attracts interesting people.

I'm not too interested in their business dealings--what's gone bust or what hasn't--I just want them to stay profitable and keep the game around as long as possible.

That makes me think: have you ever considered how long FB and 40K will be around? Also, how old do you see yourself still playing it?

I'm curious about LOTR compared to Fantasy and 40K.

I don't know anyone who plays it, nor have I ever seen anyone in the local GW store play it. I would think it'd have a large following considering they're always coming out with new models and rules, but I for one always skip over the LOTR segments in White Dwarf because I don't care, and nobody in my gaming group cares either. I always had a little bit of a beef with it because I thought it took valuable attention away from the Warhammer core games.

But on to what I like about GW. The return policy, of course. The friendly and (overly?) enthusiastic staff. Oh, and the models look great. I know they're pricey, and I don't like the increases over the past year and the tradition of July "price reviews", but I think that GW makes some of the best models in the business. No doubt they've been having competition from certain up-and-coming companies (the Warmachine and Confrontation lines are solid!), and I think they have improved accordingly.

LoTR isn't played here either. I remember meeting one guy who played it and tried to get us interested. But nobody bit. Think about it, just deciding to collect another army demands a lot of cash and time, but a whole other gaming system means an even bigger investment of time and money.

What I like about GW right now is Skull Pass. It's a huge bargain for the number of models, and I'm going to swap my goblins for dwarfs, which I'll store until I assemble the Ogre army.

Hopefully I'll still be playing in years to come. I've been gaming for around about 10 years now, and its always been a hobby I have enjoyed.

And now that I'm finally starting to branch out into Fantasy and the Specialist games, as well as other companys games (Confrontation) I don't see me giving it up anytime soon.

I look forward to many good gaming years to come :D
