Frost January 11th, 2007, 00:15 Sweet! If only it wasnt from forge world so i could acctually afford to buy it! rp252 January 12th, 2007, 20:28 I also recently got the book (a signed copy lol). It is very good, absolutely worth the money. I was impressed the FW team managed to fit the rules into the first 18 pages of the book and still cover everything. The rest of the book is then full of fluff, squadron lists and hobby articles - its great! The game itself appears to be quite different from anything else GW produces. The movement system and maneouvering system are very fluid as would be expected. I especially like the idea of maneouver cards that must be decided upon before you know the enemies movement - making the game more reliant on thinking (and a bit of luck) rather than list-building. The system for shooting is very interesting also. I can't wait to play a game so I can see how it all works on the table. Once the rest of the Eldar aircraft are released I shall be getting myself a few and then going on a recon flight to find some opponents! GW Cardiff here I come XD Cheers, Rich. minus_t January 15th, 2007, 20:07 That sounds very interesting indeed. I was pondering whether to buy it or not, and decided to conserve my money (so I can eat and all that good stuff), but it sounds like I may reconsider... -t. rp252 January 15th, 2007, 20:12 Well, it certainly looks really good from what I can tell. The shooting phase has a bit in common with BFG and the thought of painting individual kill marking on each of my aircraft is too good to refuse! I'm ordering myself some Eldar Nightwings this evening (for my birthday) which shall be painted in the same colours as my Eldar fleet (Black-blue main with bone detail and red/yellow weapons/spirit stones). I get the distinct feeling that opponents are going to be hard to come by but I'll still collect. T, If you do start a squadron I'll give you a game (and indeed a sound thrashing) at the LO meet in July =) Cheers, Rich. minus_t January 15th, 2007, 20:24 How many ships in a squadron? If its not too many, I'll try and grab some and shunt them to (near) th top of my painting list =) Would be fun to play some other games, especially if it's anything like as fun as BFG. (oh how I wish I hadn't sold my old ships... *weep*) -t. Da Mighty Camel January 15th, 2007, 20:57 rp, if I get this game 'till the meet I'll shoot you all down! I'm quite intrested in it to. I'm shifitng between Eldar or Tau. rp252 January 15th, 2007, 21:31 @ T - First of all its probably good to note that the rulebook referrs to your entire force as a "squadron", so you only have to collect one - it can be any mix of fighters/bombers etc. Squadrons can be quite small - some of the scenarios suggest as little as 3 aircraft. Most aircraft range from 20-30 points (some big-uns are more points heavy though), so a 100 point squadron should be very easy to collect. Very few scenarios suggest more than 200 points of aircraft, so A few fighters, some bombers and one or two transport aircraft and you should be done. I intend to get about 10 aircraft in the end, but that'll cost me a fair bit so I'm going to space it out an just get some fighters and a vampire first. @ DMC - Cool, I shall enjoy racking up my tally of kills on your pitiful airforce [insert evil laughter here]! The Tau fleet looks pretty good to be honest, and you get to use the awesome Manta - rawr! I was also considering Tau, but the sexyness of the Eldar swung my vote in the end =). I've replied to your PM as well matey. Cheers, Rich. Da Mighty Camel January 16th, 2007, 10:10 But surely, the Eldar must be the kings of this game! The fluff describe the Eldar as nigh unbeatable in the skies, their aircraft capable of out-running, out-gunning and out-manouvering all opposition. I assume that they are heavy on the point-costs as usual, though? : D P4p3Rc1iP January 16th, 2007, 10:30 This sounds like a really fun game. I'm tempted to start an Ork squadron... :D I bet they're cheap in points though, so I'll probably have to get a whole lot. Too bad there's only 2 Ork planes... rp252 January 16th, 2007, 13:59 I assume that they are heavy on the point-costs as usual, though You assume correctly. They do cost more than most other forces' planes and have the most expensive fighters as is to be expected. They don't have the option to add additional payloads however (most other aircraft can carry bomb/missiles on wing pylons) and they dont have anything that can carry out high-level bombing; they have to undertake more dangerous strafing runs. These weaknesses kind of balace out how tough they are. The only reason I chose the Eldar is because I really like their models though - they are just so sleek =) This sounds like a really fun game. I'm tempted to start an Ork squadron... I bet they're cheap in points though, so I'll probably have to get a whole lot. Too bad there's only 2 Ork planes. Yeah, they only get 2 planes but they do get the option to kit them out with several different payloads of bombs/missiles etc. You also get Grot bombs! The rules for the grot bombs are great! Orks also get a couple of different Anti-aircraft ground units like flak wagons - more than the other races, so this helps to make up the difference as well. Ordered my first few Nightwings last night - The Celestial Kindred Skyhost has begun =D Cheers, Rich. P4p3Rc1iP January 16th, 2007, 18:58 Ah, sweet! I think I'll get the book first before I order any models anyway. My local game store should get the book next month or so, and by that time I'll have enough cash to buy it aswell. :) Jared van Kell January 18th, 2007, 14:44 They had this game at Games Day 2006. It was a great game to play and really easy to learn. I will be getting an Eldar and an Imperial squadron. JvK Cheredanine January 18th, 2007, 15:00 Would do it if they sorted out the Eldar range, the pheonix at least should be added, possibly the vampyre, but also the models are naff, I love my Nightwing 40K scale : [ing]http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g56/Cheredanine/El004.jpg[/img] but the one FW produce epic scale is just not sleak and deadly looking rp252 January 18th, 2007, 15:07 There are more models to be released. The eldar range includes the NIghtwing, Phoenix, Vampire (raider and hunter varients) and the Firestorm. In fact, the Phonenix is already on pre-release. Cheers, Rich. Cheredanine January 18th, 2007, 15:11 Ooo ooo must go look (both Pheonix varriants?) but if they are anything like the nightwing model, then probably not interested, the epic versions are chuncky and inelegant Cheredanine January 18th, 2007, 15:14 Been and looked, looks like standard pheonix, not the void stalkers, minis arent bad, but then the Night wings are not as bad as I remember, ho hum, there goes another hundred quid or so Jared van Kell January 18th, 2007, 15:23 ho hum, there goes another hundred quid or so Its a sad fact, I know. But oh so worth it. :shifty: JvK rp252 January 18th, 2007, 15:29 Yeah, another £100 further into my almost-used student overdraft I go. =) There are no rules for the other phoenix varient in the book, so I doubt they will release one just yet. Possibly as part of a suppliment in the future though..or at least I hope so. I'm of the opinion that the epic scale models are very nice. Obviously they don't hold the detail of the 40K scale ones, but I still think they look good. I should be getting my first few through soon so I'll let you know exactly what they are like when I get them if you want. Cheers, Rich The Paint Monkey January 19th, 2007, 11:48 Just out of curiousity- how do the manuveur cards work? Is it the same technique as the "Wings of War" game? From what I've gathered from other posts it's kinda similar. rp252 January 20th, 2007, 15:46 I've never played wings of war, so I can't compare the two sorry. Basically how they work is that at a point in your model's movement, you place the card in contact with the front of the model's base. You then move the model over the card (following printed arrows) until you have your new direction of flight. There is more to it than this, but thats it in a nutshell. Cheers, Rich. And different typesof aircraft have different moves to choose from, depending on performance? And you choose a series of cards which are then played simultaneously with your opponent? Are there certain cards that can only be used in certain orders (Going out on a limb with this guess)? If these guesses are anywhere near close it sounds like GW may have borrowed the idea from a fairly popular boardgame. Shabby. |
