Hello all, I just wanted to expand on the new paints, and give a lil info about colored primers. I've also seen the new paints, and they are amazing...no more putting 3 or 4 coats of paint on just to get it so it is a solid color. With these new ones, you put one coat, and that's it. No metalics though. I can't wait to get my set :)

I would also like to inform you all, if u don't know yet, that GW has also discontinued the colored primers. so, if you need the colored primers, get them before it is too late. There will still be the black and white, and they've also added a rough coat. I like it, but I will miss the spray cans to make painting a lil quicker.

I had some quality issues with the spray paints anyway, so I say good riddance - while being able to basecoat marines and tanks was nice, there are other ways of accomplishing this without the spray cans.

The foundation paints look interesting though. I pre-ordered two sets myself. This may be GW's last chance to get my paint-buying business back before I switch fully to Vallejo.

some nice new colours - My personal favourites are Machrite red and Deneb stone

Hmm I don't personally use GW primers spray or otherwise. I do have a can of the boltgun metal for buildings and a tank I did long ago, but nothing a bottle and tank brush can't do. All those planning on doing Dark Angels the easy way better get their DAG spray cans now. hehe

I have not tried, nor do I plan to try, the new base coats. My friend that got me into the hobby, who taught me a lot of what I know about painting, and whom I regard as one of the better ones in the area, tried them at a store. His personal opinion is he didn't like them. To thick and gloppy for the most part.

I find it interesting that all the 'eavy Metal articles I've read lately really promote watering down your paints and doing them in several layers to get a good, smooth finish. Now they want us to take this new, thicker paint and brush it straight onto a model as a basecoat?

I said this before and I'll say it again. The key is not priming with black. I stopped doing it long ago because of this problem of bleedthrough. I now use a nuetral grey primer, that I have been very happy with for over a year now. I can put any GW paint on it straight with no watering down, and it looks normal. If I water it down to get a good, smooth finish, I only 2-3 layers for the base color. The problem isn't their normal paints, the problem is the primer color. Like for example why would you prime black for some like Wood Elves with all the bright, light colors they have? Silly.

well, gman, i think you should try the paints anyway. your mentor may not like them, but you won't know until you try. all the stores have stations set up so you can try them out. I think you will be impressed with what you see

and as far as spray cans go, ultra marines blue and fortress grey are the only colored cans i've seen in my area. DAG has pretty much dissapeared...fortunately, i have pretty full cans of all three of my army colors :)

Maybe they are switching the supplier and will come out with different cans/options/colors?

I'll certainly give the new paints a go.

As for the Rough Coat being 12 quid, that's what? about $25-30? Ye-ouch!

Over here in the Colonies, there's an arts and crafts supplier called 'Michael's' that sells the exact same thing (AND..in different colors!!! :yes: ) for about $5/can. So that's what? About 2 quid?

I use Rust O'lium brand automotive primer. It goes on real smooth, no running, no glopping and goes on nice and thin. It also dries real fast, where you can paint on it in a couple of hours with average temperatures. That GW black spray paint needs to sit over night to dry completely through.
Oh yea, and the Rust O'lium is only $3 a can, instead of $9 :D
