Hey everyone!

I thought I'd show off my new Sarge.

Today was my first day using a wet palette and I absolutely loved it. Rather than spending all my time mixing paints after they'd dried I saved a TON of time and got a chance to take my time on parts of the model I'd normally rush just to get things done.

There's actual blending and I even messed around with a recipe for the oxidization on the sword which I think turned out pretty well. I really enjoyed painting the face on this one, even though it's a Catachan head and I'm not 100% happy with the sculpt, but at least it wasn't that Cadian sergeant head....again.

Anyway, hope you like him!

Thanks for looking!

How do you use a wet pallet without your paint spreading out all over it?

Or am I mistaking 'wet pallet' for something else?

No thank you, for posting such nice guardsmen. Overall the painting is crisp, clean, and they would make any commisar happy. Kudos for the nice Guardsmen.

Very nice painting, standing up to your reputation. I think the head looks a little odd, probably because of the bandanna. I can't really picture a Sergeant wearing something that out of uniform. Maybe a normal guardsman, but not the sergeant. Just my opinion. The painting is tops!

Haha, thanks.

There's only so many options one has for plastic heads unless I feel like conversion work or buying non-IG related stuff. I just don't have the time or money to do all that I'd like to, so I get by. :)

I was hoping the model would get the point across of a Sergeant just about to "throw down"; protocol be damned hence the menacing "head down and walking up to kick your ass" pose.

Since I have so much to paint, there's not going to be much variety in my Grunts. I prefer to save my more creative moments for sergeants and higher. Besides, if they've lived long enough to be promoted I imagine they have earned the right to be at least a little idiosyncratic. At least in my army!

Thanks for the input!

That is some really nice rescue from the "all over again and again boxed IG sergant". The personality of the model just stands all out together with the great paint scheme this is the sort of things miniature gaming is all about. Just one quicky... Are the base edges going to be painted or are you going to keep'em all black? Otherwise I really like the model.

A wet pallet consists of a damp sponge and a layer of paper (blotting paper works, or the nice cheap version.. grease proof paper - used in lining baking tins). The paper gets damp on one side and keeps the paint above wet for a lot longer than it would on say a tile. Very handy thing it is. I've been using one for at least a year now.

Undeadair - He's looking good as usual. The sword gives him a bit more of 'dirty' feeling if you know what I mean. Not all so clean and pretty. =D

I always keep my edges black. Now that I think about it I have no idea what the standard is. If you look at old White Dwarf magazines they used to paint the edges green and looking back now, I think it looks horrible. :)

After I base my miniature I sand off as much of the excess wood filler that gets on the sides and then use Chaos Black to touch it up.

KUF - Thanks for the comment! I was really going for a down and dirty Sarge here, so I'm glad it's showing!

Another nice Cadian to go with the rest of your lads! I love the pose and the paint job. Good to hear that you have joined the wet-pallet club. I couldn't live without it.

One comment. I think you should have painted the bandana green or brown instead. The red colour just doesn't go with Cadians in my opinion. It makes him look like a Catachan in a Cadian uniform.

Just some thoughts. :)

Done.

After taking feedback from the faithful, I've had the Sarge dispose of his red bandana in favor of one that falls more in line with the color scheme. I painted it the same color as the fatigues and i'm much happier with the result. I'll have pics when I take squad shots soon.

That’s a really nice looking Sarge.
I'm with Boba on the 'not sure about the red bandana theme'. Maybe make it look camo. WW2 GI Para’s are quite often pictured with pieces of camouflage parachute material tied around necks etc. Just a thought.

Thought for the day: Alcohol and eBay don't mix. Oh yeah

Wow, he looks fantasarasmic!

Just one thing..

A wet pallet, do you have to buy one or just own a sponge...?

If you haven't seen one before, this is one type of wet palette (hope you don't mind me showing this in your thread, undeadair).

It has two types of paper in the recess, underneth is a thick, unpressed 'rag' paper (in UK we know this as blotting paper) and on top is a thin 'membrane' paper and thats what the paint sits on.

He is very good. I like the paint work on him and the way he looks. To me he isn't just painted well but his painting seems to give him character. He looks tired and dirty, which is I imagine how the average Guardsman spends most of his life.

Very good.

Boba just got in their in front of me with his suggestion to change to bandana colour. But apart from that I have no other comments. I really like him. Looking forward to the group shot.

I really must get me a wet-pallet.

You know you can make your own wet pallet. I have made mine myself.
All you need is some of those round cotton wool thingies (the ones girls use to apply face tonics or to get rid of make up), some thin sandwich paper and an old CD cover.

Make the cotton wool wet and place them in the CD cover. Put the paper on top and VOILA! A nice wet pallet!

Seriously all, a proper wet palette makes a world of difference.

Another awsome model from you, undeadair. I know it's hard to come up with uniqe-looking sergaents and Guardsmen so I have used a few catachan heads here and there, and I like the variety.
