View Full Version : BA Scouts - [PIC Heavy] slorak April 19th, 2007, 18:22 Thought I would share my latest commission project. These are High Gaming Standard Blood Angel Scouts. The bit thing to note on these guys was my first use of Vallejo Game Inks - mainly red ink. I am very happy with the results.
Reds were built from a gore red up to a bloody red (vallejo game color) and then glazed with Vallejo Game Color Red ink. I have said it before and I will say it again here. The vallejo red in dried dead flat. I really liked it a lot. Much better coverage than the red ink I was using from GW (really really old ones from the early 90's).
Tans were started from a medium brown and lighted to deck tan (vallejo model color).
Without further ado - enjoy the pictures... Comments, critcisms, observations, diatribes, monologues, epic poems, etc. are very much welcomed! :w00t:

-Mike Tsele April 19th, 2007, 18:28 I loved the conversion to the second scout who is ready to chop heads off!
And the painting! Man... awesome! Strong colours but not tiring to the eye! And a very clean result! Well done! How many hours did they took you to finish them?
And will we see some more? :w00t: slorak April 19th, 2007, 18:54 It is really hard for me to judge time as I usually paint for an hour or 2 a few days a week. I would say I probably invested about 15 hours of time on them. Maybe a bit more. I waste a lot of time just looking at the models and figuring out how I should do things...
I have been working on an army for the same client so I have a bunch of pictures up on my website. Next I will be working on 2 Rhino's for him.
Can't really take credit for the poses - they were shipped to me like this. :)
Cheers!
-Mike Hard A** April 19th, 2007, 18:56 Very nice  Are they the new(ish) plastic ones? slorak April 19th, 2007, 19:00 They are indeed the new plastic ones. Not too bad on the details.
Cheers,

Here at LO we've come to see,
Your paintings rather good,
As such I like these BA scouts,
I'm sure you knew I would.
My favourite thing about these guys,
Your new inks helped achieve,
Are the red parts of the armour,
And the sergeant's chainsaw sleeve.
The lone thing that is not so great,
About these Neophytes,
Though not a big deal in the end,
Is the lack of hair highlights.
So, in plain English. I think the use of the red inks has worked very well, the models look great. Going to give the vallejo stuff a try myself methinks. The hair looks a little flat in the pictures, in need of some more highlights. I get the feeling it looks better in real life however..
Cheers,
Rich. chemicalcaveman April 19th, 2007, 19:21 Rep for you right there rp252!
Looking great slorak, as we've all come to expect from you. I'm very impressed with the way the reds came out for you. I like everything about these models expect the heads. Some of the ugliest sculpting GW have done in years IMO, just goes to show you how good the paintjob was that they didn't annoy me as much as they usually do. slorak April 19th, 2007, 19:26 As you asked so nicely, I'm going to write my response in the form of a poem (yeah, I'm an idiot - nothing new there).

LOL - this was real good. I like it! :)
As for the hair - the sculpt is completely flat so I had to paint the hair strands in 2d. I painted the hair with a base of desert sand, inked with brown ink, and painted striations by taking the base desert sand and mixing in bone. After this I glazed the hair with the vallejo game ink yellow. The striations were diminished somewhat by the ink glaze but I think it works as it doesn't quite look so much like a painting now. I think the pictures diminished it further - you can kinda see a little bit of it but not too much.
Thanks again! ;)
Cheers,

ROFL! *claps* Well done that man! Nice work!
Mike - Have to say I like these, the reds are very strong and solid. Seems the inks are good, no gloss shine like the GW ones then? Overall, nice work. =)

Yeah on the Red ink no shine. Dried very flat. I have tried a few of the other inks as well, yellow, brown, flesh, and dark green, so far they all turned out nice - though red was the flattest of the bunch!
Thanks for your comments! :)
