I have a unique painting challenge for my army, that I hadn't given much thought to until now.

I play 'nids, and did some conversion work on my raveners. I have one burrowing up out of the ground, with a suitable pile of dirt all around him as he pops out to surprise the enemy. The problem though is that a creature popping out of the ground isn't going to have the shiny brilliant colors of the rest of my army - it's going to be dingy and dirty and covered in muck.

My problem is, I have no idea how to paint that.

Suggestions?

Take some flock, mix it with brown paint and glue in equal amounts, then dip a toothbrush in that and spatter it all over.

Hmm, that's a hard one. I found this article on the GWUS website, and though it features Marines it might just help you out. Linky (http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/damage/5/). I think the mud at the bottom of the article would help you out the most.

Awesome link, that may be just what I need. Thanks!

Take this comment with a grain of salt... Sometimes it is best to paint them in an unrealistic manner. If you make them too "dirty" they could very much end up looking plain and boring next to your other figures. Personally I would stylize the dirtiness by emphasizing the dirt piles, etc. without actually muddying down the colors of the figure itself.

Cheers,
