i recently started looking at Lamenters. i decided to paint up a few models, or one like i usually do with anything i paint. so, i remember bobahat painting the checker pattern on knee pads. if he shows up, i will be happy. i need to know how to do this!

oh, and no one will receive rep for the normal response of 'practice' or 'just stick it out'. i am looking for any fairly OK methods.

You can either mask it , with masking fluid or masking tape or just do free hand.

1 undercoat black
2 carefully start to checker with space wolf
3 and then paint white over the space wolf grey (may take more than one watered down coats )
4 paint black over any mistakes

Hope i helped

Try sketching the tiles lightly with a mechanical pencil, and then use that as a guide to paint them on.

thanks, i am going to use both of those. the yellow turned out pretty good, with only 3 coats and 2 colors. i am pretty happy with Vallejo game colors right about now.

I was going to suggest using a .005 magma pen. Works great for small details.

alright. next question. what side should the heraldry go on? i am guessing the model's left shoulder, but the pics disprove my thoughts. maybe yours can help me.

The Space Marine codex says....

"Space Marines usually display their Chapter symbol on their left shoulder guard and a symbol denoting their squad type on their right shoulder guard." -pg. 69

This is, of course, assuming that the Lamenters are a by-the-book chapter, as I'm sure some of the more 'unusual' chapters deviate from this.

For doing a check pattern make sure you paint the lightest color first. Next go back and draw/paint very fine black (or whatever the darker color is)lines in a grid pattern. If you want a diamond patter you would simply draw the grid on the diagonal.

Next you would go back and fill in every other one. Unfortunately practice would be the method to get straighter more even looking patterns but otherwise that is the basic method. Holding your breath while keeping your elbows on the table will help you get straighter lines.

If you mess one up you can always touch it up - however be prepared for it being more difficult to fill in the lighter color. :)

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,

-Mike

Oh by the way - I am not entirely convinced the pigma pen is easier than the brush to draw on the grid. Though it can be easier to fill the pattern in with.

you managed to get yellow right?

Can you tell me how to do that? please. i want to use yellow in a sheme for Tau, but getting it neatly without the underlying layer showing is hard? or it gets smothered eventually with the layers. (need more practice)

i used two thin coats of sunblast yellow over white basecoat. then i did a coat of gold yellow and some touchups after that to do the job. next was a thinned wash using some kind of brown. and some highlights with gold yellow again.

i may have mixed up the color names, but i think they are corresponding to the right colors. these are vallejo game colors paints. i'm sure you can figure the GW conversion for th paints. and if you can't, find one darker for the first part and one lighter for second part.

and i figured it'd be regular style, but i was not sure. thanks!

oh, and i would get some vallejo paints, at least the kinds that are troublesome. they have more pigment and therefore cover much better.

ok tips:

1. as Mike said, for checkers patter, base colour should always be the lighter one

2. If you are stuggling to get an even yellow, try painting a basecoat of one of the yellower browns first
