has any one else noticed how the crons always lose in the wd battle reports?
we're not running, we're attacking in another direction!
-Call Of Duty 2
Keep in mind most Bat reps are rigged to showcase whatever army or unit GW thinks needs a sales boost. The recent Ultramarines vs. Necron report was a classic example of this. What's absolutely hysterical is that so many newbies are going to go blow wads of cash on the new Terminators (and I'm sure some will even aim for having full Terminator armies like the one depicted in the bat rep), then they'll find out the hard way that Terminators don't fare as well as depicted.
If the Necron player had been allowed to take a few more decent units in his army, he probably would have wiped the floor with Calgar and his tin-can soldiers. I think there were only 5 of the 21 Terminators and the Land Raider remaining at the end of the battle...if only the battle's conclusion wasn't planned for beforehand, the Necron player should have owned Mr. Haines.
Soooo...don't despair. How an army functions in White Dwarf gives no clear indication of how it really functions. And let all the masses get doped into spending money on tons of units that, in the end, won't win the day for them.
I don't buy the whole they rig the battle reports idea... Maybe in the dark days of 2nd and early 3rd edition, but certainly not in the past several years. Sure, they usually do the battle for a battle report several times, they openly admit that, but its more because steamroller massacres are not any fun to read. Close games are fun to read. I haven't been keeping tallies, but how many armies have won in their debut battle report recently? IIRC, most of them have lost.
I don't remember Necrons ever winning a battle report in WD. They lost in their debut battle vs. Dark Angels, they lost vs. Slaanesh marines, they lost this month vs. Ultramarines... Can't think of any other Necron battle reports off the top of my head, but I would bet they lost in them, too. Oh wait, they won vs. Dark Eldar in the battle report on the GW website. But that wasn't in WD. I'm not even sure if they won that battle...
becuase whoever made this army has it all printed on one page and throws darts at it to see what units is coming to battle.. no res orb(WTF ARE YOU DOING WITH NO RES ORB!!!!!???) no heavy destroyers verses terminators... i mean cmon....
The Necrons did win a battle report, waaaay back in White Dwarf 218. They fought the Sisters of Battle and trounced them. But, of course, it was 40k 2nd edition and Necrons were stupidly hard in those days (T8 scarabs!!! What!...).
"Peace, through superior firepower."
I think maybe a more interesting question is not how many battle reports has race X or race Y lost, but how many has Space Marines won, or even been featured in. Again, admitting that they are GW's poster boys, but being in nearly every single battle report and winning close to 90% of them is just...aggravating. I think that WD really needs some non-SM batreps (and I mean a lot of them, without either Marines or Chaos Marines as either opponent).
I agree as most players know I hate the SM. There the child of GW (general known faqt) and are promoted to much pretending liek there the best race of 40k while every decent Eldar or Dark eldar player can whipe a decent SM player from the board. (At least in my case it ends up 60% of the itme in a massacre)
I dont buy the WD anymore I mean there aint that much usefullnes in it. The tactica in the WD just sucks period made by some noob players wo are fantasising when there heavy weapon platforms work the best. Tought it was in 300 that there was a eldar tactica ive seen only half a page before shutting it and giving it back. That tactica was (nearly vomits) you get my point. They should just ask the veteran players. The best players are on the forums so look on the big forums like LO and EO and ask for there best ppl to write a tactica sticking there heads together. THAT will be a good tactica NOt those of some geeks that dont know that were playing the 4th edition rules and not he 3th anymore.
Its a shame that the WD releases 'false' information about the units making them to appear uber but once the ppl have bought them they will know wat they really can do and in general are alot worse then the WD said. I will never look in the WD to get some ideas wat to ad next to my army. Most of my batlle experience has taughed me all I need and that wat I dont know I can always ask here were the real players are.
However with that statement out of the way, I would say listen to ArchonBjorn. He has a really good tendency to not say stupid things and give bad advice.Learn from yesterday.

I have to agree, just by lising to you guys I feel your pain, I've read the Necron codex, if you don't take a Res Orb you may as well keep the car warm.... HalberdBlue, When they do a batrep the players have to choose an army based on the "curently painted models available", so how can you say it's not rigged, it's dancing in front of your face, In the GW batrep between Necrons and DE, NO RES ORB, the Necrons lost cause the super souped up Archite p0wned them, and it all happened in 3 turns....
I kind of agree with the point about the tactica, they do kind of soop up whatever they feature. The best tactic I have ever read from WD was for Death Guard and was written by some dude with a website or somthing (i dont remember the issue number but it was the UK edition with Gimly on the cover). Anyway most of his info fairly constructive and usfull but the bet bit was when he got to talking about Chosen and Possessed. Now a true WD tactica would have bigged up these guys (termies cos they cost lots) but this dude basicly said that they had no rael practical use and the only good aspects where basic, unmodified possessed (nice and inexpensive) and the extra toughness of the termies. Nice to see someone dissmissing units as usless from time to time.
