On behalf of all of us and in honour of our fallen and once-loved magazine, I call for an organized protest.
White Dwarf has lost its way. It is a crappy magazine - a shell of its former self. We cannot keep supporting it, because if we do, then we give the WD editors the message that we are happy, and I think I speak for the majority of us when I say: WE ARE NOT.
There are some who say WD lost its way after Paul Sawyer left, and since about the early 290's, the mag has steadily decreased in quality. I for one didn't find the quality loss to be too severe, but in the past 4 issues, WD has undergone a major structural change, both in the magazine layout as well as the internal staff. Here in Canada, White Dwarf has undergone a relaunch (we are now on Canadian issue #3, which is actually issue #320). Since we have done so, I have seen the magazine completely degenerate into a giant advertisement flyer that has practically no value to serious GW gamers anymore.
The main thing I hate now about my once-loved WD is the length, or lack thereof. It used to be 130+ pages. Now its 100. It used to have a smaller font and fewer pictures. Now the font is huge and the pictures take up about 75% of every page. In the past, if I'd read a WD cover-to-cover, it would occupy me for about 1-2 hours. Now, I can breeze through one in 30 minutes. For me, that's not worth $11.50 (over-the-counter) or even $7.25 (subscription) per month. In addition, pretty well everything that the magazines do cover, including and especially their "exclusive pictures", can be found online or even on the official sites.
Smarten up, White Dwarf. I am one unhappy customer, and I'm not alone.
Fellow LO posters, tell me what you think. I propose a two-pronged protest, consisting of:
1. That we organize a freeze-out for a coming issue. Whether it be the next one (#321/#4), or the one after, or the one after that, we should all agree and get all of our friends and fellow gamers to avoid purchasing the next issue (if you must read it, ask the staff at your local GW store to peruse their store copy --- most stores don't have a problem with this). If we can get enough people to avoid buying an upcoming issue, WD will take a hit in profits, and hopefully they get the message.
2. In addition, we should all email White Dwarf and Games Workshop and share our concerns and our discontent. Let them know just how dissatisfied you are with the major downturn in quality over the last few issues.
If we organize this and get enough people on board, maybe it will make a difference. It might not, but we'll never know unless we try.
What say you?

I think what we need to do is draft a standard complaint about the quality drop in WD and I think your post very much sums it up, but I think we also need something added along the lines of my points in this excerpt below:If we produce a standard draft for the e-mail and make it clear that its from one source and is a co-ordinated protest from a major fan forum and not just a half assed complaint, it will really have an impact.Originally Posted by rikimaru
All it would need is a cut and paste and each menber to put his name and country on the e-mail and I think it would make a very powerful protest
What do you think?, but it must e massed e-mail protest so the LO mods would need to put out a co-ordination anouncement.
I completely, 100% agree and support your idea, rikimaru. How about we wait for a bit and see how much buzz this thread gets, and maybe we can start something up on the main General Discussion board as well. We'll also wait to see if any mods get on board (I imagine Toastee probably will support it), and if we can get a unified protest going, then we can draft the LO letter and have everyone who wants to participate send it off.
Lets keep the good ideas coming, everyone. The future of our magazine is at stake.
Sounds good to me, I see no reason why the mods would not get on board and support this, I mean this is supposed to be a 40k,Warhammer etc fan forum site, populated by fans and a major part of the hobby is the hobby magazine (at least it used to be a hobby mag as opposed to the thinly disguised catalogue its turned into) so the mods should be as concerned as we are.Originally Posted by Houston
We need the mods to put out an announcement or its just not going to have enough impact, we need numbers and co-ordination, it would be nice to know we accomplished something, one other thing we need to consider is who is going to be the point of contact between GW and the protestees, we need to know just what GW response to the e-mail is and the best way to do this is to ask GW to contact one particular person, this needs to be in the draft.
I'm game for it (I'll even help draft it, as I used to work in soul-less corporate hell and know what trips their triggers)
I used to read WD back in the day ( WD80-110US) when they actually had RULES in it. Each month there was a new and cool way to expand your gaming. 'EM used to have REAL lessons for painting and conversion. I'd get rabid waiting for the next copy to be released. Now I don't even care, I've got pleny of other stuff to wrap dead fish in.
Baby, when I'm the voice of reason, we've got problems!~artificerSomeone should stop

I too have been lamenting the loss. I want to see less of a focus on any one gaming system, and more of a balance between the three(recently, I have seen one issue focus on LotR, one issue on 40k, and one on Fantasy). The focus gets over half the magazine to itself, while the remaining two systems get crap.
Also is it too much to ask for some more pages? My video game magazines and the like get more pages. What I want to see are more 'double sized issues' like the anniversary one. That was a nice issue.

Just got this reply from the LO mods regarding a massed e-mail protest from the LO forum, have to say I can see their point, maybe we need a new tact.
Anyway here is the reply I got by PM, by the way Toastee thanks for your efforts.Originally Posted by LO reply
I admit that I see their point as well. Impartiality is a fragile thing to hold onto. Well, I'm still all for doing as the mods say and asking for support in a thread, preferably on the General Discussion board. After that, Rikimaru and I (if its okay with you Rikki) can compile a list and PM everyone with a drafted letter. If it does not get a lot of support, I guess we can figure things out from there.
To the mods: as you have requested, we will make no mention of LO in any way, shape or form in the letter. And in our PM's to posters, we will stress that everyone must sign the letter as individual, concerned gamers.
I am happy to help, if you put the post on the general discussion board and we get some support, I will draft a letter and send it to the mods for their approval and then we can get something done about the diabolical mess that WD has turned into.Originally Posted by Houston
I would hope it does get some support after all it only takes a signature and an e-mail and we may get the old WD back and get that bloody new editor sacked hopefully
Look...all i see if people moan and b*tch about the WD. If you dont like it dont read it. The target market for GW now isnt 20yr old vets, but 10 yr old beginners that stare in amazement at the bright colours. Personally they wont give a rats a$$ about your complain, you are a minority, most people who get WD are ignorant little children where GW is draining $$$ away from their rich parents, now let them be.
Just dont read it. Im sure if youre looking for tactica then the nets got plenty, if youre looking for new releases/sneak peeks, then warseers got alot and theyre at least 2 months ahead of their time. If you like battle reports (god...i wonder why), then go play some games for once, much more exciting, and stop sitting in your lazy a$$es.
Sorry about this, but its just that ive heard too many "i hate GW", " WD suks" threads and pissing me off. Its your choice ppl, take responsibility for your own actions in choosing this hobby and buying a goddamn overpriced magazine.
