Well, I was gathering the troops for my first 40k army (Tyranids) when I was tempted to check out Battlefleet Gothic. I researched it online and wanted to give it a chance, so I put my 40k aspirations on hold (though I thoroughly intend on returning at some point) and build up a BFG fleet.

Thing is, when I bought the Starter box at my local GW store, I asked how many players play BFG around here, and the clerk told me that I'd be the first.

So, here's my dilemma. I want to play BFG but have no one else to play with. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem? Battlefleet is a LOT less popular than 40k, but it is growing rapidly. How do you guys deal with the lack of BFG representation (hell, my GW store doesn't even sell any BFG stuff except for the Starter box). Also, have you enticed others in your area to start?

I was thinking of passing out pamphlets or some other such silly thing to try to garner interest in this relatively new game. Any ideas? And is there anyone in my area (Greater Toronto Area - Ontario, Canada) that plays?

I know BFG will never rival 40k in its fanbase, but even if I could just get 3 or 4 other players together, that would be great.

My store, and in fact my whole country, doesn't sell any BFG. I had to order mine from overseas...

BFG was popular for a while, but it no longer is, and I have no idea even how many people in my are still own it, I don't think there are many though. I solved this by buying up two fleets, imperial and chaos, so while I am learning the rules I can be teaching my friends and they can use one of my fleets. That way I potentially have around 4 or 5 opponents who have expressed interest and probably more will get into it when I start playing.

My store just recently enlarged their GW section in order to include displays for E:A and BFG. I asked who played them, because I have a 2k Imperial fleet and was also considering starting up E:A. The clerk told me I'd be the second BFG player (the first being a guy that no one sees anymore), and that I was the first person to even ask about E:A. But hopefully, BFG'll pick up with the "new" edition, seeing as it'll be done by Chambers and won't be a complete rewrite of the core rules. I hope.

I had to special order my fleet, which is currently 2,265 points strong. Actually, I picked up BFG before WH40k. Eldar corsairs all the way!

Finding the first opponent usually is the most difficult. Once you have found one play at your store when there are lots of people (40k players are best of course, as they already are familiar with - and interested in - the universe of 40k). You'll surely find others who are interested in it.

In order to find the first opponent, point out that the rules are simple but logical, and available for free download. Also mention that BFG is a lot cheaper to collect than 40k (at least imperials and chaos), and if possible bring two fleets to the store so you can play other introductory games than fleet x against another contingency of the same fleet.

Thanks for letting me know your ideas, everyone. I'll try to "convert" some of the 40k players in my area (muahahaha...). In the meantime, I thought I'd experiment here on this forum. Afterall, more players = more interest = more money going GW's way and thus = more attention given to BFG; more ships, new races, new ideas, new, New, NEW!

So, leave me to my fate if you don't like the sounds of this, but I'm going to post a BFG post in the General Discussion forum just to garner attention and try to get some people to research Battlefleet who otherwise wouldn't have. I'll just post some general ideas as to why its such a great game and how it complements 40k so nicely (more so than Necromonda, Inquisitor, Epic, etc.).

Any and all of you are welcome to post your thoughts in the topic. Maybe we'll really get some people interested in the game. Regular gamers of BFG: your comments will be greatly appreciated. Tell tales of your most memorable gaming moments or how wonderful it is to field a navy on the tabletop instead of an army. Anything! Just get your ideas out there. Afterall, it couldn't hurt our beloved little corner of the 40k universe...
