My friend runs dark elves with a a ring of hotek on a black guard champion (with an ASF banner in the unit) in which he puts his general, an unstoppable killing machine (he alternates between executionner's axe or the regen/1+ AS/Khaeleth combo).
I wanted to know how to get rid of the champion in order to be able to cast properly...If I get in close combat, it means it's already too late to be doing magic (at a distance). Therefore I can't think of anything apart from champion-less units (ogres, trolls, minotaurs) that direct all the attacks they can just to rid themselves of the champion (because if I had characters in there I would probably be challenged by the Lord). But even then as previously mentioned, if I'm in CC then it's too late for my mages to be softening up the opposition.
Thanks to cheap units, I know it's possible to make the hating elves run in the wrong direction, but they could chop up anything I'd sent at them (hounds, 10-strong beast herds, 3 minotaurs, etc.) because of their ASF, two rerollable attacks and str 4 (what with the uber strong general that deals 5 attacks at a STR double of your toughness...). Oh and they're immune to psych, so tactical Slaanesh magic couldn't work either.
I know that elves are weak on the toughness and armor side, especially black guard, but we're not really that great with shooting to abuse that aspect.
I guess all that's left would be chariots with impact hits. Can we allocate impact hits from a chariot? 85 points (or more with marks) to get rid of a 50 points champion that messes up my casting phase is iffy for a trade-off.
Thanks for any pointers you might have!
sweet move putting that ring on the guard champion,
challenges wont be much fun with the lord executioner next to it. So instead you could use the same as he has.
+ A unit with a champion and a fighter general. If he challenges you you could accept the challenge with the weaker one leaving your hero to attack his 'ringbearer'... and hope your unit isnt wasted after that xD
+ chariots are nice here, they impact before the fighting starts, but you cannot direct the hits, it is like shooting.
Personally i would go without magic, and laugh in his face when he says he got antimagic rings
(more points to spend on big nasty looking beasts)
P.S. The only slaanesh spell that wont work on those bastards is the spasms spell
Warchief Diggah o da Bloodmoon Squiggahs
I hate that combo. It's a nigh-on untouchable unit.
One thing you could do, is avoid it. Concentrate on killing everything else and let it run around the field demanding to be engaged. I did that to a lizardman player once, ignored his temple guard the whole game. Hoo-wee, was he annoyed...
I have to agree that often the best thing to do against a unit like this is to avoid it. It's movement five, which is rough, but you have a quick army that can often get through terrain easily. Plus, the rest of his army has less points in it in order to afford the Black Guard block of doom. Hit his weaker spots and ignore the big block!
3 minotaurs are easily your best bet, throw them in and hope that you have one left to kill the champ, then magic the hell out of the unit, half points is better than no points and most of your stuff can flee so its all good.
No offense but the last thing I would do is listen to winger, chariots get axed and a character AND a unit champ are by no means worth it for just the hotek champ, unfortunately, beasts do not have a unit that can take that thing head on.
But if he does not center his army around the hotek ring you can magic things away from it, picking off units one by one. And if he does surround him, taking out shooting first, and then send minos on the suicide run. I mean that's the general idea, but being beasts you are still up against it most of the time .
2009 Tourny records (W-L-D) (20-4-4):
9/56, 1/12, 2/14, 4/14, 32/82, 1/6, 16/72
He does center the army around his hotek ring. Including both hydras and crossbowmen!
Do you go all out with magic? What lores do you use?
I play medium magic: two slaanesh shamen lvl 2. It helps me with the short range magic missile and the "you have to go there" spell.
You could do several things. It was said above, show up with no magic and dance around the uber unit. You could go all out with magic. Slannesh magic, which is my favorite, is great for Titillating Delusions (go there spell) or you can get an Enrapturing Spasms spell and a charge. On a whole I would just dance around him and not engage until I was ready to do so.
