Hi! I'm new to posting, but I've been on here reading with my High Elves since I started to play Warhammer last year. With the new Beastmen book out I figure it was time to retire my Elves and go for a more beasty (literally) army.
Anyway.. looking for some feedback/comments/thoughts on something I was thinking today while reading over the book:
5 minotaurs (Great weapons, Musician, Champ) joined by 1 Gorebull (so a 3x2 unit) and make him a BSB - no normal banner dude in the unit makes room for him in the front line as well, also forcing the enemy front line to divide attacks between 3 targets with dif stat lines.. same idea as a 3 champ front dwarf slayer unit, where you'd have 3 champs and then the unit to divide, this has a champ, the hero, and the unit.
Anyway.. give him the +1 str to him and his unit banner, so they now have str 6 (with gw.. so str 8..) the gorebull gives frenzy to the unit.. so you have 15 attacks in front (after frenzy you get 4 from the "unit" model, 5 from the champ model, and 6 from the gorebull (he has 5 base and I dont see anywhere that it states that it's part of his stat line already, and I have seen it stated elsewhere.. if this is wrong someone please correct me.. even still.. 14 attacks @ str 8 if I am wrong, still wow)
Since he is a BSB he cant have magic items.. but he can have gifts of chaos (since they are state as not magic items). So give the gorebull heavy armor, a gw, then the gift that gives him scale skin (so he has a total of 3+ armor save) and the one that makes a str 3 hit in cc before blows, so that'll be 4 models or so since he has a larger base!
so you have a crazy unit.. 14-15 attacks @ str 8.. and the benefits of a BSB! (and bloodgreed.. and fear)
Good idea/bad idea? It's pricey i know, (just over roughly 650, dont wanna give exact cuz I dont want to get in trouble if you're not allowed to give points lol) but.. man is this unit would be feared. You'd prob have to take both rare slots and bring like 2 Ghorgons or a Cygor and a Ghorgon just to draw fire cuz they may have a huge target on their head for the crazy awesomeness of it all!! =)
Thanks for any comments/thoughts in advance!
I don't think its a good idea to keep them in two ranks, running them as a unit of 3 joined by a gorebull would do the trick fine. I'm also not sure that +1 strength is overly effective with minotaurs but I do think a BSB gorebull is awesome. I have a potential set up that I am hoping to tryout in a game this week. A gorebull BSB with the the many limbed fiend gift and the Brass cleaver. In theroy can start with 10 S5 attacks with the starting frenzy.
1. Exchange your champion for a standard bearer. The 20pts for a +1A isn't justified for me, plus having a SB/BSB in the same unit gives it a +2 CRB.
2. Your Gorebull BSB can have magic items as long as it doesn't carry a magic standard. I'd give him the Manbane Standard, having all enemies within 6" take a -1 to their LD. Great, since your unit causes "fear".
3. As for weapon choices, it depends on what you want this unit to do. If it's job is hacking units/characters/monsters with a high toughness/armor save, I'd go for GWs. If not, take additional hand weapons.
4. Keep a unit(s) of chaos hounds or ungor near it, to absorb incoming fire.
I wouldn't worry too much about the whole 'Slayer Champion' tactic you're going for. Just work on getting the unit effective. If you've done your job, these guys don't get struck back
Now, as for your ideas...
I like the idea of 5 joined by a Doombull, but change the Champ for a Standard as suggested - otherwise you get no Look out Sir, and the banner is +1 CR automatically....
Run 4 wide. Think about the 2 guys in the back rank as 'bullet catchers'. Since Minos are 3 per box, I'd think about getting a unit of 6 joined by Gorebull and 4 wide. This gives 3 'bullet catchers' which means the enemy is looking at causing 15 wounds before your combat effectiveness drops...good odds for you, esp if you screen then with Hounds or Ungor Raiders.
Next, I would give your Minos 2x Hand Weapons, and the Gorebull a Great Weapon. This gives you the best of of both worlds. Giving the Minos Great Weapons means you're wasting points and attacks when against T3 infantry, which is the best way they pump themsleves up with Bloodgreed. However, you'll have the back up of the Gorebull just in case you need to crack armour, and Minos have great basic strength now, so 2x Hand Weapons are far from a bad choice. Look at how good Chaos Knights do without lances....
Lastly, play around with the Gorebull's setup. give the extra strength banner a go if you like. S6 minos with 5 attacks base would be nuts! And that Gorebull gets strength 8 for good measure. The good thing is his magic item setup can always be changed later if it doesn't work out, but the BSB will never be wasted.
Manhide banner isn't that good when it comes to fear(since they probably won't be within 6" at the time of the fear test). It will help with the actual breaktest though.
But I think a BSB over the top on a unit such as minotaurs. I am more likely to put mine with Razorgors.
Setup, the only banner worth it on a BSB is the Beast Banner(especially if you go AHW with your minos). Manhide Banner works better if there are Mengelder(the terror weapon). In the end, I think it is better to kit the BSB for killing power. Axes of Khorgor comes to mind. Another trick is the banner of Rust. The bull takes up a fair bit of space which means alot of models will suffer the -2 to their AS(and like before gets even better with AWHs).
If it worth sacrificing the option to kit the bull into the killing machine it is capable of becoming is debatable, or rather will reveal itself as we get to know the new book better.
""What's the matter? Don't ya like clowns? Don't we make ya laugh?" - Captain Spaulding.
Havnt played in ages, but can the gore bull take a magic standard?
If so Id give him the Totem of Rust and everyone else Great weapons. -6 to armour saves, i think so, gogo knight hunting,
Perhaps Razorgor fit better for Knight Hunting?
