After a grave disappointment with Ogres (the most boringest army I've ever played with) I'm thinking about a new WHFB army. So far I like Beastmen (love the concept and models are ok too judging by the pictures), Chaos Warriors (solely due to very nice models) and The Empire (looks like they have many options to choose from).
Models are probably the most important part for me, but playstyle matters too (sigh... Ogres...). Here's what I am looking for:
* Decent numbers but not not hordes. Somewhere in between the horde and the elite few. More than Ogres less than Rats
* Close Combat as a primary but not the only fighting style. OR if the close combat is basically the only option, I'd like to have ways to get close & personal as soon as turn 1 - 2. In other words I want to have something to do from the very beginning of the game, apart from marching forwards... marching... marching... *yawn*
* Options. Versatility. The more the better. Options in every sense, from the modeling & different competent army lists to the different available tactics on the battlefield. I'd take more options over the only-1-but-surefire-cheesy-list any day of the week.
* Detailed models interesting or even challenging to paint.
* Price. 40k Imperial Guardsmen I collect is extremely expensive :/ so at leat in FB I'd like to save on that if possible. Are the Beastmen very expensive?
Could you please tell me if Beastmen could live up to my expectations, or are there better non-elf armies for that? I am going to play a few proxy games anyway before deciding, but there's nothing like advice from experienced people. Don't wanna end up with boring and non competitive army like Ogres again. (Sorry Ogre lovers, no offense meant, just not my playstyle).

First off i would box up your ogres and wait for the rerelease before selling them off, just so you get more money for them hopefully.
But anyway, despite beastmen being a farily recent release, they didnt get the cheese that many other amries have had when recently rereleased. As such there are no real must take items like in Dark Elves where you would always find Pendant of Kelith, but in my opinion it makes BM all that much better. Minotaurs are also alot better despite loosing marks, and you have a number of new big monsters to choose from.
Beastmen are not a monster army tho and still need a number of big blocks of gore and ungor to be competative. This may put you off as although they are not the 40 strong horde units, you can expect to be fielding several units 25-30 strong. Unless you intend to find a cheap alternative or can find the models cheap online you will find yourself paying £15 for 10 models. Now if you have 3 units 30 strong (gor or ungor, or the eqivalent number of models) your looking £135 just on your core units. This initialy put me off beastmen but i luckily had some core put aside from the previous edition. You may want to look at converting your own bestigor aswell as these models are even more expensive.
You can make back a bit of ground on your army though with the speacial and rare choices as you have the option to take up a large number of points on very few models, with minotaurs 40ish-50ish points each and giants and jabberslythes close to 300, what you spend on core can be balanced out with your elite troops. (Didnt realy work for me as i wanted a massive herd army rather than a monster army).
Generals and heroes got better aswell witht the upgrades they got. iv seen a doombull lord and hero take out an army before and have had my dwarfs taken apart by just a beastlord and gorgon. The ambush rule is nasty still also. Although it is more random than before theres still a 75% chance that you will be able to turn what ever side you appear from to your advantage. You also get scouting...yes scouting harpies. you can expect by turn 2 to be doing somthing, and then you have the movement spell to move your troops up even faster.
All in all i dont think you will be dissapointed with beastmen, may just have to be careful in how and what you choose to buy.
Thank you for detailed reply!
Last night I have played two test games with proxied beastmen.
First one was 1.5k against Orks & Goblins. I took Animal lore and rolled 1st & 2nd spells. Means +1T / + 1S and some kind of missile S2. I completely annihilated the poor greenskins without losing a single unit of my own (lost some models tho). Well, the guy was not much more experienced than I am, and his list didn't seem all that competitive. But I couldn't win that one with ogres, leave alone massacre.
The next one was sort of a team game. I teamed up with the very same Orks&Goblins for 1250+1250 against 2500 of Tomb Kings. I took Wild lore and got the spells Bestial Surge & Mantle of Ghorok. The former was absolutely awesome and the latter...so-so. I guess I misused it. Anyway, we deployed along the back edges (skull pass) and got massacred by his rather shooty army :/ And yet I was under impression that I could win 2.5k Beasts vs TK, I mean his army list is strong but not something unbeatable. And, most important, I can see what I have done wrong and what could have been improved, both in army list and playing tactics. This is something I've virtually never experienced in FB before
All in all, I am quite happy with the Beastmen so far. I hope the novelty won't wear off soon Next weekend I'm going to play 2.5 proxy beasts vs Tomb Kings. Gonna try and make a new list and post it later for your criticism and suggestions.
I find list building with beastmen relatively more difficult because you really have to pay attention to the synergies you can achieve. You pay dearly for any mistakes, but it's very educational (and fun) at the same time.
Be nice to your enemies, it will make them madder!
I've posted 2.5k list in army lists subforum yesterday, but all I got was the message that my thread will appear only after admins confirm it :/ Is this a new practice?
First ive heared of it happening. you sure you posted it in the rite place?
Ye. Reposted now since it didn't show up so far.
