I am huge fan of Minotaurs, and while Warriors of Chaos army has a lot of interesting units (trolls, ogres, dragon ogres...) I am still missing Minotaurs...
So, I want to create small Beastmen list to use as second detachment, up to 1000 points, with maximum number of minotaurs. I am playing mostly against T3-4 armies, so AHW for minotaurs will great, and we are playing without magic at all, so I am not afraid of being swallowed by some magic buble. But I am not sure what to do with Core...
Chariots - they could be useful, as Warriors do not have a lot of them, and everyone says chariots are awesome against HElves. But on 1000 points I have to use 5 of them, too much? Or take 3-4 chariots and something else too?
Centigors are quite interesting, taking Ghorros will put them into Core, but their price is 1.75 times of Marauder Horsemen, are they really worth it?
Gors. S3, really? Yea, ok, they are cheap, but not THAT cheap! And they may not take GW. I suppose Marauders will do the same job for half price, but still - need opinion of experienced beasts.
Ungors. I hate the models, I hate the idea, and of course I hate the price, naked ungor costs the same as Marauder+GW! It would be the very last choice only if you'll say that everything above will not work.
So, what do you say? May be I missed something obvious and cool at the same time? May be second detachment not worth it and I should just get some Minotaurs on the shelf and stay calm?
Gors can be dangerous in large groups, thanks to Primal Fury and Horde formation. I like a couple of big blocks of Gors, with some Ungor Raiders for screening and general annoyance, and a Chariot or two for spice.
I don't run Minos myself, but if you want to go heavy on the Minotaurs you need to keep the core to bare minimum. Thus AHW Gors. As many as you need to fill up the minimum Core requirements.
Revenant Moon Necrons: (W/L/D) 0/1/0 (6th edition: 13/2/2)(5th edition: 14/6/4)(3rd edition Codex: 16/4/7)
XIX Legion: (W/L/D) 0/0/0 (5th edition: 14/12/2)(5th edition Codex: 4/3/0)
Black Legion: (W/L/D) 1/0/0 (6th edition: 2/3/0)
Something Wicked... Reikwald Beastmen: (W/L/D) 10/4/1
After the BSB takes beast banner and joins the gors, my 60 gor unit gets s4 at just over a point per model. With kazraks ambush re-rolls, this unit is nasty and fairly cheap.
So in this bunker I have Kazrak, wargor bsb and great bray with crown of horns. So they potentially come in behind you on turn one, have stubborn, with rerollable Ld 9. And they are all str4. Noone likes this. Then again they dont like the minotaurs with gorebull either
But I usually play big point games.
Sorry for the 2 posts but my phone browser never lets me edit on this site.
Whooaaa... Stop the presses... Just reread the book and I cheated my last opponent pretty hard. I guess I never noticed that characters cant deploy by ambush so I guess ambushing with Kazraks super-gors was illegal. I guess I have to do the ambushing with the other big gor horde.
Oh well.. He had a silly list and would have lost anyway. He probably wouldnt have been embarrassed though. I will have to apologize next time I see him.
Kazraks big gor horde would still be potent even with normal deployment though.
But again, big point games make this possible. With 60 gors, paying 75 to get str4 is a good deal. In smaller units, it may not be.
Ok, planned three different options for minimal core on 2000 game, need your feedback and heavy critics on that, considering that full Special will be filled with Minotaurs (I wish there was a book "Armybook Chaos Minotaurs" with Mark of Khorne option!)
- 10 Centigors, FC, Ghorros
- 10 Ungor raiders
will be exactly 500 pts for about 100 pounds.
6 Chariots + 10 Ungor raiders (or 5 Chariots + 17 Ungor raiders)
about 540 points for about 125 pounds
60 Gors, FC AHW, will take a tiny bit more than 500 points for about 95 pounds, but will additionally need BSB with Beast Banner, taking points from Heroes and taking BSB from Minotaurs... Not sure if Gors are viable option without S4 banner, or if I am targeting full Mino army should I just make them dead meat separating in 3 smaller groups for screening?...
To be honest with you, neither of those 3 options on its own is particularly appealing. You're not playing with magic, which severely limits what Gors can accomplish (even in giant Hordes), 6 Chariots is too slow and offers little to no redirecting power, and Centigors combined with Minotaurs means your army is made out of glass. I'd strike a compromise between 2 and 3 - you want Chariots to help your Minotaurs chase things down, but you also want Gors to help break ranks. Also consider Ungor Raiders to help screen for the Minotaurs - Frenzy is something that must be actively monitored.

I would go for the gor option. I use 2 units of 60 gors each in my list. Well 57 and 60 actually. One gets the beast banner and stubborn crown from the other character, the other gets the other stubborn crown. So both are stubborn and one is str4. Gors have always been great for me. But then I only run 4 minotaurs and a gorebull. Only 5 of them but they are still nasty at this size and the only thing nastier than a gorebull is a doombull... but I need me Lord points elsewhere.
Hm, I see, sounds fair.
Also, if you were doing Minotaurs maximum, would you put BSB onto Gorebull or with Gors?
