Cain's cowardice is still a bog plus though, who doesn't love the idea of the man who tries to constantly run away from things always landing himself deeper and deeper in the doo doo.

Group A
A fairly bland group, but a good one for omens for the host nation. England had an identical group as hosts in 1966 (and we all know how THAT turned out!). I favour France to gou out, with the SA and Uruguayans to go through.

Group B
Argentina are the favouurites in this group but it isn't a strong one. However, I could see any of the 4 teams doing well.

Group C
Enough's been said about this group. England plus one. USA get my vote. Could shock England 1-1 in the first game.

Group D
Germany and Australia in this one. Ghana and Serbia probably won't be strong enough.

Group E
Again, this is a group with one clear favourite (The Netherlands) and 3 countries the potentially could qualify, possibly apart from Japan. Even they can't be written off though.

Group F
Italy and Paraguay. One of the easier groups to predict.

Group G
Any 2 besides N. Korea. Pity them as they return to the WC,they sure ai'nt gonna get any mercy in this group. However, a good result for them could be the make or break for one team in this group as the other three look to cancel each other out.

Group H
Spain have an easy group, much the same as England. Chile are my bet to go through with them.

Recently I've been thinking a lot about how a brand adds value to a product. As a shop worker this is very prominently at the forefront of my line of work as celebrity endorsement are plastered all over various Christmas gifts in a bid to boost sales of an otherwise fairly mediocre product. It often puts me off getting something but then I realise the hypocrisy of this with my choice of hobbies.

As an avid GW collector and Magic: the gathering player I am used to having to pay somewhat over the odds for a product. A Magic booster currently costs £3.49 in my local store. A good card can fetch £5-10 online. Some, like this one, can go for thousands! However every once in a while you read something that makes you realise quite what a markup these cards have:

Six years later, I found myself hanging around a game designer and watching him create playtest cards out of foil rares. The rares were from a non-Magic card game that nonetheless had an active secondary market. My eyes were like saucers as he scribbled on gleaming card faces with a black Sharpie. "But that's a foil [insert valuable rare here]!" I said, incredulous, as if he was spray-painting an anarchy sign on a war memorial.
"You know they're all worthless, right?" he said.
He wasn't saying that cards are not worth owning, or games not worth playing. He was only trying to tell me that these cards cost fractions of a cent to print, and that I was working for a card company.

I find this a brilliant anecdote, one that helps keep you grounded and remember that it really is only a game. It's something I'lll turn to when I think about splashing excessive amounts of money on a single "perfect card" for my collection.

So why do I want to splash money on these products? I think a part of it is the excitement. When I buy a pack of cards most of my excitement comes from the anticipation of getting some cool new cards, stumbling across a new combo or finding that elusive card that was way overpriced online.

Warhammer has a similar attraction. It has a way of enticing you in to buy exciting figures in dramatic poses in a different way to Magic, you know what you're buying with warhammer for a start, but it still manages to create a thrill for me when I know I'm getting my hands on a fun new kit. Yes I pay more for these things than they're really worth, amd in my heart of hearts I know that, but it's the thrill and excitement and ujoy of the whole experience that makes me want to do it again and again.

So I've been reading a few of the Black Library books recently, the quality of them leaves me a little puzzled. Now I know that the worlds of Warhammer and 40k are very much defined realities that the writers have to stick to, but I get the feeling that with some of the books it's very much a case of "we need a book on this by March, can you do it?"

Now, don't get me wrong, I read the Ciaphas Cain books not long ago and am currently reading the Eisenhorn trilogy and both of those are proving to be excellent reads, especially being a guard player. It makes me want to use different things in my armies to replicate their individual personae, which is good, it's how a book should be. I love the way the Cain books are presented not just as his account but as a collaborated work of the events surrounding his life and actions.

Some of the other books I do have an issue with though. I read the Malus Darkblade books and wasn't a fan (of the first 3 anyway, I didn't bother buying the last 2). The Blood Bowl series started off well but by the time it got to the fourth book I was underwhelmed. It all seemed to staged. The author was running out of ideas. Knight's errant was awful. I haven't even bothered to look at the second one that's come out.

I keep hearing about the horus heresy books and how great they are. While I would quite like to see for myself how good a read they are, a part of me thinks that it would just be a long series that never really finishes and starts running out of ideas again.
Plus there's the fact that the rate their churning the books out at makes me speculate at the quality too.

I suppose I'll just have to lump it really. I might go and see if I can get some of the Horus Heresy books from the library but as for now it seems that I'll be sticking with Gregor and Ciaphas.

On Friday I did something that I've been wanting to do for a while, held a large, 5 player Magic game. Myself and 4 friends played a variant of "star", instead of using a deck made of the 5 magic colours we each used a deck consisting of the 3 colours from each of the 5 shards of alara sets.

I took grixis with a completely un-grixis deck, a milling deck consisting of blue black and red cards, the red was splashed to give a little late game finishing power if needed. The jund player (Matt) had a more typical jund deck with plenty of devour cards with some grixis "unearth" cards thrown in to eat, recycle and eat again.

Naya was taken by Kirsten, using a red, green, white deck with lots of big creatures and mana ramping. This worried me as she needed me dead to win and I had little defence against her fatties! Ed was next round the table with a Bant deck that was defensively focussed on the "exalted" mechanic, as all good Bant decks are. Finally, Danni, seated to my right, had an Esper artifact deck with a LOT of big, fat sphinxes.

The winning condition for each player was that the 2 player opposite you (ie. not sitting next to you) had to be dead. This could be achieved even if you are dead yourself, which made for an interesting situation come the end of the game.

Kirsten went first overall and, with her and Ed as my enemies, my first few "mills" surprisingly went at Matt, seeing as he was more able to use the grixis cards in his graveyard to to draw early blood against Ed. Once his graveyard was suitably stocked, he instead started trading blows with Danni, who at this point had a reasonable defence but little in the way of an attack, a few "chippers" but not a lot else. It was a move she played early in the mid-game that saw off Ed though.

Ed had so far managed to do very little in the early game due to being a little mana screwed with only 4 lands out. A quick tap/sacrifice of an Esper panorama later and I was able to archive trap him for free, foring the top 13 cards of his library into his graveyard. Having already used Hedron crab's ability in my previous turn and then again in the turn following (when I finally got a swamp out) I had got rid of 12 of the land in his deck in the space of 19 cards. It was at this point I played my first mind funeral on him, having a second in my hand and knowing that he was unlikely to have 8 more lands in the deck. When it got round to my turn again it transpired that he didn't.

Matt was the next to go, with Danni repeatedly swinging in the air with a tidehollow strix and Matt unable to do anything to the 2 power flyer to get rid of it thanks to the 2 metallurgeons she had in play. art this point Ed starts to encourager Kirsten a lot to go for me as her next target due to my lack of defences, which she duly does. It's only when I point out at 8 life that if she keeps attacking me that Ed will, in fact, win, that she realises that both myself and Danni must be taken out simultaneously in order for her to win. I, on the other hand, am struggling. Struggling, that is, until I get a Platinum angel into play. The game is now at a stalemate as Danni is reluctant to attack Kirsten due to her being unable to win, I can do little due to being on minus 27 life and having a lot of my good cards ripped out of my deck by a haunting echoes that had been hive mind-ed (my own fault there!) and Kirsten seems unable to win too.

Finally, as half eleven nears and people start to get tired, a compromise is reached between Danni and I, she is able to do the final point of damage to Kirsten with a thopter token as I block her attacking, deathtouching strix with my angel. I die, Kirsten dies, Danni is the only player left alive and Danni, Ed and myself finally win the game after 3 long hours of Magic.

It was worth it though!

Hopefully by the end of December I'll have the majority of my infantry done, with the eye to doing the heavy weapons in the new year. Then it's pretty much tanks all the way (barring my steel legion, Harker vets and a commissar or 2. Oh, and the stormtroopers. And do roug riders count?)
Anyway, to sign off, I'm trying to come up with ideas for a vendetta base at the moment, if anyone has any ideas gimme a shout!

Right, that's that bit out of the way, now to talk about Magic!

Recently I've got more and more into magic: the gathering. I've got quite a lot of cards now, from various sets, and am starting to look into playing more and more different formats. The thing that's really starting to put me off though is the price. I'm looking at making a whole load of wacky, fun decks but it just seems that there's always a card that does the job so much better except it costs a whole load more. There seems to be a pressure to play all the good cards too and I can't seem to compete with power gaming decks. Sometimes I just want a deck for fun!
