After reading through some of my old white dwarfs and hearing about an up-coming 1000pt tournament that will be running at our local gaming group, I decided to collect another army; actually, more precisely another 2 or 3 armies.
So, having been inspired by the good old 'tale of 4 gamers' I have decided to do a similar thing. I am going to document the processes of collecting another army - from start to finish. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I plan to.
The only problem I have come across is the fact that I am building 3 different armies at once - so, in due course, I will atempt to document all 3.
For interested parties, the armies that I am collecting this time around are Imperial Guard, Eldar (Biel Tan) and Imperial Fist Space Marines.
I'll get the first article up over the weekend sometime (or failing that on Monday).
Cheers,
Exarch Thomo

Moving on to the mainstay of any army, troops! My next purchase, and one that I am still putting together, was the Battleforce boxed set. I was somewhat surprised at the reasonably good value that I got out of this box – I am actually going to use everything in it (unlike some other Battle force boxes I have previously bought).
Now, being the generally lazy person I am, I first assembled the 5-man combat squad. On a side note, I am one of those players who thinks everything counts in large amounts, subsequently I like to field full sized squads if the points allow (or I want to try a mechanised theme with a few Razorbacks). In the glory days of 3rd Ed it was not uncommon for my regular Tyranid opponent to outnumber me by a mere 10 models, if he did actually manage to outnumber me at all. I generally believe in quality over quantity, but you can’t beat a quantity of quality…
Back on track, I assembled the 5 marines and made them part of my other, pre-existing, 5 man squad to form a full 10-man squad. Complete with plasma gun and plasma cannon – for all that high strength explosive goodness that is almost as dangerous to me as to the enemy.
After painting these guys appropriately, I turned my attentions to my Dark Angels Rhino. Using copious amounts of Iyanden Darksun I managed to cover all the green bits and began converting it to match my new army. After a couple of hours of painting, inking and detailing I had my first real unit – a nice, shiny Tactical Squad with a Rhino Transport. As always I attempt to theme my forces – in this case I aiming for a part of, if not the whole, 5th Company. I have always preferred the black trims of these ‘bumble-bee’ Fists over the red. However, I did succumb to a spot of colour and have decided to put a red stripe on the helmet of my sergeants. Veterans will get a different helmet yet again – red helmet with a white stripe down the centre. Keen readers will recognise this as the pre-heresy colours.
So, with the full Tactical Squad completed I continued with the next troop choice. As previously stated I am generally lazy. Therefore when it came to a choice between 5 scouts or 10 marines, it was bit of a non-contest. I assembled the scouts. Now, even though I have been playing for 10 years I haven’t used scouts that much – sure I had a few with sniper rifles, but they didn’t see much ground time. I was a little unsure as to what to arm them with but in the end decided that more bolters can only be a good thing – so my unit is now armed with 4 bolters and a Heavy Bolter.
After painting these scouts – I went for brown fatigues and the standard yellow armour – I sat back to admire my handiwork. In front of me was assembled the core of what could prove to be quite a good army (I hope).
I had all the basics covered – HQ, 2 Troops and even an Elites choice. Now it’s time to splash out with some more interesting choices – Assault Marines, Heavy Support choices (can’t wait to get my hands on the whirlwind suppression box), Terminators…
