The Straken Awakes

Building a Death Strike Missile Launcher

Rate this Entry
It will probably be a while before GW bring out a kit so here's an idea on how to build one.

Parts: Chimera base vehicle
Bits and bobs
1:35 SS-1c 'SCUD B' w/MAZ-543 TEL kit.
(Not a cheap option but lots of interesting stuff left for the bits box!)

1. The launcher unit support legs and frame are a nice size for the back of a chimera so it can be assembled as per instructions.

2 The missile carrier is tooo long and a staggered cut and splice on the side arms keeps the strength.

3 The missile is MASSIVE so I cut about 1.5 cm of it.

Best thing is that it all moves - legs, deflector, carrier and the missile can come off.

4 The Chimera body needed to be as low as possible to allow the carrier to near horizontal in the driving mode. I cut the top and reversed it so it sat inside the compartment about 6mm below the crew compartment.

A piece was cut out (approx 15x20 mm wide) at the back to allow for the carrier ram.

A second top, left over from a basilisk kit was chopped and mounted over the tracks at the back.

A couple of bits of sprue were used to make the carrier support beams.

5 An old engine from a plastic toy car was stuck in the hatch and some woven string was used to make the flexible exhausts. Tops from some very cheap superglue tubes made the side facing exhaust vents and a couple of plastic beads and some arials made the guidance system.

6 All that was left was a radar unit - a strip about 12mm wide cut from a small figure base and bent slightly, a bit of sprue and a tank roller cut in half.

7 A few Imperial Guard eagles on the carrier arms and finished.

8 All that's left is the paint job...

Armies fight battles, Tanks win battles, Artillery wins wars but Deathstrike scares the .... out of everyone.

Have fun

Very nice conversion job and I have to compliment the table on which your final model is pictured on - very impressive.

However, I'm not entirely convinced on your camo colour scheme ;-)

I know it's not a usual camo colour scheme but hey I like blues.
(Even my Nid army is in mainly blue..)

Love making scenery and used to play a lot of Nec so I have tons of detailed stuff 'cos its all up close and personal with the gangs.
Used to get up at 3, 4 o;clock in the morning. Nip down to the shed and work 'til dawn just because I thought of some unusual piece in the bit boxes that could be turned into something, Even made a crashed Shuttle Lander out of an old battery hoover with props (out of computer fans) that work, and flashing lights in the engine room, landing lights and laser cannon. Sounds great when you turn the hoover on!

    Thanks for the comments.
Just made up an acrylic template for the blast Radius 3" + D3 ie 8', 10" or 12". It's one hell of an impact at Str 10 AP1 with no centre of blast - so no cover saves and full impact (+1) on any vehicles it touches!
Testing it tomorrow in a 1500pt game with a Manicore, Griffin and a Psychic Choir (8 psykers and overseer). Should be interesting...just hope it fires (and doesn't go off course).
