My brother is going to play brettonians as his first warhammer army so i will post it here, i want his list to be fairly balanced not over the top i know you cant do a lot with 500 pts but i want it him to be able to fight most armies not just mine ogre kingdoms (it shouldnt matter a lot what he fields against me anyway according to most bret stuff ive read).
Were not using border patrol or warband rules so heres his list
battle standard bearer
4 knight errant
6 Knights of the realm
10 peasent bowmen
Well, if your going to play at that small a points level, I would consider using the Border Patrol Rules, as that is what they were designed for. Having to take 2 Heroes at 500 points is really quite a handicap as it limits our already expensive troop choices.
But off the top of my head, for a standard army list at 500 points, here we go.
(General) Paladin - 80 points
-Lance, Shield, Barded Bretonnian Warhorse
(BS Paladin - 74 points
-Barded Bretonnian Warhorse
(5x) Knights of the Realm (General joins) - 144 points
(5x) Knight Errant (BSB joins)- 141 points
-Full Command, Erranty Banner
(10x) Peasant Bowmen - 70 points
Total Points: 499
Thats about the best list I can think of off the top of my head. Also the list isn't really going to be that fun to play, as all you will be doing is charging. You don't have different units or a fair amount of Peasants to add variety to your list. I would really suggest starting off at either 750 or preferable 1000 for Bretonnnia if you can.

it's quite good, but i'd rather use 2 units of 5 knights each with a character. here's the bret list i use at 500 points, very close to yours, but with a banner of châlons because i can't stand stand&shoot, and i had the points to spare . it's worked really well against all sorts of armies
banner of châlons
5 knights of the realm (+general)
5 knight errant (+bsb)
and just in case your brother's feeling like using a lot of peasants already, here's my 500 pts peasant list
virtue of empathy
5 knights of the realm (+general)
24 men-at-arms (+bsb)
total = 499
Although it is a handicap since hell be playing my ogres the 2 hqs wont be too much of a difference as my ogre general is over 130pts on its own the reason i want him to start with a balanced list instead of tailoring it against ogres is if we play against other armies with more men he might still use tailored lists which will be ineffective.Having to take 2 Heroes at 500 points is really quite a handicap as it limits our already expensive troop choices.
Spector is the reason the knights of the realm are allowed in a group of only 4 because of being the general? Because from using army builder (my brothers got codex not me) does not allow less than 5 knights of the realm including gallant and if the minimum squad is 5 the list would be 524 pts
My brother i assume likes knights most so i would think he'd prefer arisen devils 1st list.were starting at 500pts so we can get used to the rules really neither of us has played warhammer fantasy battle before this. It also helps us both get to the core of our armies generally i know brettonia are not just knights but the majority are, it also disuades us from using to many points on heroes since we cantwith this points limit It is also more money to start at higher points (I know this is warhammer and its fairly expensive anyway) were going to be basically doing slow escalation between ourselves fighting every 250 pts or so to get used to our armies. Also the list isn't really going to be that fun to play, as all you will be doing is charging. You don't have different units or a fair amount of Peasants to add variety to your list. I would really suggest starting off at either 750 or preferable 1000 for Bretonnnia if you can.
Thank you all for the quick responses
Unless there is something ive missed too (quite likely tbh...) then i dont think you can have units of 4 Knights. I would say though, if not using the Brder Patrol rules, then the best you can do at low points is something like Spector's list, or Arsen Devils 1st suggestion.
Basic General and BSB, 5 Realm with FC, 5 Errant with FC, and 10 pesant bowmen skirmishing.
Yea don't mind me and my nonsensical rambling...I was thinking about another list when I wrote this one and for some reason the Grail Knight unit size got in my head...sorry for the confusion . Anyways yea something like what people have been saying, 2 naked paladins, 5 man KotR, 5 man KE and 10 man skirmishing PB is the way to go. Its a fairly solid list.
