Im new to WHFB, have played 40K and Mordheim. I am putting together some Bretonnians and would like some advice vs Chaos and Orc players. My first battle is against Chaos and I have no idea what he will bring but our first game is limited to 550 points with all required heroes being waived(you can still take them but not required)
I have put the following list together
1 x Paladin w/ Lance, Shield, Warhorse - 80pts
4 x Grail Knights w/ FC - 182pts (plan to join the paladin to this unit) -
5 x KotR w/ FC - 144pts
5 x KotR w/ FC - 144pts
Total - 550pts
So any tips on my army list or what I should look out for against Chaos(primarily) and then orcs would be greatly appreciated.
If the Paladin is going to join the Grail Knights he needs to have Grail Vow which makes him 101 pts instead of 80...
--Punted to Army lists--
in a 550pt game, your Grail Knights are simply too expensive.
Your knights in general are not likely to hit hard enough to negate the static Combat Resolution that will be generated by large units (i.e. Orcs, Goblins, Maruaders). Right now, your knights have no ranks and will probably be outnumbered often, putting them at an automatic 2-4 point CR deficit. Your charges can be thunderous, but a few instances of rubber-lance syndrome will see this army defeated.
I'd consider investing in some peasants to protect the flanks of your knights, and to bolster your numbers. Don't underestimate peasant bowmen and men at arms.
Thanks for the advice, having looked through the Chaos army list I was particularly worried about fighting them. Unfortunately I played on the 6th and didn't get a chance to read your posts. I did change my list because I noticed the missing grail vow and ended up with 3 groups of 5 KotR and 1 group of 5 Grail Knights.
The person I played against was an experienced chaos player and trapped my Grail Knights by fleeing the unit I charged to have my unit counter charged by Chosen knights and Chariot, my inexperience showing.
I failed my charge vs the Chariot.
Successfully charged some beast men but suffered from the above described rubber lances killing only 1
Successfully counter charged his Chosen knights in the flank but again suffered from rubber lances and fleeing.
Experience can be the best teacher and I don't think I will ever play without full command again. I was told that to have a Rank bonus you need at least 5 models in the second rank so does that mean Knights in the Lance formation never get rank?
